BENDIGO BOMBERS
Coach: Adrian Hickmott (second year).
Captain: Michael Flaherty.
Last season: 5 wins, 15 losses.
In: Charles Slattery (Central Districts), Paul Scanlon (Seymour), Ky Miller (NTFL), Joel Malone (Maryborough), Jerome Jetta (Brookton, WA), Simon Weekley (Sandhurst).
Out: Brent Hartigan, Shannon Geary, Dale Young, Johnny Coghlan.
Verdict: On and off the field, it’s a vital year for the Bombers. The club needed an injection of cash from the VFL and Essendon to get through last season, and, with the alignment up for review at the end of 2009, Bendigo must show it is a viable state league entity. Essendon injuries exposed the VFL list as being tissue-thin last year and a 2007 finalist slumped to 13th. But the establishment of three training bases and the appointment of a full-time football manager in Steve Thomson opened recruiting doors, and the Bombers have gained some experienced types and some exciting tykes. Expect them to improve, but perhaps not enough to enter the top eight.

C Miller Scanlon Hooker
HF Williams German Still

Shapes to be a good game with fairly strong sides from both teams.

Is there a chance that some of our rookies will play for the reserves (Bock, Carrol etc.) or are they pretty safe for a senior game?

Bolded are Essendon AFL players.

My 2 cents. Exciting game ball going from end to end but the skill level was pretty frustrating at times.

Atkinson. My BOG for us. I dont know what the record is for most bounces in a match but he must of been close to it today.

NLM. Had a huge first half maybe faded a bit towards the end but was hard at it all day. One of our top 3.

Houli. Overused the handball way too much early on. 2nd and 3rd qtrs was much better. Played mainly back flank. Had a heap of the ball.

Neagle. Couldnt buy a kick but that said the delivery was crap. Moved to CHF and still struggled. Looked to get KO'd in the last but stayed out there. Not many touches and the goal was our first of the day kicked off the ground. Gotta work harder.

Williams. Playing just as a forward now which suits his game a lot more. 3 goals but probably only had 4 or 5 kicks. Did his job i guess.

Magin. Came into it in the second half kicked 2 smart goals and got some handy touches late in the game.

Hooker. Key defence all day and was pretty good. Created a lot of run and did some nice spoils. I like him.

T. Slattery. Creates run has great evasive skills. Knows when to run off and when to spoil. Last qtr wasnt great for him but the match-up was asking a bit too much.

Bellchambers. Rucked well but let his man run off too much.

Bock. Crowd favourite. Does stuff you dont expect a 200+cm kid to do. Well drilled when in the ruck, fills holes and helps out in defence. Just cant kick.

Still. Young i know but a bit short to be a key forward. Works very hard to create space. More like a Ryan O'Keefe than a key position player.

German had a good second half, in and under type.

Carroll. Has some quality about him. Played as a leading forward at stages and looked dangerous.

Klemke. Was ok but you can why he slipped so far. Nothing really stands out about him.

Scanlon is a quality pick up. Kye Miller is a freak.

He's 194cm (6cm taller then O'keefe) and still (Pardon the pun) growing. With a player of his size and mobility, I'd be rapt if he turned out to be 1/2 the player O'Keefe is.

Thanks for the report. Good job. :thumbsu:

Henry's brother Charlie is playing for Bendigo as well.

Am I the only one who's loving this running defence coming from our key defenders? Pears and Daniher have done it beautifully and now Hooker's getting involved.

Agree with Lemon Chickons summary.

Atkinson probably would have made the best if he did not butcher a few of his kicks. Was very good to see him taking the game on with the run and bounce. Something he did not do last week.

I thought Houli went missing for a while during the second quarter. His run and carry for a 10 minute period during the third quarter helped get bendigo back into the game.

Klemke was really good early but after Hickmott got him to tag Scottland his productivity slowed noticably.

Neagle. Ordianry. FFS play in front and stop trying to take speccies over you opponent becasue you look stupid when you can't jump of the ground.
Should be trying to play like Dunstall and not Jeza !
He suffered from not having a lot of inside 50's in the first half but his efforts to get in front where pathetic. Was behind the whole game and when he was in front he somehow managed to end up behind when the ball came in.
He made a VFL quality player look like an AFL star.

Magin was 100% better than he has been in recent weeks.

Good to see the old Bendigo sytem of best players is still in use.
3 spots for the best 3 , one spot for a Bendigo player and two pump the tyres up for the young blokes.

Cale Hooker did well for Bendigo

The Bendigo Bombers lost their opening match of the season this afternoon, going down to the Northern Bullants by nine points. The Bombers were outclassed early but produced a much improved performance in the second half and were clinging to a two-point lead at the final change.

Late in the final quarter Bendigo still looked like hanging on but two goals in 30 seconds to the Bullants just before the final siren sealed their fate. The Bombers went down 12.8 (80) to 13.11 (89).

Cale Hooker was the best performed Essendon-listed player, doing an excellent job at centre half back. He marked strongly, used the ball well and already looks a much improved player with a full season now under his belt.

Bachar Houli sparked the Bombers in the third quarter, racking up countless possessions in the midfield and bringing his fellow midfielders into the game. Nathan Lovett-Murray and Jarrod Atkinson were other solid contributors as was rookie Bryce Carroll and first-year player Tyson Slattery.

The Bombers have John Williams on report after he made late contact with a Northern Bullants player in a marking contest. There were no significant injuries from the game although Jay Neagle was left dazed after a heavy headclash midway through the final quarter.

Goal kickers: John Williams (3), Simon Weekley (3), Rhys Magin (2), Jay Neagle, Paul Scanlon, Nathan Lovett-Murray and Tom Bellchambers (1).

Best players: James Flaherty, Cale Hooker, Paul Scanlon, Stewart Crameri, Tyson Slattery and Bryce Carroll.

Bendigo Bombers in new Clash jumper on Saturday against Werribee

All of our supporters will be aware that the club’s ‘clash’ jumper, in which white was the predominant colour, has differed markedly from the red and black combination worn by our players for home games.

Our new clash jumper has been completely redesigned and will feature red, grey and gold to reflect the Bank’s corporate colours, whilst retaining red and black as an integral part of the whole combination.

"It is yet another iniatiative by our Club to link together the things that identify us as a Club - our community and great corporate partnerships", Chairman David Joss said today.

The new clash design features a stylised red sash on the front in similar fashion to the home jumper, but grey replaces the black background and the red is interspersed with gold stripes. In addition, the grey background on the front and back also contains a representation of the traditional Bendigo ‘poppet head’ logo with which many people will be familiar.

The players’ numbers will be in black and the emblems of the Bank, the Bendigo Bombers and the VFL will appear on the front. The Bank’s logo will also be shown on the back, together with that of our Major Corporate Sponsor, Poyser Motors Isuzu.

Phil Whiting from the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank said that “the new jumper is a very visible display of the partnership between the Bank and the Bendigo Bombers and our joint commitment to our local community. It’s an exciting design that we believe favorably extends our brand through, our partnership with the Bombers, across the state.”
Bendigo Bombers Chairman David Joss also said that “the new clash design looks fantastic and is a radical departure from previous seasons. We are pleased we have been able to create a jumper that connects us strongly with Our Town Bendigo and our major sponsor the Bendigo Bank.

The new clash design is pictured below and will be worn for the first time this Saturday against the Werribee Tigers.

fingers crossed myers starts midfield and dominates.

Might be a bit of a long haul for Myers. The virus he had on and off for 4 weeks during Feb has really slowed him down.
He may be nursed along a bit over the next month or so.

To the guys that go along to Bendigo games, do you think Atkinson might be able to step up eventually into our 1's permanently, to take over the BP from Slattery? From what I've seen from him in the NAB the last couple of years, he would be a mighty improvement with run and dash. If his defense is up to par of course...:)

BIG Fan of this concept. I am sure it'll happen by mid year!
