Lions believe Port Adelaide is in box seat for Ryder

Port Adelaide's late charge to convince Paddy Ryder to switch allegiance to the Power came as the 26-year-old and his family held talks in Brisbane late on Tuesday with Lions coach Justin Leppitsch and his football boss Dean Warren.

As Ryder's manager Paul Connors delayed a decision on Ryder's future after a Tuesday meeting with Essendon's CEO Xavier Campbell, it emerged that the player had elected to fly to Brisbane to meet Leppitsch before the Lions coach headed away on annual leave on Wednesday.

The talks between Connors and Campbell broke up with both parties agreeing to meet again next week. Both parties have cautiously agreed to a cooling-off period with the prevailing view that Ryder will leave.

The Lions now believe they have been overtaken by Port in the bid to secure Ryder, although Port, which takes on Hawthorn this Saturday in the preliminary final at the MCG,will make no firm offer to the player until its season has completed. Any player contract offer exceeding $300,000 annually or three years in term must be put before the club's board.

Mitch Brown
George Burbury
Taylor Hunt
Jordan Schroder
Jesse Stringer

Herald Sun reporting those 5 plus Josh Cowan are all in line to be cut by the Cats. I know plenty have spoken about recruiting Hunt, but does anyone else grab peoples interest.

I tend to agree. I think the idea with Lids is that he should be a forward but then when required he should be the loose in defence. Instead of having chaplin guard space have lids who has better speed, skills and marking ability roam the half back line mopping up then running it out when needed.

Looking at it the main problem with Lids is that the top coaches figured him out quickly at half back. Lyon just put Crowley to him. Mick made him play on Gibbs and others just followed the trend.

Well he did make AA at half back didn't he? Then he moved into the midfield so I'd argue he wasn't that well figured out. He struggled with tags in the midfield mainly....

He's definitely super effective as a high half forward who works all the way up to half back and basically blows up his opponents, then rotates through the mids as well. I honestly don't mind Chappy being the loose man.... his biggest problem is he tries to be the loose when he actually meant to be tightly checking his opponent. Chappy can only play the loose role if Astbury and Rance are minding the 2 big forwards. Grimes/Batch can take the 3rd or if it's a tall 3rd forward, one of them can be the loose while Chappy mans up.

Either way, we need another 3rd tall backman... only Elton in the wings, so a Jaksch or drafted tall would be good.

In the next year, 2 or 3, we need to replace/upgrade: Newy, Chaplin, Morris (unless his brain farts go when his shoulder gets fixed), Grigg, Petterd (doing not much wrong but just not the skills to deliver under pressure), Foley and we need a small crumbing forward. These spots would fix our best 22 while the others would provide decent depth.

AA midfielder. Absolutely stiff not to get on HBF in 2010 and 2011.

It sucks cos next year when he gets named AA HF it would be hard not to suggest the most versatile player in the game,

Vickery kicked 23 goals, not bad from limited games. Technically he is a pretty good kick.
I'd like to see the breakdown of his goals, ie from marks as opposed to hanging out the back and getting an easy handball into the square for a shot.

I don't care if he gets them like that. We seem to work so hard for our goals so a couple of cheapies are awesome. You still have to be smart enough to get into position for cheapies

I feel the need, the need for SPEED. Blair find me someone lightning quick that can play footy, he'll find me two of them
Sam Blease if delisted by the Dees would be the type we need.
Watched him a bit in his final year at u18 level and he was a well skilled line breaker. Honestly don't know what the hell Dees have done to him!!! Would take him as a delisted free agent on a one year deal

First deal done.

2 goals a game is a good return for a second tall, thats where Griff as good as his season was needs to improve, at just 0.8 goals per game and 4 extra games than Vick its not good enough.
