The Champions T20 League wasn't a bad comp, good concept with some memorable matches. Whilst the IPL teams took precedence, this tended to not reflect on the outcome of each tournament with state / national sides like T&T and New South Wales taking it out a few times. I think in theory it was meant to be shared as a venue across India, South Africa and here, but I think the scheduling difficulties and coordination between respective cricket boards just made it too difficult in the end.

looks like we're getting more games next year rather than any expansion plans.
it should have been the various winners of the comps playing off against each other, but I guess if you only had 1 IPL team involved then that dilutes the tv rights dollars. (plus CA, BCCI and CSA having a significant investment in the concept)

The reason why the BB has gotten massively popular is because it is entirely FTA, to give a portion to be Fox exclusive would be suicidal.

I responded to this comment a few weeks back saying I would concede to your point if the Geelong game pulled more than 25k. They didn't quite get there (23.5k) but it was still a pretty good crowd. However, I think what it does prove is you can't point to AFL attendances to dictate a city's interest in cricket. If Geelong was mad for T20 cricket like they are for the Cats, we would have seen at least 30k at that game.
On a related note, we've seen a bit of media coverage regarding expansion of the league over the last few days and some interesting excerpts:
Those quotes seem to imply Canberra, Townsville and Gold Coast are looking more likely to receive their own BBL franchise in the near future and Geelong may continue to serve as a regional venue for the Renegades for years to come. Townsville being mentioned as a realistic option for expansion is a curious one for mine but I agree with Canberra and Gold Coast.

Does Queensland need three teams? I get that Townsville is significantly removed from Brisbane but in that case I'd just have Brisbane Heat play a few games in the Gold Coast.

Just because some people in Townsville want a team doesn't mean they will get one.
the last time they had a break after the last round, in 2013-14 (BBL3), it halted any particular climax IIRC. will be bloody ridiculous
Queensland won't get three teams. They will however get two teams in the near future when Gold Coast are admitted into the BBL.
Far more likely to see Brisbane/Gold Coast play home games in Townsville and Cairns.

Would also be extremely stupid, as the comp is played in the wet season. Most home games would be washed out.

The number of matches is probably ok. However the season could be condensed more. ie; more double headers between mens & womens comp to maximise TV coverage something which isn't happening at present. Better utilisation of Perth timezone in both mens & womens comp to maximise TV coverage.
The 'soft' expansion has proven to be pretty successful for the BBL to date this season:

3 Jan - Renegades v Sixers @ Geelong: 23,586
13 Jan - Scorchers v Strikers @ Alice Springs
24 Jan - Thunder v Renegades @ Canberra (reportedly sold out)
I'm certain we'll see more 'regional' games added to the BBL fixtures next season.

Every team should claim a regional centre as their own and play at least 1 home game in that town. Especially if the BBL were to move to a full home and away fixture.
Agreed. Alice Springs is just spoiled. AFL games, BBL games. There are plenty of other regional cities that would love an opportunity. Alice Springs isnt even growing. Don't know why these big sports organisations bother goimg there.

the stupidest things about these regional games, is that all sides should host one. I mean Brisbane have some pretty good options to take a game to (Gold Coast, although that’s sidelined due to Comm Games, Cairns, Mackay, Townsville if you’re willing to gamble with the wet season) but aren’t. Ditto with the Sixers (Coffs Harbour, Wollongong to name a few) and the Stars (any grounds suitable in Bendigo/Ballarat?). scorchers are probably tougher to get a ground suitable (Hands Oval in Bunbury maybe?)

Launceston game was on a Saturday and Launceston is two hours from Hobart
Geelong is an hours train for Etihad Stadium.
Normal game attending fans would’ve made both trips (more so in Geelong which probably explains a decent percentage of attendance difference). The real test will be when two venues practically in the middle of no where in terms of where BBL teams are located.

You talk as though a 4 hour round trip is nothing!
Also - the trip from Southern Cross to Geelong isn't long. But you've gotta get there first. I don't think the people who live at the Docklands make up much of the Renegades fan demographic. That's a 3 hour plus round trip as well.
They're both significant amounts of time, especially if you're travelling with kids.
The Tasmania trip is a stretch but would’ve been done by a few.
I would’ve thought most Renegades fans chose them over the Stars because of it being easier to get to Etihad than the MCG. A large amount of their fans would live in the Western Suburbs. If you lived in say Werribee it’d be a similar distance to both venues. I’ve got no doubt that Melbourne Metro residents made up a decent percentage of the Geelong attendance. Families wouldn’t make the trip but cricket lovers who go to games with mates and/or by themselves would.
There’s almost zero chance people do Alice Springs or Canberra journeys just for a BBL game though. FWIW I think Canberra people will show up in force but Alice Springs game may struggle a bit in comparison to the other three venues- and will show why there isn’t regional games in more places across Australia (excluding Gold Coast which is due to Comm. games).

No doubt some fans would've travelled - but if you're able to watch 4 games in Melbourne or in Hobart, I would think that only the diehards are going to travel to see the extra game. And I'm just not sure how many true diehards there are. The competition just isn't old enough yet. It's not like the footy teams that we've grown up with, it's going to be the current generation of kids who grow up with those teams, and who (hopefully) become those diehards.
I probably consider myself one of a diehard of Melbourne Victory - but even before the sweltering heat on Saturday, there wasn't a minute that I considered going down to Geelong to watch their game on Saturday. It's just too much of a pain in the arse getting to the city, then getting to Geelong. And I'm only in the inner northern suburbs.
I'm not sure there are enough regional centres in Australia with the population size and/or stadium infrastructure to support each existing BBL franchise going regional. Look at the top 15 populated cities in Australia (June 2016):

The teams in bold already have BBL teams and the teams in italics are within 200kms of cities with existing BBL franchises. In order for every team in the BBL to play regional games, you would need to play in nearly all of those unbolded cities listed above.
- Brisbane playing at Metricon (25k) on the Gold Coast is an obvious fit.
- The Sixers could play at Newcastle's Number One Sports Ground (20k).
- Thunder are already playing games at Manuka (16k) in Canberra.
- Sunshine Coast could be a future option for Brisbane if Gold Coast get their own BBL team. Not sure if they have a suitable ground though.
- Wollongong probably becomes an option for the Thunder if Canberra get their own BBL team. Not sure if they have a suitable ground though.
- Renegades are already playing games at Kardinia (34k) in Geelong.
- Townsville & Cairns are options for the Heat if they wish to engage in more than one regional game. Also an option for the Gold Coast in the future if they get their own team. Suitable stadiums do exist but the wet season is a concern.
- Darwin an option for the Strikers and/or the Scorchers. Stadium does exist but the wet season is a concern.
- Launceston (86k people) and Alice Springs (29k people) already host BBL games with the Hurricanes and Strikers respectively.
Having said all that, you're really stretching it to make all of that a reality. I think we'll simply see some teams not playing regional games.
