Canberra, Geelong next then can start with the minor cities getting 2nd teams.
Maybe even Nth Qld and Newcastle. But both need grounds.

Its Geelong by miles. 1/ They have the ground ready to go, it will hold 35000. 2/ They love their sport in Geelong. 3/ Weather is perfect 4/ Train station 5 minutes from the entrance. 5/ Short walk to the city centre. No need to look anywhere else.

This is idiotic if they want to play at Fremantle Oval. You'd need at least 50 million to get that place to standard, which has about as much chance of getting through the council as a nuclear power plant built on the Esplanade. Never mind that no-one's forking out that sort of money for 4 matches a year.

It's the worst ground in the WAFL. The only thing it's got going for it is the history of the place, which is far outweighed by the utter lack of spectator comfort (which is zero).

Both Cairns & Townsville have grounds to suit I dont think Newcastle has.. Its really just a matter of how many teams they want in BBL. I would have thought ACT & GC next. They have excellent grounds.

I don't know Perth very well, nor do I understand the geography of grounds or the north/south of the river thing.

But wouldn't the argument likely be that one of the teams play out of the WACA and the other play out of the new Perth Stadium?

Would a Nth Qld team really work that well? It'd have to be based in Townsville for the weather (surely Cairns would be too wet?) and not sure the demand is there for a sports team other than league.
Hadnt thought of the weather aspect. Good point

They do? Cool but as someone pointed out the weather up there might suck at the time.

ACT and Geelong both have great grounds ready to go and have proven they attend. GC may have the ground but so far (in any sport) they dont attend.

Perth already has a team. Geelong does not.
Hense my comment of Geelong getting one before the minor cities get their 2nd.
Our 'minor' city has 2 titles.

The two sides from your 'major' city have 0 combined.

Would say we deserve a 2nd side before they start dishing them out to Victorian regional centres.

This.

Stupidest idea I've heard this week, to play cricket at Freo Oval.

I'm not arguing either way, but just pointing out that the base of the next team has literally 0 to do with team success.

It's stadiums, money, viability, attendence and TV viewership...

Perth 2nd team might be a better candidate than Geelong under those criteria, I don't pretend to know, but you can quit believing winning titles will make a difference to Perth getting a 2nd team.

Ummmm my city?

Sixers won year 1.
Thunder current champs.

So no.

I disagree. You seem to take it personal which is weird but no way Perth gets a 2nd side before Canberra and Geelong and possibly another QLD side.

lol.......no.
The WACA is a horrible venue, if any new club was to play there you may as well board them up before they play a game. They'd lack identity and be up against the team offering a much better package across the river (and the new stadium is literally on the other side of the river from the WACA).

To be honest, a Fremantle team is about as good a chance to work as anything else. But they need a much better proposal. Even Subiaco Oval would be better than Fremantle Oval. One of the weaknesses of the BBL is the sole reliance on existing stadia, as they don't play enough games to warrant upgrades solely for BBL teams.

The new stadium might entice BBL to create a new WA team. Its another reason for WA3 in the AFL; )

You know what we WAers are like, and yeah I do get a tad annoyed when we are referred to as a 'minor' city. Shit call, for me.

Apologies, 'your' clearly wasn't the best choice of words. Should have said the state you were advocating for.

T20 support is great over here and a second team could well succeed. The only issue I have with the BB is the lack of quality internationals we can attract due to the timing of the tournament.

My apologies. Meant no disrespect.

I can see a time when BB becomes the major sport/comp of the summer stretching for a full 20 rounds. So i think in the end we will only have trouble with india and their "ban".

It's a great idea in theory...

...until any plans for expansion/redevelopment of Freo Oval gets anywhere near council.

Freo Society: "You can't remove that row of seats - Bernie Naylor was conceived there!"
Moonbeam Mungbean on South Terrace: "You can't build extra lights - it would add to carbon emissions!"
Councillor Dreadlock: "I'm concerned about this rare variety of microscopic mould, which would be in huge danger from spectators!"

There's a very good reason the Dockers are moving to Cockburn.

I think they're piggy backing off the redevelopment which is being planned anyway

Id say east freo is worse but agree freo oval is a shocking idea for cricket. Of all the wafl grounds its the one with the least room for redevelopment.

WA certainly seemed to embrace the Big Bash earlier than most and have had rabid support the entire time. That plus the stadium makes the case for a second team. Though personally I don't see the need for any new teams.

As an aside, the 'minor city' stuff annoys me too. We're not that far off overhauling Brisbane as the third biggest city in Australia. How big does it have to get to be 'major'.
