Many strong sides indeed. Some of the greatest in the history of the game perhaps, that on their day, were unlucky or simply the big stage got to them and they choked.

We had the great West Coast side of 1991 that won their first 12 games of the season and would go on to capture greatness a year later becoming the first side to take the cup out of Victoria. A roaring North Melbourne outfit led by King Carey who should have been out of sight by half time amassing 6.15 to the Crows 4.3 in 1998. Essendon of 2001 who a year before tasted defeat in just a single game all season and arguably were the best side the year before that too. The Brisbane Lions who won 3 successive flags and played in a fourth before succumbing to Port Adelaide who finally broke through after 3 years of heartache. Perhaps if the Lions didn't have to play a '' home '' prelim in Melbourne the week before, they would have claimed a 4th successive premiership. The Sydney Swans were a point or two off going back to back when they lost the deciding rematch in 2006 to West Coast. The great Geelong of 2008, lost just one game all season before the big dance and were gunning for back to back. In many people's opinion { and mine } the best team ever to not win a flag. We'd get it again the next year, and another 2 years after that losing the best player in the competition. The Saints of 2009 were another force to be reckoned with, as were the Pies of 2011, champions just a year before.

What about the Hawks of 2012, that were in it all game. led by 16 points in the last quarter and would just fall short. They went on to win 3 straight after that. In 2011 lost by a whisker to the Black and White army { left out of the Poll by mistake }

And out of respect that they earned for being a great team in the history of the game I'll throw the Dons outfit of 1999 in there too. They were remarkable.

Due to not having enough teams in the Poll, I've left out some sides like Blues 99, Dees 2000, Port 2007

Who were the best 5 of sides not to win it.

1992 Cats for sure.
Between 1989 to 1995 played in 4 losing grand finals.
1992 probably the year they should have won it.
Top of ladder end of home and away with probably biggest points for ever.
Lead by two goals, half time in grand final. Blew it against Eagles that had more balanced team.
They just lacked the star defender. As a group, Bairstow, Couch, Hocking brothers, Ablett, Bews, Brownless. Stoneham, Linder, Hinkley, Bruns, Riccardi, Robert Scott, Barnes, Tim McGrath, Geoff Miles, Andrew Wills and Damian Bourke was a strong group. Just lacked final piece to puzzle. If they had a Glen Jakovich or Stephan Silvagni star key defender they probably win a flag in this period rather than runners up four times. Four times runner up was their lot.

Jayzus Christ!

Where The eF is Hawthorn of 2012?.....Finished as minor Premiers, only lost in the last minute & then went on to win the next 3.

We also had our first seeding summarily handed to the Swans on a platter by the AFL admin of VLAD on a whim.....Meaning they got to play Collingwood in a prelim off a 6 day break, while our opponents in Adelaide got an 8 day break....On top of which, the Swans also received an extra days break prior to the Grand Final, even though we finished First & them 3rd.

Unbelievable omission & typical floggish Cats behaviour.

You're joking surely?

Got smashed & weren't even at the races that day.

Asked for best (most talented) team, not closest grand final.

If you believe in that game that the Swans showed anywhere near the level that they had shown all year that season, that's crazy.

Yeah but by that standard they're still miles behind Geelong 2008, who went 21-1 with a 160+ percentage.

One dimensional forward line of Buddy....Defence got shown up by us all year.

After 2012 there was only ever going to be one result in 2014.....In spite of all the media hyperbole & hoopla to the contrary.

And every Hawk supporter knew it.

(going by the poll question rather than the thread title, which for some reason are different things )
my top five would be:

1- Geelong 2008
2- Collingwood 2011
3- West Coast 1991
4- St.Kilda 2009
5- Essendon 1999

Hawthorn 2012 were a very good team who by September, had comfortably positioned themselves as the strongest side in the comp. if I recall correctly, a Tom Hawkins 55m goal on the siren caused their only defeat between round 9 or 10 and the grand final.

Unfortunately half our side were banged-up on the day....Especially Cyril & Hodgey.

The weather did us absolutely zero favours that day, on top of the AFL's already enacted duplicity.....Swirly unpredictable gale, wet & wild.....Played right into the Swans hands.

They kicked so many out of their arses that day, while Buddy couldn't hit the side of a barn door by the end.

One dimensional forward line of Rioli, Bruest, Roughead, Puopolo, Gunston and Franklin. Yeah, right.

Sure....We owed them big time for the dirty way they stole Buddy from us & in the way he stabbed us in the back.....Not to mention retributive justice for the stolen 2012 Flag, thanks in no small part to a major leg-up from AFL admin.

Sorry, you might've meant 2014. But arguing about Hawthorn being banged up in 2012 when the Swans lost their ruckman and Richards and Goodes were playing on one leg? If the weather was bad and the wind swirly surely Hawthorn was well placed to read the conditions given the Grand Final is played at your home ground?

Twas nice n warm & sunny in 2014.

I reckon most pundits felt the weather played an important hand in bringing us back to the Swans level in 2012.

Tight n scrappy is how you guys like it & the S.C.G suits that style rather well....A wet n wild M.C.G meant that skills were somewhat diluted on that day.

The weather in 2012 is taking on myth-like status. The truth is there was talk of bad weather in the lead-up that didn't eventuate. I'm told there might've been a light sprinkle at half time but if there was I was getting a drink and missed it. I'm sure the Hawks know every nook and gust variation given the MCG is home. An advantage and statistical anomaly to this whole poll most teams don't enjoy.
