Listening to alot of Rolled Gold at the moment and wanting to buy a couple of stones cd's.
Just wondering which one is the best to buy.

Beggars Banquet is my pick as the greatest of the Stones albums.

Also right up there are Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Goats Head Soup and Some Girls.

So much good stuff through the Stones back catalog.

Beggars Banquet is a very strong album and probably their best. I like it a lot but prefer the mid 60's english pop stones so would also highly recommend Between The Buttons my personal favorite.

Exile on Main St. doesn't get a mention??
But, my favourite is probably Let it Bleed, followed closely by Exile on Main St., then probably After-math.

As I said there is so much good stuff in the Stones back catalog it's hard to define it down to a few albums - Exile is an awesome album.

Exile On Main Street.
Stones.(Mixed collection)
Made In The Shade.(A Best of sorts)
Rolled Gold.(Very Best Of)

All great.

Exile On Main Street.

Or the first album, The Rolling Stones.

It's the cliched answer, but I love Exile. It's probably not the strongest in terms of songwriting. Though there are plenty of cracking tunes on here, the songwriting kind of represents a culmination and summary of everything they'd done up until then, rather than breaking much new ground.

What makes Exile the greatest rock and roll album ever is the production. It's perfectly engineered. It's this fantastically messy, warm, rich sound, instruments popping in and out all the time. It's made to be played loud. Really loud.

Also great is Keith Richards kind of yelling the background vocals all through. He's obviously a bit unsure of the lyrics a lot of the time, but he don't let that stop him, the filthy junkie.

Exile On Main Street is 'the' complete album with plenty of well-known tracks plus a horde of sensational album tracks. It's got a raw rootsy feel that has now been copied by other artists like the Black Crowes for example.

Goats Head soup is probably one of the most under-rated Stones' albums ever and for the life of my I can't understand why. It's got hits (Angie, Heartbreaker) plus quality album cuts (Mr. D, Silver Train, Hide Your Love).

Some Girls was a major comeback album for them after a string of not so consistent albums, pure quality all the way.

Black & Blue showed the Stones were adaptable and prepared to experiment, best of all, it was Ronnie Wood's first album with them.

Won't list the one's already listed but I also like Dirty Work (predominantly Richards' work as Jagger was off working on solo stuff), Voodoo Lounge and Bigger Bang. Still capable of producing the good stuff but nobody listens to it any more.

Not to mention the guitars on that album. Awesome.
