If AFL were strict then your hope and wishes would end in tears. Since when would the AFL help us? More likely they block the deal.

If Geelong Mafia (Whateley and Chris Scott) complained then the AFL via Steve Hocking would suddenly enforce the rule.

Again, a safe AFL non-blockable deal must involve a 2nd round pick.

The above deal is not within AFL guidelines.

The AFL guidelines which are, conveniently, not published anywhere. The AFL rules refer to a "Determination for the Trading of Future Draft Selections" document. Said document is not available - precisely because the AFL want to be able to interpret and amend to their hearts' content as individual situations arise/.

The AFL initially ruled that if a club traded any future pick other than their first rounder (ie. their second round pick), that they couldn't trade their first rounder. They then backtracked and said that if a club traded their future second round pick, they could still trade their future first round pick if they traded in another future second round pick to replace the one they traded out. This makes sense. If a club upgraded their future first rounder, why on earth would you prevent them from trading any other future picks. The "rule" is in place to prevent clubs from trading away their entire draft hand 12 months in advance. Presumably they want clubs using the draft, instead of trading away 10 picks in a single year to pry established players away from developing clubs.

Logically (a scary word to use with the AFL), the same applies in reverse. If a club can trade in a future first round pick to replace their own first round pick, they should be free to trade other future picks. If sequencing is an issue, and we need to trade in a future first before trading out our future first - that's easily done. 1 for 3 and Brisbane's future first. Then our future first for Pick 6. Done. AFL "guidelines" satisfied.

And again, as I said, the way to broach it is not for us to ask permission from the AFL. It's for us to give GC the green light, but tell them the AFL guidelines may prevent us doing the deal. As such, if they want Pick 1, they need to convince the AFL to allow the trade to go through in the interests of the Gold Coast Suns. Let them make a case to AFL house about how Sam Walsh and an additional top 5 pick next year are going to help them set up a platform for success.

The point was SOS is the man

He can't be responsible for Ahern doing 2 ACLs nor can he be responsible for GWS trading him for pick 69

What he can objectively be responsible far is the bet value of Jaksch and 19 (boek) vs Ahern

Ahern played really well in his first real season of AFL after doing 2xACLs

Jaksch and Boek and nowhere

So SOS had pick a kid who is outperforming those 2 despite doing 2 knees
It's weird you even have to explain this.

Well SOS did recruit Bugg originally.

Does he count as a GWS pick up if the Dees were in between?
Not sure - he was drafted as an underage recruit to GWS in 2010...I think SOS may have still been with the Aints, could be wrong though.

He's actually a pretty handy footballer.....wasn't quite the same though after that hit on Callum Mills.....rumours are that he fell out of favour with the club after that incident, and had to prove himself to the group to gain trust. Only played 3 senior games this year which kind of suggests he needs a fresh start.

Wouldn't be the worse pick up....posters over at the Dawks forum a while back already had him signed, sealed and delivered :drunk:
