As has been said before Blackwell and Bentick could be challenging eachother for spots in the starting 18 in the next few years. My question is who would you prefer and who do you think will be better? As someone said on another post we probably really need a good extractor in the middle rather than too many outside players. Which of these 2 do you think are better at getting the hard ball and feeding it out of the packs. I was really impressed with Blackwell yesterday.

Hmm hard one... Bentick is a much harder player and with a bit of pace could teag well, atm imo only could tag the slower midfielders e.g holland licuria. Blackwell is a more polished player but he'll be better with weight

Blackwell for me too. He has superior vision and skills and already has som,e hardness. For what it is worth though Bentick did show a bit towards the end but if it was a choice Blackwell clearly.

The commentators said he got most of his possessions after the game was dead. I think Blackwell has better skills and running ability than Bentick, but Bentick is better at the drop of the ball - which is where we're sadly lacking at the moment. Sadly, Bentick will never be Sam Mitchell, and that's who we really need.

One thing you will get with AB is 110% effort all day long, a few others should take note of his hunger to play well.

Blackwell is easily the pick of the two.

Bentick not up to AFL level. Can't hit a target, turns over the ball far too often and doesn't get the ball out of congested situations which is his role. Throw in the fact that he is too slow - will be surprised if he survives the end of season clean up.

They both can do a job for us:) I doubt we need to chose one or the other as with rotations a starting eighteen is only a whiteboard construct to amuse those betting on the game:D As other people have already stated Blackwell will get much better at the hard ball gets as his body matures and Bentick probably didn't improve as much as some of our other younger players did this season, but he showed enough towards the end of last year to indicate that he can play:)

Disagree with everthing you said. Bentick is a reasonable kick on his preferred, and his handballing skills are some of the best at our club. Although he's not particularly quick off the mark, it has no impact on his style of play. He's usually on his hands and knees anyway, but regardless he still finds the ball. He also has what you would call a good footy brain.

His limitations at the moment are his one-side foot skills, and perhaps his endurance or energy levels (still can't play 4 quarters). His endeavour is great though.

Personally I don't think either player is that similar. Blackwell is a clearance player whilst Bentick is in-and-under. Both players will need to step up next season though. They won't be able to keep Murphy and Gibbs out of the side for long.

Couldnt agree more with that statement:thumbsu:

Both will probably have a spot in the 22 for the next couple of years, however after that I reckon one will become a back-up player. Blackwell to me seems to be the better of the two, and unless Bentick improves some of his weaker aspects, I doubt he'll be in the starting 22 in 2-3 years time, but a solid back-up player, who will get games if someone's injured or out of form.

I really rate Blackwell and think he'll become a very good player. How many Carlton supporters feel he's in their best 18? Also does anyone know how his pre-season has been to date. Cheers guys.

He is definitely in our best 22, and pushing for the best 18, if he isn't already there.

A lot of people tend to overlook him because they concentrate on Walker, Simpson, Murphy and probably Gibbs, but I rate Blackwell very highly, and I think a lot of people tend to underestimate his worth to the team. Will be a very good player long-term for the Blues.

Not sure exactly how he has been going in the preseason as I haven't headed down to training as of yet. I would hope he has been spending a lot of time in the gym, as he is still very slight.

As for the question in this thread-both are important members of the team ATM. I think Bentick has the runs on the board at the moment, but Blackwell will overtake him in the future. Both players will be a part of the Carlton Football Club for a long while.

I love AB's work ethic, he really gives his all and was probably thrown in the deep end a bit. I think he will continue to improve this year with the addition of other midfielders (if he can keep his spot), and he fills a void in our team as an in and under mid.

On pure skills however, I'd probably leen toward Blackwell.

Both. They are different players.

Bentick is a more physical, tagger type player, wheras Blackwell I see as a crumber/light midfielder.

I would be disappointed to see Bentick leave, as i think we need hard, physical players in our team with biggish bodies. He is solid and gets his job done. Not classy, but just solid.

They're both young, it's not like they're in their later 20's, therefore, I can't see us in a hurry to get rid of either of them.

I agree that they are both different types of players, however I believe they will both be competeing for the one spot in the team.

1. Bentick - severly lacking in pace and this will become more an more evident with the recruiting of athletic type players. Footskills are ok, he's tough (holds the bench-press record at the club), quite 1 dimensional as he can only play one position, great at stoppages with his hands, but unfortunatley does not seem to have a future in tomorrows game.

2. Blackwell - More polished skills, lighter frame but doesn't mind putting it on the line. Capable of playing in the middle and on a HFF or forward pocket. I expect him to improve over the next two years and edge Bentick out of the side.

Blackwell for me.

Think Blackwell has a bit more class about him...but Bentick is more important to the team at the moment and will be for next year at least. Not sure what other nuggetty in and under types are coming through. With Kouta probably playing forward next year, I think getting a solid bodied, ball winner is something we need to address in the PSD or rookie drafts.
