Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

I think part of it was we were found out, but we looked tired more than anything else.

Bit of both but we can't claim the 'I'm tired' defence this week, they have had months to sink beers.

Back to my original post, I think we picked the wrong team. We didn't start poorly (yay!) however we had the same persistent issues (midfield couldn't win the ball, forwards lacked marking presence) yet we added a new one - defence looked weaker.

I'm not too disconsolate. Essentially one very poor qr cost us and Hawthorn were a significantly better skilled and drilled team than I gave them credit for.

The tardiness of the Day and Sicily tags gave me the tomtits and the fact that so many of our young pre-season stars failed to make an impact disappointed, but I think we can assume it will take a little while for the whole "new coach" thing to click into place. Hopefully, not too long however.

Grundy's first half was poor but I thought he (and several others) improved after half time. We got to within three points and then the rain came at an inopportune time.

Very high standard first game of the season but I'll say now, if we see the gap between the quality of the footy and the quality of the umpiring that we saw on Friday night for the rest of the season, it will drive me mad.

Clear as day yet again we were sucked into someone telling the coach they were fit. If Grundy was fit, I'm a supermodel. No chance he was near fit, yet we have Ladhams available and don't pick him, literally could not have been worse. I'm fine with the other structure of the team but maybe a Hamling is someone to consider going forward

Well said IMO.

Sorry scary but anyone other than Sam Wicks being 'BOG' for us is just not right. There is doing your job and then there is what Wicks did on Friday night.
Wicks stopped a single (2nd year) player.. Heeney (most on ground, tackles, contested poss., clearances) had to stop an entire midfield as he got no help from Rowbottom and Sheldrick
Wicks was great, but Heeney BOG for us.

Chad imo, 2.1 and 21 possessions. He was our best by a fair bit. Wicks was outstanding in a new role for sure. Heeney was fine, but 21 possessions was 'okay nothing more'. Chad was keeping us in the game all night long which is a good thing as regardless what he decides if he turns up every week like this we should be thrilled

Three people each had different 'BOG's yet we lost.

That's weird. I thought we only needed three players to be a great side!

They weren't BOG, I won't be shocked if none get Brownlow votes, Chad might but it would only be 1. BOG was Day and by lengths, then Meek for mine, it's close but he was so critical to the reason they won. Then take your pick, Sicily was good (he's an annoying pest so rarely gets votes though), Karl Amon was outstanding off the wing. Chad our best by a fair distance. probably out of those for the votes. Personally would go 3. Day 2. Meek 1. Chad

Remember we had a short break compared to them having about 3 days extra and also had to stay a night in QLD, but im not sure about tired .
I complained about the scheduling last week as did Dimma saying it was unfair for us

I think we looked tired the second half of last year. Friday night I think we had a poor plan

Tiredness wasn't helped by poor list management by the coach. players needed rests

Which is why it baffles me that we are trying to change the way we play so much!

well it was both, that gameplan was never sustainable so there was a need for change.

At 3/4 time Corey had 5 disposals. Not sure that can be regarded as better than McI or Lloyd.

Corey has skill & speed, but needs to find the ball more to be effective.
He had 8. Had 5 in the 3rd quarter. After half time, it looked like every one of his 7 touches was composed and clean. He was evading oppo players, making good decisions.

First half I had to check he was playing but after that was a positive. Hopefully continues on. 4 tackles as well, which isn't amazing, but better than most.

If I throw the ball back in from the crowd, do I get a score involvement?

If so, I have 2 career score involvements.
I threw a couple of streamers one day and hit the foot as it was kicked and the player and it was not a Swans game , so i got 1 . Then we have our mate who threw the apple at Doug Wades foot as he kicked it and bang we are in finals , that was a very important involvement

Apologies, I stand corrected.

Ended up with 10, which still isn’t really enough for a mid.
He isn't a mid in seniors though.

Zero centre bounces, lined up on the wing a bit, got some stoppage clearances, but you aren't going to get more than 10-15 touches being a 2nd or 3rd stringer there. His 2nd half is what we'd like to see across a whole game.

Played about 3 full games , McVeigh had about 60 of them and then there was Sundquist

Not sure where we would be without Chad but hes worth two top 3 draft picks.
I was wondering what the promising signs (plural) were from the game, besides Wicks, but Chad looks absolutely primed for a huge year.

Just need one or two more blokes capable of winning the ball in the centre and getting it to him and he could be the no.1 player in the game by the end of the year.
