I am excited to have a 200cm defender/forward we can use. Roughhead was a huge loss. A fit Roughy for 2022 sees us win the flag! He was the missing piece in our quest. He could play tall or on midsized forwards as he was very mobile and athletic. Blast his weak shoulder.

and Inside Mids that could win a Clarence

I’m 😹 at the melts over a 3 year deal by posters who have probably not watched him play this year as a defender… let alone study his potential like the pies coaching team has

3 years for a bloke who can play defence or ruck is fine by me…

In case no one noticed… we let go of one of our ruckman today 🙄

How much time have they put into observing him?

Roughy was under-rated, did a fine job for us

He's got the tools. Just a matter of if the coaches can get him to finally reach his potential. This is his last shot.
Ripper kid , ton of ability - just needs to dial in consistency and narrow the gap between his best and worst.
He's a good mate of Darcy Cameron so hopefully he will settle in early and get to work.

Are they both from WA? Thanks for your contribution.

The SEN linked article mentions that he has been talking to the club since early on in the year.

He was a role player, recent history suggests you need your tall defenders to be taking plenty of intercept marks and providing rebound, not just being a lockdown defender, to win the flag.

Agree.

We have one of the best intercept marking, rebound defenders in the comp (Moore) who wasn't able to do this because we were 1 tall defender short. Howe was also found to be undersized too often.

Billy is a good get.

That’s gotta be rubbish. Only Geelong makes long term plans to recruit players. Other teams just fight over the scraps when trade week starts🤣🤣🤣🤣

i'm not too sure about all these references to "rolling off". Does that mean head for the wide open spaces looking for easy ball. He'll need to be instructed in how to tackle as he's only done 16 in his career so far. From that article it seems that he's a bit of a gusher... he's certainly free with the information

You make too many assumptions about what others may or may not have done methinks.

p.s. If he plays ruck to any even semi-competent degree for us it's the first time he'll have done so in his AFL career.

I too experienced shock and disbelief.

The link checks out and there are no reports that SEN has been hacked. This might seem beyond the realm of possibility but it could very well be true.

To the coaches? I don't doubt that GW and Hines have been chatting to his management. But that's a bit different to the coaches spending time watching him play.

They probably ask everyone's opinion, but I wouldnt think Hine would have any actual role at looking and evaluating his play. He's in the system....he's been in the system for a number of years. I dont see why hine would be involved directly.

The article doesn't say, I agree it is unlikely that coaches would travel to watch him; it's not their job.

The wonders of 21st century technology would allow the coaches to watch him play from the comfort of the meeting room in all the splendor of 4K.

I think identifying the skills that players have is one of the easier parts of football. Coaches get their money by creating an effective team. Frampton has played 20 odd games. He's been road tested. He's demonstrated whether he can kick under pressure, whether he can mark the ball. How fast he runs etc etc. The question is whether someone can get him to do it more consistently...whether he is going to keep trying when others have given up. You dont see that in a video.

I'd argue otherwise in our specific 2022 case

Pretty hard to argue that having Roughead this season (or even Dean) wouldn't have got us over the line against:

  • Geelong twice
  • Richmond
  • Sydney twice
  • West Coast

In all 6 of those losses, the lack of a second tall defender is what ultimately cost us the game (alongside some other stuff). You simply can't have Howe, Murphy or Madgen playing as key defenders on genuine key forwards. You simply can't and think you're gonna get away with it

Yep. Any player already on a senior list is more of a known quantity. As you say, their basic attributes have already been put on display.

Where it gets tricky is trying to ascertain if they have upside e.g. the anvil or if what you've seen is all you're ever going to get.

A visit to the ground might not get you that level of knowledge either. You'd have to talk to the player and get a better understanding of their potential to further develop. A video or even a visit to the ground won't uncover any problems/opportunities e.g. disconnect between the player and the coaching staff etc.
