Was he drafted as a midfielder though?, played most of his footy as a half forwardd with a bit of wing. Personally I never saw him as midfielder just not suited to the argy bargy contested stuff, more outside where he could use his sidestep and neat skills.
Still think forward of centre is where you get maximum return with Milera

Training 20/1/2025
Bit of a dry session today, not just in terms of the weather but also the training itself. Most of it was skills and positional work, which at this time of year doesn’t provide the same intrigue or excitement as match sim does.

If anything the most intense part was the fartlek-style running at the back end, which looked particularly gruelling especially in over 30 degree heat. Seemed to go for a fair while. Was a bit of a surprise given Mondays tend to be the lighter session, perhaps they were given a reprieve on Sat?

Pleasingly, today saw Cumming rejoin the group for a few drills before doing a power of running with Dan Jackson to finish off. He already looked in great condition at the start of pre season but he probably looks even better now after all the laps he’s been doing. Hopefully he gets involved in match sim later this week.

Murray and Pedlar were solely in the rehab group and did a bunch of running. Pedlar didn’t look hindered at all by the shoulder injury so hopefully he dodged a bullet there. Berry started off alongside them but quickly rejoined the main group and looked to be moving well, although he did cop a stray Dawson boot in the cherries.

I did notice that Peatling left the track rather early, but this reminded me a lot of Milera last week who it turned out was just being managed. There was no limp to be seen so I think he’ll be fine, just figured it was worth mentioning.

Drury and Madgen were nowhere to be seen. Strachan came out halfway through to help with the rucks.

In the second half of the session players were split into their positions, which I think is always interesting. They were as follows:

Backs: Edwards, Michalanney, Hinge, Ryan, Worrell, Nankervis, Laird, Milera, Smith, Borlase, Bond, Butts, Keane

Mids: Jones, Berry, Crouch, Curtin, Rachele, Dawson, Soligo, Rankine, Schoenberg, Dowling, Draper, Sholl, McAndrew, O’Brien

Forwards: Keays, Murphy, Thilthorpe, Walker, Cook, Welsh, Taylor, Burgess, Neal-Bullen, Fogarty, Gallagher, T. Murray

I did notice in an earlier drill Curtin and Rachele were listed as forwards and Edwards as a mid - as I’ve said previously, there’s been an emphasis on players training in multiple positions.

Cumming was also involved in that earlier drill and was listed as a midfielder. Taylor also joined the mids late in the session for stoppage work. At this stage it would seem he will only pinch-hit in there at most.

Truth be told there isn’t a heap to mention in terms of specific players but here’s a few comments:

Curtin - noticed in the stoppage drills he gave off a couple of rapid fire handballs above his head that I’d love to see him replicate in the real thing, at his height very few are going to be able to cut those off.

Thilthorpe - feels like he’s the only 200cm bloke on our list who looks like taking a pack mark at the moment. He’s judging them well - Rob and Ibis are far more scratchy at present.

Edwards - awkward action aside he really is a great kick both short and long, they just cut through the air. He just needs to get on his bike and get more of it, feels like he’s just cruising a lot out there.

Cook - he instantly looked better on the wing during match sim on Friday. Today he was back to the forwards and back to being almost anonymous again. He thrives in space and struggles a bit one on one, not the greatest combination for a deep forward.

Welsh - his boot isn’t far off Tex and Fog especially around goals. Getting his hands on it is another issue but gee he’s a lovely striker of the pill.

Hinge - after an interrupted start to pre season he’s looking like he’s back up to speed and running on top of the ground. Was too good for Curtin in the running who is no slouch.

Schoenberg - even in a lighter, more skills focussed session I thought Harry trained with a real intensity today. He’s not leaving a lot out there at the moment. He looked knackered in the running but kept up with some of the better runners. The power of a contract year.

Nankervis - I struggle to see how he doesn’t make our round one side. He’s a bit of an unknown still in AFL media circles but he’s regularly impressed this summer and looks more and more comfortable as that rebounding defender. If it’s between him and Milera, he gets the gig first up in my books. And that’s no slight on Junior who is training well, but Nank deserves first dibs.

Like to hear Schoenberg has been leaving no stone unturned. Critical year for his footy career, and it sounds like he's not gonna let it go without a fight.

Bodes well for him

Interesting that you are happy for him to play if he is fit. Last I remember in 2024 you wanted him gone.

And this is 4 years after you wanted him to retire in 2020

Now you want him in the best 22 as long as he is properly fit?

In his defence, Walker does at times look very old and has done so for a while. Forutunately, his skills cover it pretty well

Not to mention Tex himself said that if not for being contracted for 2021, end of 2020 would have been an interesting conversation. Bit of an uncomfortable truth for old AFC.

Thanks Bigman, awesome work as usual mate. Can I just ask about Josh Worrell’s pre season? He seems to always go under the radar with all of us supporters tbh, and I’m really not sure why. He’s got all the tools to be a jet but just never seems to stand out. Can you see him taking that next step if he stays fit?

Pick 11 ??

I would have thought so yeah. It wasnt a super draft for midfielders. Gresham was taken just after him, Dunkley in the 20s after Sydney didnt match a bid which in hindsight wouldnt have served us well, and a guy called Ben Keays just before him. If he turned out to be a gun HBF like he could have been, thats acceptable.

Sadly his body hasnt't allowed him to reach the heights he could have.

We pulled the "young local star" lever which is completely understandable.
There was plenty of talent in that draft and I doubt they would have taken him if they had known where he would end up playing. Recruiters don't usually go for those type of players at pick 11.

Just look the recent history of pick 11.

2015: Milera (Mid/Forward)
2016: Florent (Mid/Forward)
2017: Bonar (Mid/Forward)
2018: Caldwell (Mid)
2019: Flanders (Mid/Forward)
2020: Pedlar (Mid/Forward)
2021: Wanganeen-Milera (Mid)
2022: O'Hollands (Mid)
2023: O'Sullivan (KPD)
2024: Lindsay (Mid)

The "young local star" stuff is just club apologism. That they were inaccurate and cowardly in their drafting doesn't make it better.

Agree - Nank gets first crack before Junior

1 Nank is the incumbent on that role - it’s up to Jumior to displace Nank

2. Junior has a history of a slow build after a long term injury - let’s give him time in the sanfl to rebuild form, confidence and match fitness

You're comparing P11 from different drafts and it's pretty irrelevant.

You get the pick of the players in that draft, no more, and most of those players didn't end up as gun midfielders either.

Of those you've mentioned, less than half will end up as the midfielders you are trying to pass them off as.

In your desperation to blame the recruiting group you've actually stuffed your argument

I'm not rating those players. I'm pointing out the simple case of supply/demand that you seem to be ignoring. There is a noticeable pattern of recruiters favouring certain types of players at the pointy end.

The argument that you can only compare it to 2015 doesn't work either. You really want to look at the talent we passed over from the 2015 draft, a list that includes Charlie Curnow and Jordan Dawson? I mean you wouldn't even need to place the bar so high. There are plenty of what I would call B Graders on that list that have had better careers than Milera.

This is part of his problem. He is not interested in exploring any position other than half back. Milera first, not team first. We won't trade him but would happily dump him for a 3rd.
We tried it, it failed.

I'll be honest, I thought it would be his spot too but alas it wasn't

thanks BM - your reports are always a highlight when compare to the endless back and forward between some of the knobs on this blog. How is schoey looking in the weight department? He has always looked a bit podgy

Charlie Cameron was the 2013 draft.

Jordan Dawson spent 6 years as a half back/wing before he forced himself into the midfield.

And again, we don't know what he'd have become if he stayed fit. In no sane universe is this a recruiting issue.

Was a typo. I meant Curnow.

Jordan Dawson worked his way up, Milera was the exact opposite and was played at half back because he failed at everything else. I don't see what that has to do with anything though. You were trying to argue that the Milera pick was okay because the draft was light on for talent. This is some bullshit you just made up.

Bad recruiting is a recruiting issue.

I agree, that period from 15 to 18, and obviously McAsey was a disaster save for a few pick here and there.

Picking the best local talent with X factor who juat came off a pretty solid SANFL Finals series is a sound strategy, him getting injured doesn't change that.

Wanganeen-Milera and Ollie Hollands bith played predominantly on the wing and some half back before they were drafted, Wayne Milera predominantly played half forwardand some wing.......if you want to be pedantic at the best you'd call them outside midfielders and they still are...one omly needs to look at their clearance numbers.

What? We don't know that.

I expect he'd do whatever the coach asked.
