Apparently these are competing for a spot on the first test. With Siddle said to be favoured by Ponting.

I'd have to think that this is ridiculous. Siddle has done anything noteworthy over the past year. Over-rated player for me.
 
<shrug> when have we picked the best test team?

We carried brett lee for 200 out of his 300 test wickets, we carried mark waugh because he was a great slips fielder and good for a 100 when we were 3/300 but had a pea heart under pressure, and we carried hauritz through his entire career?

Bollinger is marginally better than siddle statistically but neither are particularly great bowlers, and neither will be in the team in 3 years time.
 
Based on the last 12 months surely bollinger would be the first quick picked?

if they really think siddle deserves a shot why wouldn't johnson by the one to go?

Not that i really get the siddle hype that's suddenly sprung up, the bloke is a trier sure but he was also a pretty ordinary test bowler with 3 wickets a game at 32.


Bollinger is taking over 4 wickets a game at 23, i mean seriously if he's fit how could he be dropped?

The fact that Siddle was RESTED last week I think suggests something, when every other bowler in the 17 was playing.
 
Bollinger is not fit. He is underdone, hasn't been bowling much and they are not confident he is right to play. That's why Siddle is in contention.
If Bollinger is fully fit he is ahead of Siddle.
Some people on here need to learn reading, man. :cool:
 
yeah i couldn't believe they rested siddle last week. whats he played since the better part of a year out? cuppla woeful odis and cuppla shield games? shoulda been bowling at every opportunity. and if he's not in the eleven he shouldn't be in the squad. should be out playing as much cricket as possible.

come to think of it, who actually was bowling for vico when huss and johnson tonned up? mckay was in hobart and siddle was rested. leaves vico pretty thin eh?
 
I'll take anything that doesn't include Siddle and Johnson in the same. Poms would just have to sit back and wait for the "4-ball". Then as for getting anyone out after the opposition's no.7...........How many times have those two together struggled to do that with dumb bowling. I'd rather Bollinger or Harris half fit. If it's a greenish pitch Watson will support those bowlers well anyway. In Harris's case they were doubtful about him lasting a 5 day match, well he got 9 wickets in a 4 day match and bowled well throughout.

Yes and if we bat first and then are bowling on a flat day 2 and 3 wicket, you risk Bollinger breaking down, being unavailable for most of the series, then Watson has to bowl more and you risk him breaking down (seeing as he is our best player these days) and could stuff our chances for the whole series.

Harris is not fit enough to play, get over it. Bollinger is obviously not fit enough to play either.

And yes we got the point about 50 posts of yours ago that you don't like MJ and Siddle in the same team. But unless Dougeh comes up that is what you are going to see in a couple of days.
 
Bollinger is not fit enough to play such an important match, Johnson hit form against Victoria with both bat and ball while Siddle and Hilf were rested and Dougy really struggled.

As for people claiming that Siddle and Johnson can't play in the same side together, well you are wrong.
The South African tour last year was probably the last time our bowling attack really fired and was able to manage get batsmen out and Siddle and Johnson were by far our best we haven't had a bowling attack look so dangerous for a long time. Its funny how much better players can play when they are fully fit and firing;)

"firing" being the operative word. if you've got a car that runs once in two years and purs like a kitten while its running its still an unreliable bomb
 
It just shows how stupid the Johnson and Siddle can't bowl together argument is.
Siddle, Johnson and Hilfenhaus together have performed best
 
they "can" bowl together but most of the time they don't. they're both loose to begin with. when one loses it the other can't pick up the slack and when they both lose it its diabolical

i think dougy will play. i hope so. i hope they're just showing loyalty to siddle by chucking him a cheque for being up there

3/25 is hardly struggling mate, it was only the second innings he was off the boil a bit.

Bollinger is a far more dangerous bowler than Siddle, he's averaging 23 this year! He bowled enough overs in the shield game to show he's fit enough, has to play imo.

Fair enough to be honest I didn't pay much attention to that match to be honest after 20 wickets fell on the first day.
Still think all the signs point to Siddle being picked with Hilf and Johnson.

Siddle has played 3 FC games and about 5 OD games, 140 overs all up

Very thin attack and Macca and Hastings broke down, had 2 bowlers well over 30 leading the attack

He has also only bowled 23 overs for the entire season in that 1 game. Averaging 23 on that pitch isnt a good thing ;)

Fact is he bowled well in the 1st innings when the pitch was a shocker then come the 2nd innings with the game on the line he was completely useless, Shane Watson even took 5 wickets before breaking down himself.

A very poor 2nd innings showing may lead the selectors to believe he isnt actually fit, 10 overs in the first on a poor pitch then struggling when backing up the next day, not a good sign at all

lol. A bit of Mark Waugh rumour mongering is not breaking down, when you consider he bowled the 3rd last over...

Watch the cricket please. Neither can apply any consistent pressure, the most important thing bowlers can do. Both have too many loose ball and inconsistent line and length. bowling together applies no real pressure. You can have one attacking bowler in a side who just "lets it go" gives away a few but but takes wickets, but no more. That we haven't got with Johnson and Siddle on top of a new spinner.

Johnson would've been perfect playing with McGrath Gillespie and Warne but we don't have that luxury now. He plays but Siddle doesn't.

Siddle and Johnson, let's go back..........South Africa chased down 414 1st Test, 2nd Test couldn't get Steyn out and the last 3 wickets put on 270, In both Test bowlers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Edgbaston, couldn't get Panasar or Anderson out, neither could maintain any pressure throughout the whole series as England simply waited for the "4-ball". Inabaility to get the tail out, generally through loose, dumb bowling. We could even look at the recent one-dayer as well against Sri Lanka where both bowlers bowled loose and like idiots allowing Sri Lanka to recover from 8/127 and win. Johnson get wickets at least, as for Siddle...........

Think that covers it.

You would know that of you bothered to click on the link I posted.
You show you have about as much of a clue as the selectors when you attempt to use ODI performance as a judge on his form, he has never been a good one day bowler at any level it was lunacy to play him in those matches matches instead of Sheffield Shield when clearly they had him in mind for the Ashes.
Maybe you should take your own advice and watch the cricket yourself.

Yeah, lets take that as a reason not to pick him. Bollinger is the best quick bowler in Australia. No Bollinger, Australia have zero chance of winning the Ashes.

Anybody using that he is under done or that hasn't recovered from injury means that Clarke and Katich should also be sitting out.

That tour is looking more and more like a freak occurrence, happy two week purple patch that temporary covered up how bad the team is right now.

It was also played on some very green tracks, tracks that are very rare in test cricket nowadays.

Green tracks do tend to turn games into more of a lottery which is why south africa used them on the 1997/2002/2006 tours (and to negate warne) i still don't understand why they did it in 09 when they had a superior team.

Good batting tracks where they can expose our quick's(like they did at the mcg) would have been more sensible.
