I'll get shot down in flames for it, but I would've prefered Bevo and Wood to lift the cup as captain and coach first, then after all the boys ran up on stage Bob could've taken Bevos spot. Even then I wouldn't have been fussed if Bob didn't get involved, its unfortunate he wasnt able to be part of the premiership team, but plenty before him have missed out and plenty after him will too. I love the club as much as the next person, been a member since i was 12, social club member since I was 18 (now 30), went to Hawks, GWS and the GF but IMO I thought he could've taken a back seat a little more.
Your scenario makes sense in that regard if it was an orchestrated event. Since it was a spontaneous event, however, it was a more natural, organic event instead. I get what you're saying though, it would have been nice.

That said, there's a photo out there somewhere of Bevo sitting on a step with the cup perched on the floor and against his hand, just him and the cup all by themselves (and the photographer, of course). I'm content Bevo will have his own moments that mean more to him than the traditional ones--our coach doesn't strike me as a 'traditional' sort in what matters to him.

(now I'm imagining Bevo with the cup perched on his skateboard while riding it, or better yet, his surfboard!)

We've won our first flag in 62 years and there will not be a photo of the premiership captain and coach holding the cup on stage after its been presented. For some reason, it doesnt really sit that well with me. Let Bevo and Wood hold the cup, then they could've got Bob involved after that

I dont even go for Australia in the cricket (long story) but do you know what I think of when I recall the aussies finally winning the frank Worrell trophy - the most important moment in australia's modern cricket history? It isn't Mark Taylor or Bob Simpson accepting an award.

It is David Boon already 4 cans deep standing on a table in the dressing room singing Beneath The Southern Cross.

Why rely on a staged, dime a dozen, every-team-in-history-has-done-the-same-thing image to remember such an occasion. Why not remember it for a spontaneous act of humanity and friendship.

.
You be happy for Stokes and Harley to hold the cup instead of Bomber and Harley in 2009 or Moons and Ling instead of Scott and Ling in 2011?
I personally wouldve liked the to see Bevo and Wood hold the cup, given they are premiership captain and coach.

So a question to dogs fans..just for the sake of research..have you come across any fellow WB supporters in the last 72 hours who were genuinely disappointed that the coach didn't get to hold up the cup with the premiership game day captain?

Or is it just a plain and simple case that we non dogs have know idea how much bob is revered and loved at bulldog land?

For a true understanding of the Dogs, it's worth Googling "The Tragician", a Dogs supporting blogger who has been there for a fair bit of the journey. When you read it, all becomes clear.

Regardless of what anyone else says/thinks/does, we are Bulldogs. Simple as that.

Actually, without being born into the Dogs family, or linking up at an early age, it may never be really possible to grasp the reality that is the Dogs.

spontaneous and organic.. You reckon?

You sure about that?
I trust Bevo's statement on the matter. He said it was spontaneous, so it was. The man's not given me a reason yet to distrust him. If that changes, I'll re-evaluate. I don't expect it will.

ETA to above poster: same answer.

Barassi wouldn't ever let Sam Kekovich be superimposed in the 75 winning grand final photo as he was out getting a root when the photo was being taken.

After days of careful analysis we now know these key points.

#it looks like only 1% of dogs fans wish it was bevo instead of bob holding the cup up with Easten and would've preferred bob stepping down off stage ( or maybe clapping to the side)

# 99% of dogs fans think it was the most doggiest of all doggiest moment in the history of the club to witness bob holding the cup up with Easten. For some it was the fairytale ending after a rainbows and unicorns type of grand final match.

#the team photo with bob in background head hung low is eerie.

More developements as they come to hand.

Fair enough. For myself, it seems more true to our club's nature that we are often against the tide, not with it. But I for one won't shoot you down in flames for what you would have preferred. FWIW, I'm reasonably confident we'll get another crack at it with Bevo.

Cuts me to the quick, that one. ;) I'm 40-something, but only been a Bulldog since 2009 when I first came to Australia. My wife's Aussie born and bred and was born into a Dogs family, so can I get it through association? :D

I will have a look a blog for sure.

I've read all the posts on the gf thread on dogs wall. Some amazing stories there that every footy loving poster on the this site should read.

I've got about a dozen very close reletives and friends who are dogs fans. I've got a pretty good idea of the Footscray-Dogs type of supporter going back to a kid in late 70s.

But you can never quite grasp the true reality of being a bulldog.
Much like tiger fans, it's a different kind of barracking and following in a footy club.

I've watched the game 6 times now.
It is truly one of the great team performances in gf history.

The rolling Boyd goal and dozens of other moments in that last qrt is the stuff of boyhood dreams.

On a selfish note, the game reminds of 93' when we had a bunch of kids who ran all day like maniacs and attacked at every opportunity beating a more finals experienced team.

It's not just the gf you've got too.
Three other finals which are all mini grand finals in them selves.

Enough to keep dogs fans happy for years to come no matter what happens.

Ha ha ha

Daksian, because you became a Dogsman on arrival, you're one of us.

Same thing as being born to it - you got here, you jumped in.

Great work! :thumbsu:

Stokes is an irrelevance because there is simply no level on which you can compare him to Murphy. Mooney was already a 3 time premiership player when he missed in 2011. So even that doesn't count, though I would have absolutely no problem if he was acknowledged somehow given how much of a leader he was without actually having a title.

A far better analogy would be to simply ask if I'd have been happy for Harley to share the cup with King or Chapman or whoever would have taken over as captain if he missed most of 2007 including the grand final.

And yes I would.

The enduring memory and image I have of that day is Billy Brownless crying and hugging everyone around him. A man who didn't play in the flag but who is a spiritual figurehead of the club getting his face on camera. And I still love it.

"Spiritual figurehead"?

Some of you spend too much time absorbing media melodrama.

Melodrama? It's code word for 'a guy who doesn't hold an official position within the club but is loved and respected by everyone who is attached to the club." Would you prefer me to just write that whole paragraph each time or use an adjectival cliche for the sake of convenience?

I'd prefer you spared us from the use of sappy cliches (melodrama) altogether.

We get enough of that from the media (which I think was the point of this thread).
