So Box Hill's involvement in the finals campaign comes down to this final home and away match of the season against Collingwood. The equation for Box Hill is simple. Win (or draw) and you're in; lose and you're out.
The Hawks needed to come from behind last weekend to overcome the Northern Blues (having trailed the Blues by five points at the final change), but they kicked 3.9.27 with the wind in the final quarter to 0.3.3 to record a much-needed victory.
In the race for the Frosty Miller medal, Jackson Ross will need a day out against the Magpies to catch former Hawk and current Port Melbourne spearhead, Jordan "Moose" Lisle. Lisle has 40 goals to his name going into the final round, while Jackson Ross is in third position, with 33 goals (two behind Jake Riccardi of Werribee). Port Melbourne has the bye before finals, while the Cats host Essendon on Sunday, so Ross will have first crack at overtaking Lisle. Chances are if Ross manages to kick eight or more goals in the game, the Hawks are going to come away with the victory.
Collingwood will be coming off the bye and are strengthened by the return of suspended AFL Magpie, Jaidyn Stephenson, who plays his first game in almost three months after serving a lengthy ban for gambling on his own team (and on his own performance). It's caused a bit of a stir with the Magpies exploiting a loop-hole in the AFL fixturing.
However, Collingwood won't be playing for anything but pride, as they're two games outside the eight with one game left to play.
Depending on other results around the league, either Casey Demons or Box Hill will be facing Port Melbourne, Werribee or Geelong in the first week of the finals in a cut-throat elimination final. Port Melbourne have the bye and are currently fifth on 42 points. Werribee and Geelong both play this weekend and are on 40 points each, separated only by percentage. Werribee travel up the Westgate Freeway to take on Williamstown tomorrow night (first bounce is at 7.15pm), while the Cats host the Bombers at Kardinia Park on Sunday morning at 11.40am.
In the meantime, while the minor premiership has been sewn up by the Tigers a fair while ago (and they get a bye to lead into the finals), Williamstown and Footscray are locked in a ding-dong battle for the other home qualifying final. They're both tied on 54 points each, with Footscray's percentage a whopping 147.06% (the biggest in the league) and Williamstown on 123.44%. The Seagulls will need to beat Werribee and hope against hope that second-bottom Coburg somehow cause one of the biggest upsets in recent VFL history as they host Footscray (at Footscray's home ground at the Western Oval).
The Seagulls will know whether they have a chance of taking second spot by the time they run out for their warm-ups against Werribee, because Footscray plays Coburg at 12.30pm tomorrow and Williamstown hosts Werribee at 7.15pm.
If you're not able to make it to Box Hill City Oval this weekend to support the boys, then you can catch a live stream of the game on the VFL website.
