You can't really be serious in regard to the booing of Franklin. This kind of reaction to star is players who walk out on their club has been happening since Ron Barrrasi left the Demons for Carlton back in 1965. For those who feel that booing at AFL players is their right as an AFL fan the jeering of a bloke the status of Franklin is to be expected. Andrew Ireland's puzzling decision to make public the fact that Hawthorns most popular modern icon sought out a move to Sydney after 2012 and had his manager negotiate a deal during his last season at the club while persisting with the line that he had made no decision ( we all knew that was BS) left a bad taste in he mouths of many, including many in the inner sanctum of the HFC. Ireland was clearly frustrated by the backlash that the Franklin deal caused but as an experienced administrator should have known that it was going to cause a fair bit of angst. Perhaps he didn't and dosent care.Who knows? The fact remains however that the reaction to Franklin from some Hawthorn fans is not in any way unusual. I hear people say that Geelong fans didn't boo Gary Ablett when he took his GC suns to skilled to play the cats. Rest assured, They bloody well would have had he left them to take up a contract one of their main competitors for the premiership.

Epic facepalm.

I honestly believe that part of the reason is that, rightly or wrongly, people don't like being reminded about Australia's past. That doesn't necessarily make them racist themselves, it's similar to the white Americans who don't like being reminded of their nation's history of slavery. They know that what happened in the past was wrong, they just don't see why they should have to keep apologizing for it. Again, I don't share this view personally, but I know people like this and I would imagine that this is how they think. I would hazard a guess and say that they probably also believe that politics should be kept out of sport and that the booing is partly a response to that.

However, with Goodes the booing had gotten to totally ridiculous levels way beyond what other opposition players have to deal with. Those that boo him because they feel threatened by what he says or does seriously need to stop and think about what they are doing as it enables others to express racist sentiments that have no place in modern Australian society.

Impressive analysis. Mob mentality plays a large part also. Let's all agree to return to the days when umpires were fair game to both sides. Generally, they are the most boo worthy at any game of footy. That's why they are paid - for the counselling after each game..

A crueller person than myself would simply call you a moron for missing the obvious intent of the message (complete with emojis for the incredibly slow) but Robbie was pointing out that there are a number of obvious reasons Hawthorn fans would boo Franklin, so saying that Hawks fans boo Franklin as part of a justification for booing Goodes is stupid.

I did indeed miss his ironic point and apologies to all. There are indeed people out there who think the booing of Franklin is idiotic, immature behaviour ( which it mostly is ) which reflects badly on some Hawthorn supporters who should be thankful of his service to the HFC and wish him well. This of course is never going to happen. On your other point I agree completely with the notion that booing Buddy proves there is nothing sinister in booing Goodes is stupid. I have heard people say that the fact that other indigenous players aren't booed proves that the booing of Goodes has no racial implications This is so simplistic it is laughable. It's like an American saying back in 1968 "I despise Martin Luther King but it can't be racially motivated because I quite like Wilt Chamberlain".

Let me guess; you think the way Long and Winmar confronted racism was better.

"confront" there inlays the problem Goodes regularly says "my people" too much them and us from Goodes instead of "we".. I have many many friends with dark skin, Sri Lankan, Americans who all treat me exactly the same way that I treat them there is no reason for separation.

Completely separate to that discussion I do voice my opinions about sports people who carry on like twats.

Nick Kyrgios - Twat
Tiger Woods - Twat
Bernhard Tomic - Twat
Robert Allenby - Twat

Dare I say it Adam Goodes - Twat

Many indiginous Australians feel there is a separation from non indiginous Australia though. When we take into account issues such as health, education, life expectancy and employment opportunity there is a vast gap. I don't think the blame for this can be completely sheeted back to non indiginous Australia but it can't be denied there remain serious indiginous issues in this country. Goodes is a wealthy man who will not face the kind of hardship that most of his fellow indiginous Aussies will.He can have as comfortable a life as he wants and not concern himself with the plight of his fellow aboriginals. But he doesn't. He has deeply held beliefs and views on these issues and for expressing them receives a level of indignation that belongs to a time in the past. About time people grew up.

So......do you therefore think Sam Mitchell is a Twat or are you really just hiding behind the old "my dark skinned friends" defence??

Sweet, glad you don't feel separation issues from your mates after they r*ped and murdered your people and went on to steal your people's children for centuries. Couldn't understand why you'd be upset if you were.

Because he's a shit bloke in real life, so far up himself

I hear Josh Gibson is also a top bloke. Swans fans should cheer him.

I haven't read any of this but from a TV perspective, the Hawks supporters were very well behaved re Goodes...corrector not?

I was sitting at the opposite end but yes I think that is a fair assessment. Given how many disposals he had there was ample opportunity for them to boo but didn't hear anything. The only booing was for Corky Mitchell

Rewatched the 2012 grand final and was there. Amazing the lack of boos for Goodes. Almost as if something changed between then and the 2014 grand final which I was also at. Whatever could it be.
