I reminded myself just now to make this thread. Who do you think is the best Coach?

I think it's Paul Roos, absolutely no contest.

Got to be Roos.
Doesn't have the swanies playing the most exciting brand of footy (no offense Roosey), but just plays it smart. The master of looking at the big picture and achieving long-term goals.

It's a coin toss between Mark Thompson and Roosy. Obvious bias aside, I had to go with Roosy, because of what he has achieved with our list.

Dean Laidley has got the most out of a poor list. Every year, the Melbourne media tip the Roos to be on the slide and every year Laidley gets them into the finals.

The best coach is the one that gets the most out of the list that he has. And that man is Dean Laidley.

Laidley in my opinion is one of the worst. He drops players like Harris and Jones because he's on bad terms with them and in 2006, he wouldn't drop Jonothan Hay no matter how terrible he performed.

If you go by records then you might as well call Neil Craig the best coach ever. In my opinion, Mark Thompson is a solid coach, but he isn't a genius. Paul Roos though, he took a team of rejects from other clubs into a couple of premierships and won one of them and he like never misses the finals.

Bomber is the best off field coach as far as putting together a list from scratch and turning them into premiership players goes, although he probably isn't the best match day tactician.

As far as the players go though, he has managed to get the absolute best out of everyone he could, and that's a major achievement.

Roos or Craig IMO. Laidley would be right up there as far as gameday tactics go but his player management is the worst in the league.

Lol at people voting for Matthew Knights.

Paul Roos, then Thompson.

I'm not voting but why would you laugh at people voting for Matthew Knights? I thought Essendon had the worst list with the worst youth? He's working to his players' strengths as has Roos at Sydney... only Knights has a more exciting brand of footy! ;)

Not everyone believed this.

He may eventually be very successful but it is funny when comparing him to premiership coaches.

Can't people even try to be objective.

Based on success then Roos, Thompson, Clarkson, Williams, Malthouse and Worsfold would be ahead of the rest.

Before you criticise Worsfold, he may not have the gameday nous of some of the other coaches but his record is excellent. Took a bottom side to 1 premiership, 1 grand final and 4 other finals appearances over 7 seasons. Implemented a very effective high handballing style of game. Elements of which were picked up by other clubs and he is a great motivator. Has also managed to completely reinvent our gameplan, which has seen us play some good football in the early part of the season and will hopefully oversee the rebuild of WC into a formidable squad. I would not be surprised if he takes us close to another grand final before he finishes at the club. Yet I am not bias enough to rate him yet as top 2 or 3, but I think some of his qualities more than make up for his supposed deficiencies.

He dropped them because they have put in lacklustre performances and have done for a while. Last year both players performed below par and Harris wasn't dropped at all and Jones should have been dropped earlier than when he was.

Simpson, Swallow, Ziebell are all ahead of Harris in an inside mid role and Warren and Edwards are ahead of Jones in the HFF role.

Hay played a total of 8 games in 2006.

Clarkson should get some praise here, I know i am probably biased but he took a rabble of side to a premiership in 4 years, whilst implementing a brand of zoning which half the other coaches are now copying, instilled a tough culture and a strong leadership base.

Id go Roos for consistency though

I reckon Mick Malthouse.

Consistently gets the best out of his group, even though they are a lot lower on talent than other clubs. He is the most proffesional coach in the way he handles the media too I have great respect for him.

And Cwood play finals year after year too, so that's a sign of a good coach. Plus the GFs he's taken them too and also his career before collingwood was also quite impressive.

Why is Matthew Knights coming second in this Poll? Oh OH, now I'm reminded just how deluded Bomber supporters are. For christ sake, he hasn't made the finals yet!

Deluded - I would have thought more loyal and possibly cheeky. The elite coaches atm would have to be Thompson, Roos, Lyon and Clarkson.

Ross Lyon hasn't won a premiership but he has the Saints surging when a lot of people had written their list off. Very hard for Clarkson to press his name right up there this year with Hawthorn diabolical injury list this year, but he has somewhat changed the game hasn't he?

This is a toughie.

My vote has to go with Roos. Never misses the finals, gets the best out of the players and (although not really coaching related) never loses his cool.
Close behind is Laidley(always under the heat yet somehow pulls the team together to make the finals) , thompson(geelong..enough said) and niel craig(consistent coach as always. Love what he done in the past and what he's doing at the present)
