Everybody is after GWS kids, and anyone who believes that they'll come cheap is kidding themselves. They're overpriced to the max and GWS aren't exactly filling me with confidence with their ability to develop youngsters.

Look at the trading cost of Boyd and Jaksch if you want proof. If you add the Griffin money they're throwing at GWS to Boyd's contract the guy would have to be the most expensive player to ever play the game. He'll be paid more than buddy.

Jaksch is a mid first round pick from a very compromised draft who has spent most of the last two years struggling in the weakest AFL reserves comp in the country. Getting him took us out of the top 10.

Why you would want an overpriced GWS mid ahead of Dangerfield? I really don't understand the thinking involved.

Premature to call out on the Jaksch trade, but getting pick 19 back plus a bargain in Whiley at the very least its break even right now (everyone criticised Paul Roos for giving up pick 2 for Dom Tyson and the pick that netted Salem, but it now looks like the best piece of business the Dees have done in years)

The club was right to pull the trigger on the Jaksch deal, all the picks from the 8 - 20 range were rated fairly evenly)

And salary cap space aside, The Dogs got a damn good deal for Tom Boyd really.

Generally I think your right about Dangerfield over Treloar and Shiels, I just feel we aren't in a realistic position to get him. Very happy to be proven wrong.

Consider the market place.
What club is going to have the where-with-all to chase big dollar targets?

Hawthorn.....unlikely barring high profile retirement.
Sydney.........no way they have cap
Bulldogs.......Boyd has all of their coin for a decade (may be some gettable disgruntled targets)
Fremantle.....not a destination of choice (need to retain their own)
West Coast...see Freo, and NicNat has a huge slice of the pie.
Adelaide.......Aish is their next target, trying to keep Sloane and Danger
Port.............Aish is their next target, keeping Wines etc, and Ryder has a decent piece of pie.
Brisbane.......War chest bare thanks to Beams and Christensen
Richmond......player, but need to retain Rance and co. May not have cap for top end.
Collingwood...player, Swan's future may decide to what level.
GWS.............retaining is their issue.
GCS..............retaining is their issue, no $ for top end of market
Geelong.........Danger would be their focus, but Selwood on record, won't sell the farm
North Melb.....Waite, Higgins, Dal Santo etc. taken a huge chunk. Maybe Petrie, Boomer could free some up.
Essendon.......wtf is going on with their case? Goddard and Cooney have a big chunk. Can't see big players.
Melbourne......players, likely higher picks, but unlikely to have and trade bait available.
St Kilda..........players....see Melbourne.

So the likes of Treloar or Shiel coming home, choose Carlton, St Kilda, Melbourne, Collingwood or maybe Richmond.
Treloar from mad Blues family...cant see Magpies on radar. GWS won't allow PSD scenario, looking more gettable?:)

It's premature to describe the past?

I'm hopeful that the trade will work in our favour, but that's doesn't change where Jaksch was drafted, or his performances in the NEAFL.

Where do we sign?

part of Cooneys contract is being paid by the dogs. plus essendon lost 550K ish of ryders money. They have cap space but do players want to go to that particular club?

If they players get off this year and they have a decent year they will be able to lure someone with that cash.
Heppell's new deal would not have come cheap, Daniher must be due a new contract and that big oaf that walker took a screamer over is out of contract so that will eat up some of the $$$

Appreciate the effort involved in making your list but with Sydney signing Tippett and Franklin in consecutive years after winning the premiership I don't think anyone would have any idea who has salary cap room

Tbh I'd save the cash/front-load contracts while we have a developing side, in order to give us a bit of wiggle room when we're actually in contention for a flag.
Obvious exception would be if there was some ridiculous offer on the table.

You need the right people around you in order to develop the young guys but even at this somewhat early stage the leadership potential is looking very promising through the likes of Cripps, Menzel, Buckley, Graham etc.

I understand the strategy of getting the right types (player, character & age profiles) that have been in the system for a couple of years and I just can't see that not continuing. We've brought in, Docherty, Jaksch, Whiley, Dick, Jones, Tutt and Boekhorst whilst still drafting a dozen kids over the past two years.

Interesting that Trigg, whilst not ruling out a play for Dangerfield, did strongly signal our intent to adhere to our recent draft/recruit policy.

Very fair point. :thumbsu:

are they becoming like St Kilda of the 1980's?
After the crap that happened with Campo and the recent supplements scandal at Essendon*... I dont think that any of the Carlton boys will be wanting to go there when they reach that time of their career where they are looking for that one last big pay cheque... Even Waite, who is an Essendon supporter, didnt want to go there!

I have high hopes of snagging one of Shiel or Treloar (dreaming if anyone thinks we could get both). Both passionate Carlton supporters growing up (who interestingly share the same birthday), surely our club would be given due consideration - IF they request a trade home. Another 4-win season by the Giants and our chances go up. If they manage 8+ wins, however, I suspect the lure of being a FOUNDATION PLAYER for a club that's just shown the footy world it is on the brink of success will be too tempting.

How much do you think the club would be willing to pay for one of these two gems?

The giants will win 8 this year. And if one did want to leave, we would hope that they choose us and we get it done for our first. If they don't choose us, then I believe we just continue to go to the draft well.

8 is a very specific number

Good rumour JustaBattler and one that wouldn't surprise at all.
I hope that the CFC have their eyes open and ear to the ground at all times.

For all we know, Mick may well be happy to walk away, after setting things up.
I've had that impression of him for some time now although that may well be wrong.

I must be getting old - because my first personal reaction to change is always - negative!!

Of all the people I would want to come to the club......Ross Lyon is very low on that list.

Had several teams in their prime, who havent been good enough. Ross Lyon burns teams by loading up on old guys and completely ignoring the growth/future. Even if he snags a flag....he wont create a dynasty.

Interesting! I'm quite close with one of Lyon's besties, but she's on holidays...is it super poor friend form to call her up and demand that she tells me everything she knows?

On behalf of the board, I say it's super poor friend form NOT TO...
