Now, with this season mathematically over, I’m just looking through our team currently and after taking into account, what I believe will be
1) McLeod retiring
2) Hentschel and Jacky being delisted.
I believe this will be the 22 we start the year off.
B: Johncock-Rutten-Stevens
HB: Otten-Davis-Doughty
C: Mackay-Vince-van Berlo
HF: Knights-Walker-Douglas
F: Dangerfield-Tippett-Porplyzia
R: Maric-S.Thompson-Sloane
Int: Griffin-Reilly-Symes-Martin
Emg: Sellar-Henderson-Jaensch
Not named (But on Senior list): Young, Shaw, Talia, Cook, Petrenko, Gunston, McKernan, Craig, Armstrong and Moran
Not named (Rookie list): Riley, L.Thompson, Wright, Schmidt and Martyn
Also, I find it hard to legitimately confirm van Berlo as a 100 percent starter, therefore will give Rutten the captaincy or perhaps even S.Thompson.
Now, some reasons for why some players are in and why they’re there
Stevens, Doughty, van Berlo, Reilly and Symes are in ahead of youngsters due to the internal pressure that will be put on the selection committee to play them ahead of youngsters, due to their contracts. If they do not play when fit, they will have to be delisted at years end, while there is heavy criticism towards the club for having $100,000+ contracts for these older players who are clogging the list and making it tougher to entice younger players to stay (because these guys are taking their $ when they don’t deserve it) – So in other words, they’ll have gold passes.
Now, my reasons for some of my selection choices.
1) Walker vs Tippett – It isn’t just a battle in my eyes for who is the better player. It’s more a battle of, is Walker at Centre Half Forward and Tippett at Full Forward better than Tippett at centre half forward and Walker at Full Forward. Tippett is a better contest mark and supplies greater frontal pressure. Walker is a better lead up forward and has an accurate and huge leg. I feel it is best for the team to have Tippett one out deep in the forward line while we have skilful players across our half forward line who can set up Tippett. Walker is also far superior as a centre half forward than Tippett. He can lead better and then put it on the chest of a leading forward in front of him, and if he gets within 55 meters he can shoot for goal unlike Tippett who unless connects brilliantly, struggles for 40 meters. Therefore with me believing Walker at Centre Half Forward and Tippett being at Full Forward being the better of the 2 options. I’ve lined them up in these positions.
2) Sloane vs Dangerfield – Both are certain starters, but I had to toss them up between the Forward Pocket and in the guts. Both are great in tight and I’d love to fit them both into the guts. But they both provide a presence up forward. Dangerfield as a strong marking medium forward as well as crumbing, while Sloane just appears to be the small forward who is there for his frontal pressure. They would both be great in either position. But in the end, I find it an easy choice. Sloane seems to have more of a tank, and he isn’t a complete kamikaze like Dangerfield, and rationing our use of Dangerfield in the midfield will allow his career to last longer, while providing maximum damage with him being in our forward line. I’d like to see Sloane 55% midfield, 25% forward line and 20% rest. While Dangerfield can go a more 40% midfield, 40% forward line and 20% rest. Both will be great players in whatever position is chosen for them. But in the long run it is best for the club to have Dangerfield being used in short spurts, until he either gets a larger tank and a more consistent midfielder.
So I was wondering 2 things.
