Best team for 2011

Now, with this season mathematically over, I’m just looking through our team currently and after taking into account, what I believe will be

1) McLeod retiring
2) Hentschel and Jacky being delisted.

I believe this will be the 22 we start the year off.

B: Johncock-Rutten-Stevens
HB: Otten-Davis-Doughty
C: Mackay-Vince-van Berlo
HF: Knights-Walker-Douglas
F: Dangerfield-Tippett-Porplyzia
R: Maric-S.Thompson-Sloane
Int: Griffin-Reilly-Symes-Martin
Emg: Sellar-Henderson-Jaensch

Not named (But on Senior list): Young, Shaw, Talia, Cook, Petrenko, Gunston, McKernan, Craig, Armstrong and Moran
Not named (Rookie list): Riley, L.Thompson, Wright, Schmidt and Martyn

Also, I find it hard to legitimately confirm van Berlo as a 100 percent starter, therefore will give Rutten the captaincy or perhaps even S.Thompson.

Now, some reasons for why some players are in and why they’re there

Stevens, Doughty, van Berlo, Reilly and Symes are in ahead of youngsters due to the internal pressure that will be put on the selection committee to play them ahead of youngsters, due to their contracts. If they do not play when fit, they will have to be delisted at years end, while there is heavy criticism towards the club for having $100,000+ contracts for these older players who are clogging the list and making it tougher to entice younger players to stay (because these guys are taking their $ when they don’t deserve it) – So in other words, they’ll have gold passes.

Now, my reasons for some of my selection choices.

1) Walker vs Tippett – It isn’t just a battle in my eyes for who is the better player. It’s more a battle of, is Walker at Centre Half Forward and Tippett at Full Forward better than Tippett at centre half forward and Walker at Full Forward. Tippett is a better contest mark and supplies greater frontal pressure. Walker is a better lead up forward and has an accurate and huge leg. I feel it is best for the team to have Tippett one out deep in the forward line while we have skilful players across our half forward line who can set up Tippett. Walker is also far superior as a centre half forward than Tippett. He can lead better and then put it on the chest of a leading forward in front of him, and if he gets within 55 meters he can shoot for goal unlike Tippett who unless connects brilliantly, struggles for 40 meters. Therefore with me believing Walker at Centre Half Forward and Tippett being at Full Forward being the better of the 2 options. I’ve lined them up in these positions.
2) Sloane vs Dangerfield – Both are certain starters, but I had to toss them up between the Forward Pocket and in the guts. Both are great in tight and I’d love to fit them both into the guts. But they both provide a presence up forward. Dangerfield as a strong marking medium forward as well as crumbing, while Sloane just appears to be the small forward who is there for his frontal pressure. They would both be great in either position. But in the end, I find it an easy choice. Sloane seems to have more of a tank, and he isn’t a complete kamikaze like Dangerfield, and rationing our use of Dangerfield in the midfield will allow his career to last longer, while providing maximum damage with him being in our forward line. I’d like to see Sloane 55% midfield, 25% forward line and 20% rest. While Dangerfield can go a more 40% midfield, 40% forward line and 20% rest. Both will be great players in whatever position is chosen for them. But in the long run it is best for the club to have Dangerfield being used in short spurts, until he either gets a larger tank and a more consistent midfielder.

So I was wondering 2 things.

1) Your thoughts on the team I’ve named
2) What you believe our best 22 is

B: Stevens, Rutten, Johncock
HB: Symes, Davis, Otten
C: MacKay, Thompson, Van Berlo
HF: Knights, Walker, Douglas
F: Porplyzia, Tippett, Henderson
R: Maric, Vince, Dangerfield
IC: Moran, Sloane, Martin, Reilly

i wouldn't be inclined to have the 2-immobile ruckman. it's got to be one of Maric/Griffin, so Sellar IN, Griffin OUT. also, Henderson isn't in your starting 22??? i'm sure he can fit.

B: Johncock Rutten Stevens
HB: Symes Davis Doughty
C: Mackay Vince van Berlo
HF: Knights Walker Douglas
F: Henderson Tippett Porplyzia
R: Maric S.Thompson Dangerfield
Int: Sellar Reilly Otten Sloane
Emg:-Jaensch, Petrenko, Gunston

Not named: Young, Shaw, Talia, Cook, Martin, McKernan, Craig, Moran, Griffin, Schmidt, Riley (upgraded), Wright (upgraded), Jacky (pretty sure AFC signed him till end of 2011)
Rookie list: L.Thompson (2nd year on RL), and Martyn (2nd year on RL)
Gone: McLeod, Goodwin, Edwards, Burton, Hentschel, Bock
B: Stevens, Rutten, Johncock
HB: Symes, Davis, Otten
C: MacKay, Thompson, Van Berlo
HF: Knights, Walker, Douglas
F: Porplyzia, Tippett, Henderson
R: Maric, Vince, Dangerfield
IC: Moran, Sloane, Martin, Reilly
implying Doughty will be delisted? or just won't be good enough to make starting 22?

FB: Johncock, Rutten, Young
CHB: Petrenko, Davis, van Berlo
C: Mackay, Dangerfield, Martin
CHF: Knights, Tippett, Henderson
FF: Porplyzia, Walker, Jaensch
R: Maric, Thompson, Douglas
Int: Sellar, Vince, Sloane, Reilly

If Knights leaves, replace him with Sloane, and put Symes to the bench. Of course I won't be alive to see how we fare next year because if Knights leaves I'll kill myself. :)

Personally I would have given the last spot to jaensch. Kicking is his strength (certainly more so than armstrong). Interesting you eliminated Henderson so early, I would have him on the HFF instead of Douglas, and then dougie somewhere else, but as you say that then requires a reshuffle, and someone else to go out.

As for the best 22, I think you're about right (including emergencies). Our ruck division is anybodies guess, based on the form he was in last year, I would like to see moran in there, but he hasn't played at all this year, and pretty much the same for Sellar. I don't think the ruck division next year will look much like it did this year, as long as the footy gods a kind with regard to injuries.

Neither. I must have been living under a rock or something because I thought he was a good chance of hanging up the boots:o.
i don't expect him to retire, because he's not injury prone or anything, but just looking up his age...he is already 31 years old . guess there's always a chance.

My best 22 though:
FB: Johncock, Rutten, Stevens
CHB: Otten, Davis, van Berlo
C: Mackay, Dangerfield, Doughty
CHF: Knights, Tippett, Henderson
FF: Porplyzia, Walker, Jaensch
R: Griffin, Thompson, Douglas
Int: Sellar, Vince, Sloane, Reilly
Stevens and Doughty will still be best 22 players next year, I would almost put a bet on it.

Russell kept saying on the weekend that we have asked Doughty to play on next year.

Well it does make sense I suppose. He is still playing good football and hasn't been troubled by injury like Goody and Macca so he could probably play on if he wants to. We need someone with his experience out there next year to assist the younger guys. Hard to believe he'll be the oldest in the team if he indeed plays on:eek:.

B: Stevens, Rutten, Johncock
HB: Symes, Davis, Otten
C: MacKay, Thompson, Van Berlo
HF: Knights, Walker, Douglas
F: Porplyzia, Tippett, Henderson
R: Maric, Vince, Dangerfield
IC: Moran, Sloane, Martin, Reilly

Apparently the club has asked Dogga to stay on for one more season.

Russell got it right - he has been asked to go around again next year.

What's more he wanted to play on, so he will.

We'll be very thin on the ground for senior players next year.

Exactly right. And as much as he is maligned on this board, Doughty has been a solid player for us this year who should finish top 10 in our B&F. There is no reason why he shouldn't go on, so glad he is.

Definitely. Seniors are: Thompson, Rutten, Stevens, Doughty, possibly Johncock (this is assuming macca retires)

Unbelievable how much experience we have lost this year.

Blimey, we're gonna be a young side next year...

From the teams being posted we are assuming that Knighta is staying and that the AFC isn't going to chase a ready made mid from another club.

With Bocky gone and just about every senior player we must have a pretty big war chest for trade week and have to think we'd have a big crack at getting someone or someones from another club(s).

Hope to see some unfamilar names on the list yet. Revisit this after trade week.

B: Johncock , Rutten, Stevens
HB: Otten, Davis, Petrenko
C: MacKay, Thompson, Van Berlo
HF: Henderson, Tippett, Dangerfield
F: Porplyzia, Walker, Sloane
R: Maric, Douglas, Vince
IC: Sellar, Doughty, Reilly,Jaensch
Emergencies: Gunston, Symes, McKernan, Martin

Put Sloane in as a defensive forward. Most of the top teams have one so thought we could do with one.
I put Petrenko at half back because I think that's where he plays his best footy.
Left Knights and Griffin out because their futures with the club are unclear.
Only a rough copy. Will change after the list has been finalized.

I like Drummonds 22 the best.

About Doughty, this year might be different but if it was any other year where we weren't losing so much experience he would be delisted as we don't usually keep B graders past 30 or so.

I would love for Stevens to retire but i'm sure he'll clog up the list for another year. I really hope we play Petrenko down back, he will really prosper back there.

With the current list my team is:

B: Petrenko, Rutten, Otten
HB: Johncock, Davis, Dangerfield
C: Mackay, Van Berlo, Martin
CHF: Knights, Walker, Henderson
FF: Porplyzia, Tippett, Jaensch*
R: Maric, Thompson, Douglas
Int: Sellar, Vince, Sloane, Reilly

Emergencies/Depth Players: Symes, Gunston, Stevens, Doughty, McKernan

*I'm hoping for miracles that McLeod can get himself up :) and he could then slot into the forward pocket crumber/tackler role

In any case, we cant do this properly until trade week is over - hopefully we can pick up an A-grade running midfielder plus a decent forward crumber/tackler

Can't wait to get Otten back - whether that be in defence or in the midfield.

It would also be interesting to see D-Mack in the midfield as a reciever, although I'm not sure I want to take him away from the wing.

Sloane has to stay in the guts. He is only going to get better and his grunt and effort will be needed in the engine.

I agree that our depth is looking a little shaky, however have we ever had that much depth in the past decade?

But man oh man do we have a young side next year. I wonder which one or two of Talia, Gunston, Smack will step up next year.

B: Johncock, Rutten, Stevens
HB: Doughty, Davis, Van Berlo
C: Mackay, Vince, Martin
CHF: Knights, Walker, Henderson
FF: Porplyzia, Tippett, Dangerfield
R: Maric, Thompson, Douglas
Int: Sellar, Sloane, Reilly, Otten

thats for me. I'm not sure about Henderson, I have a feeling it could be Sellar in his position and Moran in as ruck.

Why are people worrying about Henderson being our best 22? He has been a star since he has come in, runs hard, amazing skills, and has run down a lot of very quick players. His forward line pressure is the best in our team closely followed by Dangerfield. He is only going to get better so i would think he is a lock from now on.

No rrom for Otten or you having a lend with Young?

2011 is not looking pretty as of now. Surely with no Bock we are going to struggle badly. I still can't get over that he is leaving. But we will hopefully improve over forthcoming years. Lets see where we are in 4 or 5 years time.

Am I alone in thinking that our backline functioned better this year with Davis, rather than Bock? I seemed to recall a nice Bock-less winning streak at one point.

Bock, when fit, is a very accomplished player, but he is nowhere near as big a loss as your suggesting.

I'm actually quietly confident about 2011, especially if we trade well.
