Bigfooty Biography thread and General Reading Bonanza

This is inspired by the immense article that SLF posted in the other thread.

I am not a huge reader, but when i travel I tend to read alot to pass the time on the buses/trains/planes etc, I only really read biographies so I am looking for some to add to the buy list.

last trip i read

Marching Powder

Wolf of Wall Street

Russel Brand Autobio

Slash's autobiography with Anthony Bozza is pretty good.

Scar Tissue is good too.

Jason Gillespie's biography is an interesting read. I did some work experience for Lawrie Colliver, the author of the book. Good bloke- reckons there was plenty of stuff he couldn't put into the piece.

wolf of wall street is a must read (inb4 bunsen rant)

I also enjoyed "don't tell mum I work on the rigs" , It's a short book about the life of an offshore driller.

I'm not a huge biography reader, I find they all tend to get a bit repetitive in their structure and their content (especially sports ones). I enjoyed The Wolf of Wall Street though, and Anthony Kiedis's book was worth reading, even if you aren't a massive fan of the band.
Malcolm X's autobiography is brilliant and I highly recommend it, one of my favourite books of all time let alone just biographies.

Doubt this would appeal to many on here, but I'm a big fan of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, so I'm pretty keen to get stuck into Twain's autobiography which is just now being released.

Little bit off the track of biographies but This Boy's Life is a great memoir, fitting read for the age group that frequents this board.

Should open this up into a general reading thread I reckon, could be a good topic.

I just finished reading Nathan Buckley's Biography, was a good read.

Only boring chapter was when he was talking about the Lawyers doing there job when Norf was complaining he had already signed to join them but didn't want to go there. other than that I couldn't stop reading.

Scar tissue and Slash are awesome. My favourite is The Dirt by Motley Crue, they are four of the most ****ed up dudes on the planet. I've got Clapton's book to read as well the Sheedy one, Tommyland, Russell Brand and Led Zeppelin. Since I read so much boring shit thanks to uni, I don't really have the time to read the books I want to.

I never learnt to read :(

I'm halfway through reading Bucks book, probably will never finish it.
Yeah wtf was with that chapter, nobody cares about norf

George Orwell's Down and Out in London and Paris is somewhat auto-biographical, and one of my favourite books.

Did a critical commentary on this for a uni subject, was a good read.

The average GDer would enjoy Tucker Max's works.

I read a bit about that in Wayne Carey's book. He pretty much confirmed Buckley was a massive figjam. Then again, hard to tell whether Carey was being legit because he blatantly lies throughout most of the rest of the book. I suppose anyone interested in hearing Wayne Carey's "side of the story" would enjoy the book.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - autobiography/ memoirs of Jean-Dominique Bauby

it describes what his life is like after suffering a massive stroke that left him with a condition called locked-in syndrome. the entire book was written by him blinking his left eye using partner assisted scanning.

Long Walk To Freedom - Nelson Mandela (autobiography)
Never Say Die - Chris O'Brien (Brain Surgeon from The RPA in Sydney who featured on RPA)
Any Biography on Anne Frank

I can't believe how many biographies there are on soccer players

Thread is designed for AB Facey's A Fortunate Life. Easily the most brilliant autobiography I've ever read. Written by an illiterate at the turn of the century it chronicles his life in a simple, understated manner. Achieved plenty, had way more than his fairshare of heartache and hurt, but he summarises his life succinctly by calling it a fortunate one.

The ending is phenomenal. The only book I've ever cried while reading. It's a must. Bit better than simply reading about sportsmen or rockstars who load up on drugs and smash bishes.

Marching Powder would be one of my favourite books.

Give Angela's Ashes a go, it's another one of my faves. (I could post you the book if you're interested and if you dont consider that too creepy)

Currently:

Life by Keith Richards. Pretty good. Didn't keep banging on and on about how much drugs he did.

Epic Biogs:

This guy was on tour with the Stones in 69. This guy was with them day in down out. Epic:

The constant banging on about drugs wore thin at the end, but a very good read:

I wouldn't mind reading this:

I've also read books on the Beatles, Elton John, Bob Geldof. Even if I don't like the artist, doesn't mean it's not a good read. I'm drawing the line at Motley Crue though. They were so lame as a band no matter how much coke and hookers they did it will never compensate.

Steven Adler's book would be all drugs. Slash's was borderline, but according to him Adler was way worse off.

He was a massive junkie but started late. After AFD if i recall. I think he got off smack but went onto crack and had a stroke.

I read a GNR biog and it was pretty good albeit an untrusted source who i felt sourced a lot of rumours. Makes for a good read, but if you smell too much bullshit then it's not such a good read.

Adler did start late, but he's well and truly addled still today- struggles to even talk.

Was the one you read "Watch you bleed" by Stephen Davis? I read that one and it was ok, but as you said some are untrusted sources, not too sure where this one stands.

Would love a legitimate bio of Axl- would just be a piece of work to be able to document the absolute volatility of Axl's mind.

George Orwell's Down and Out in London and Paris is somewhat auto-biographical, and one of my favourite books.

Big ups for this. I'm pumping up Orwell's tyres in another thread. A singularly honest writer. Not an ounce of pretence about him, for mine.

Similarly awesome is "Homage to Catalonia", which details his experiences fighting in the Spanish Civil War.

Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History

a US senator who drank till he was stupid, did cocaine in hot tubs with strippers and playboy bunnies and orchestrated the US covert operations in Afghanistan during the cold war. dude was a baller

Shantaram - non-fictional?, armed robber who fled to India and lots happens, I hear Johhny Depp wants to play him in a movie adaptation

My Colombian Death - Sydney journalist heads to Colombia to experience South America, leaves pregnant wife behind

MP: Life of Michael Peterson - story of 70s surfer who was schizophrenic but was best in the world for a time, lots of drugs, girls and surfing

That's probably the stroke.

That's it. Was a good read, particularly what they did up until they made it big, but I just got the feeling he was filling in too many gaps. I did some diligence and a lot of people think it's vague at best.

I wouldn't be able to read it. He's just a total **** who tried to be Mick jagger. Firstly, why would you want to be an egotistical control frwak like Jagger, and second he's far too dumb to come even close to pulling off a Jagger. His IQ prolly on par with Kid Rock.
