That line is said ad nauseum on here, but he's had his fair share of gains in a team that has gone backwards from 5th in 2011 to bottom of the ladder now. If you say this blame rests entirely on the forward/defensive assistant coach, then he should be the one getting the sack....not Mick.

They should sack the lot of them. There is more chance of only a small change if we hire internally

Everything he's ever touched has gone backwards.

slashin_velvet, you make some very valid arguments. But Paulski's statement is irrefutable.

He was in charge of the forward line, then the backline. Have you watched them play? Most of the time when they have the ball they go backwards ;):p

Anyone else think it's strange Clarko chimed in on the weekend regaining our predicament? Very rare a coach will discuss another clubs doings unless he knows more to it.

Im wondering if the Hawks don't go as well this year, the blues will throw a lot of cash at him. Which the love to do...

what did he say?

Meh. Wouldn't have a clue about Barker. I didn't have a clue about Phil Walsh or Luke Beveridge either...

I'm sold #getbarker.
I am the same, and I probably don't have any other reason to doubt his ability to coach or develop players other than the fact that I didn't really rate him as a footballer during his playing days.

Probably not justified in this thought process or opinion but I suspect most Carlton fans have a similar thought pattern, don't have to be a good player to be a good coach or teacher of the game but can't get these thoughts out of my head at the moment.

Happy to leave it up to those closer to the inner sanctum to decide what's best for the club going forward.

Interesting to note that it's generally the average players that become good coaches.

I mean - Lyon was pretty meh. Clarko too. Longmire too. etc etc

VS. Vossy, Hird, Ratten, Buckley etc.

Leigh Matthews went ok, as did Roo's, Barassi, Walls etc.

How do we know how good Longmire really is ??

Has only ever had a high quality list with great advantages from COLA to continually top up their team with great talent.

true. was just trying to understand why people don't rate barker simply because of his playing ability. playing ability doesn't make a coach.

Agree, and wasn't having a shot at you lachie was just airing my thoughts as my thinking about Barker is clouded because he wasn't a great player which is not right I know but cant help the way I am thinking about him.

As I said I am happy for those closer to the action to make the call and I will sit back and bag them on here if they **** it up.....:p:thumbsu:

You obvious didn't watch Longmire play, he was a champion for North Melbourne, won the Coleman medal when he was 19 (kicked 98 goals that year)

I don't agree with the argument that champion players don't make champion coaches, Bomber Thompson was a very, very good player for Essendon (for example)

I didn't say champions don't make good coaches. I said 'generally average players become good coaches'.

This "I don't rate Barker because he couldn't play" mentality just doesn't add up.

Malthouse - Average
Matthews - GOAT

I always felt this is an unfair statement.

They might be millionaires but they don't play like it. Great culture up there. GCS got all the concessions in the world and have a troubling culture & play bruise free footy.

There's more aspects to becoming a successful footy club than having a few extra $$$.

Longmire is a premiership coach, they're not that easy to win.

As for crediting the coach... how many people do you know are going to stand up on live TV and credit the previous coach for them getting where they are now? Even if you think that the current coach is a fool, you are going to credit them with doing some good work with you even if you think the opposite.

Not all the failings are Barkers fault... however, in his tenure at the club, things havent improved in a measurable significant manner and that can be laid at his feet.
Its getting to a point of stalemate for mine. In all of the cases I quoted, the players didnt have to reference Barker at all, yet they did. They referred to both the head coach and barker or their playing mentor and barker. In all those circumstances, they didnt need to add him yet they did.

Whilst I dont disagree with your last statement, I dont think the failings under him are directly his fault, and I dont think the club has supplied ample youth to test his development (particularly where the defense is concerned). The fact that the post you quoted referenced almost every young player in defense....and all are somewhat "mature aged" shows how our club has approached list management in defense of late.

My reference to continual issues with Giles was that he was in a moonboot from the middle of 2014 and was expected to get out at the start of preseason, but had a setback and required further surgery in November. To me that is continuous.

Anyway, for mine, he's not the end of the world as a caretaker coach. He may surprise us, or prove that he's not good enough.....either way, I dont see what we have to lose.

Think you may have missed my point, Longmire walked into a team with an established list & great culture, extra money, extra academy selections etc and has maintained the the high success rate that was already there before he took over.

The comparison with the GCS is unbalanced as they have not yet created a good list or culture and haven't had their young talent peak yet.

Agree that premierships are not easy to win but if I was starting out as a young coach than I can assure you I would want the things the Swans already have in place ahead of a team still finding their way like the GC.
