Big forwards

I think first thing first is Gunston needs to be put back in the forward line... we missed his 50 odd goals this year.
I understand he was required in the backline and it was "for the team" but realistically we need to stick him back in the forward line and recruit areas of shortcomings that allow that to happen first.

Why do you think, because he was a former number 2 pick that is a forward. That beats every thing apparently. Even if he has no form at AFL level.

Haha just like O'Rourke ay... don't worry he'll come good! He was a number 2 pick after all, he MUST be good.

I don't quite get how people can't put it on if their workload and caloric intake are on point. I put on size even when I only do body-weight exercise and drop heavy weights altogether.

Having said that, I can't run for shit.
That's your answer. If you were running as much as these guys you would be dropping bulk like crazy too. It's hard to do the lifting and eating required while also running 10-15k's a day doing recovery etc... Pre-season is the best opportunity they have to bulk up but they still need to be able to run.

It's funny with Rough, he seems to have done the opposite to every other bloke and is spending more time up field as he gets older. Same thing as Riewoldt and Richo but without the marking ability.

Rough is a much better inside player than those two, rather than playing as a pure athletic wingman

I agree there, a lot more coordinated. I just mean that he's doing the opposite by transitioning into a more physically demanding role as he gets older.

As well as Conor Nash we still have Mitchell Lewis and he has made good improvement this year! Also I like the idea of drafting our own talls instead of paying overs like we did Vickery!

Zanotti Files on Facebook reports that Schache moved his belongings by car back to Vic last weekend. Somehow linked to Hawks, along with Rocky.
Don't shoot me! I'm only the messenger! Can't see how we could do it, but it's on Facebook so it must be true!
I was mistaken about parents moving. They were in qld for an extended period rather than permanently moved.

After watching yesterday's game I'm all but convinced that a gorilla forward is far from necessary.
Unless they are a Locket/Dunstall type superstar almost every tall gets exposed at ground level in the high octane finals pressure.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

For as long as I can remember the team that has the best & longest pressure acts as well as contested ball winning will all but win just about every game.
It's a hard gameplan to implement for the entirety of a full season & finals, leaving a possession game as the backbone of this as longevity to sustain a season then turn into the contested beasts in finals.

Does a bail out kick to a tall help? Yes....
Should it be the gameplan going forward? I don't think so.

I was all for playing the extra tall for 2017 with the list we had & the expectation of Vickery paying off... the structure was similar anyway I guess, but 2018 should be staying away from the long bomb & consolidate on a midfield that should be able to win contested ball, have a consistent handle on the possession game that already exists & focus on a rebound & clearance game that translates to hitting up forward targets with fast ball movement.

Does that bring Gunston, Sicily, TOB back to being a more permanent forward role??? FIIK

I would like to see a return to the peak powers of the Rioli, Breust, Poppy combination ( not solely those 3 but a similar group ) with the likes of a Lovell, O'mera chipping in.

So for me.....

If someone like Shache fell into our lap to develop with the other young boys I would not be in favour of going after a "Big Forward".

Give me a group that can pound it into the forward 50 time & time again & have the guys to be able to keep it there with repeat efforts.

Richmond/Bulldogs went in small.

Adelaide/Sydney went in tall.

Yep I think we have the right mix of 190cm-194cm forwards that can run and jump at the footy whilst having the flexibility to play forward, back and even through the midfield.

After watching Jenkins stink it up, stay clear of 199cm forwards that can't ruck, total liability.

With this in mind should we trade Ceglar as we should not play two rucks.

Think the last few gf's shows we wont need a big fish key fwd to contend
I think it's been proven that if you can get everyone on the same page, you don't need to have too many A graders.....BUT.....whether this rule allows for sustained success is very questionable.

We see teams get themselves together, push to the end and succeed, but ultimately you need more top level talent and desire to repeatedly climb the mountain, and I think Clarkson knows this.

Richmond don't have the ideal forward structure honestly. If you want to see ideal forward structure, our threepeat years are the best example; two mobile talls, 3 creative high pressure smalls with hard running wings that can chip in when required.

Teams like Adelaide and GWS don't have the mobility required.

This is of huge concern to us going forward and the only decent one we have on our list is Roughead and he will be 31 by the time next season starts. The way I see it is we basically have 3 options, get a young talent like Schache this year, go all out for Tom Lynch in free agency in 12 months time or pray to god we get one with our 1st rounder in next year's supposed bumper draft.

What are other people's thoughts on the situation ? We are obviously short in midfield also but a Key forward is the other one of our pressing needs.

Option C: Pick the best available key forward in next years draft with our first round pick. I reckon we most likely miss the finals in 2018 so it will be a pick inside the top 10. It’s been almost 10 years since Hawthorn last took a key forward with it’s first round pick in the draft.

Thanks for the discussion Hodgeyroad but his big forward thread has been up a while.
Cheers fella.
Yes it is a worthy discussion topic.
Is a big key position spine as relevant today as it was when clarko started and stated that no team won grand finals without a big goal to goal line.

Sorry guys and girls will discuss in here from now on.

Trade, draft or target.
If we draft it would need to be this or nexts years as most talls take time and I don't want a kid coming good when the bird has flown.
Only target say a lynch if they nominate as bidding wars cost too much.
Would be happy with a consistent B or B plus tall ( who?) And surround him with A grade smalls, just needs to be consistent.
