Guys, as with last year I am participating for Melbourne in the Big Footy phantom draft. I have seen a few of the other people participating in this post threads on the team boards for quesitons and feedback....I have a soft spot for Melbourne and follow them as closely as I can, so would appreicate comments as to team balance/structure and draft needs as well as field any questions about the juniors and who Melbourne might be looking at in the draft. I will do my best to answer them. NB - this was only a trial run, the actual phantom draft will be held sometime in early November.

Melbourne – Gilly1972
Pick 3 - Cale Morton - Wingman/Utility - 192cm 75kgs - Claremont
Pick 19 - Scott Simpson - KP Forward - 194cm 91kgs - Dandenong Stingrays
Pick 35 - Matthew De Boer - Wingman/HFF - 185cm 81kgs - Claremont
Pick 51 - John McCarthy -Utility - 187cm 79kg - Dandenong Stingrays
Pick 67 - Jared Petrenko -Onballer - 176cm 75kg – Woodville-West Torrens

Where abouts do you have Tom Collier going? i think we will get him because we really need a good defender and apperently hes the pick of the bunch

Thaks for you help Gilly, I dont know much about any off the blokes in this draft but from above.

Morton looks very light, does he have any future as a KPP, or is he more of a Cam Bruce type, either way the best available talent has to be taken with the top pick.

We need a ruckman, preferably talented, pick 19 might be the right one to use on a ruckman. Any chance of McEvoy holding out to 19, or Bellchambers maybe.

Is DeBoer quick, pace would be nice.

Patrenko looks short, will he cut it???

Pick 53 - Chris (Chopper) Mayne - Utility - 182 cm - Perth, can we get a guy called Chopper!

Cam Bruce is probably a pretty good comparison for Morton. He is light and a bit outside atm. Might fill out to be a KPP in time, but I see him more as a tall, highly skilled wingman/HBF, more like your Bruce or Dunn. His kicking over 40-60 m is elite. Come draft day (assuming you have pick #4) I basically see it coming down to Morton/Henderson/McEvoy for your first pick. Henderson and McEvoy may be a better fit.

I'd be very very surprised if McEvoy slipped to your second round pick. Bellchambers might be thereabouts, but I'm not sure I rate him that highly.....perhaps you might look to more of a project ruckman later on if you don't take McEvoy in the first round.

DeBoer is not a jet but has good enough speed for AFL. Phantom drafts are really a stab in the dark though, so for me it was more about getting best available where I could, rather than thinking you might get them on draft day. He will most likely play on a wing perhaps in the centre somewhere down the track at AFL level, perhaps a replacement for McDonald.

Petrenko is short, but is a jet and has nice skills. He is more in the Danyle Pearce mould, but I wasn't following juniors then so can't really compare on respective development. I doubt he will be that good, but I still think he is bit of a bargain where i got him.....would probably play in a FP in the outset.

I haven't seen Chopper Mayne play but he comes with good wraps from WA, and I agree, you would love to cheer for a guy called chopper :D

The impression I get is that your needs are probably a KPP with presence, a ruckman and some more pace through the midfield.

I see Collier as more of a mobile backman, perhaps playing on a third tall, similar to Rivers and Frawley.....I have other question marks over him which I won't go into. I would consider him at #21 or #37 but not at #4.

Scott Simpson could fall in the right time for us, 18-22.

McEvoy should be gone by our 2nd round pick but Bellchambers would be OK.

Morton's obviously best available at 4 but in terms of needs Henderson and McEvoy fit better, despite the fact their both definately not the 4th best player in the draft. It will be an interesting choice.

Theres a ruckman called Zac Dawson that goes alright. Woulden't pick him at 1 but he has beaten Kruzer this year when they played the Bushrangers.

Adam Maric is another forward I want, he's like a Tony Modra type, can take a grab and very clever. He made All Australian as well playing for Vic.

My mistake Captain, It should have read Dawson Simpson.

I like big Daws too....might be in your sights for a second rounder in the actual draft. In the phantom I probably wouldn't use a second rounder on him, perhaps see if he falls to the third round, IMO that would be an excellent result.

What about Mr Maric Gilly ?
For what I've seen of him (last years TAC grand final and a game against the WA) he looks like a Brett Ebert or Brad Johnson, small forward who can kick a bag of goals and plays like a tall. Also has one of the most fleunt goal kicking actions I have ever seen. Unfortunately I can't see us drafting him, using pick 4 on a small (but highly) effective goalkicker would be a waste if we can get a gun midfielder or big man. And I definitely can't see him being around at pick 21.

Any chance of Cotchin or Palmer slipping through to Pick #4? Those two, from the little I know, look like great players but I have a feeling that these 2, with Kreuzer, will go in the Top 3.

There is a lot of talk about Melbourne needing to draft another ruckman, but what about young Shane Neaves? I heard that he is developing into a more than useful tap-ruckman with Sandy. I still think our midfield group is over-rated with the exception of James McDonald. We seem to always get smashed in the clearances. (40-29 against Freo). And I heard that Morton's more of an outside mid, than an inside clearance player. If Cotchin's not available, than I think we should take a serious look at Brad Ebert. And If was I after an outside mid I personally would take Rioli over Morton.

We should trade for a tall and go after Ebert in the draft. Will be the best of the lot of them.

Palmer is a proven big match player where as Kruezer couldn't perform when it counted. Looks a bit soft too me.

What about Mr Maric Gilly ?

I like Maric, think he has the makings of a dangerous small forward who will consistently chip in for a couple of goals week in, week out. Not sure I'd use pick 21 on him at this stage....doubt he would be around at #36.

IMO Cotchin won't go past #3. With respect to Palmer I probably still rate a few of the talls ahead of him and I think they suit your needs better anyway. Palmer would be a good eventual replacement for a Moloney for argument's sake, but I think you have more pressing needs.

What order do you think these 5 will go in?

Henderson, Ebert, Palmer, Masten and Rance.

Would you say these are the 5 we'd we looking at?

Would you say these are the 5 we'd we looking at?

1) Erbert and/or Palmer and Rance

2) Henderson (Rance should be on a higher priorty because the club need to strengthen the backline. Having to get Simpson as a kpp-ff already in round 2, pick 21, the club should go after Rance)

3) Not too sure about Masten.

Should the club consider Selwood and Dawson Simpson (207cm ruckman)?

I think Rance (FB, CHB), McEvoy (Ruck, FF), Morton (Utlility) and Henderson (CHF, FF, CHB) would be the four you would be having a close look at....all would be good enough to be considered for pick #4.
