There have been sightings of snakes at our place, but they don't stay for long. I live in the sticks, couple towns from the Goon and Bunyip. I guess you would expect snakes out in Gippsland this time of the year though.

I used to live in Vermont Sth in Melb and we had a few big bugger off tiger snakes just up the road from us....and that was the suburbs! About 10yrs ago...but I'm sure snakes are more common in Melbs than most ppl think!
Cheers

Supposed it was a Brown Snake as well?

To be honest, I thought that Melbourne was too cold for most snakes?
I was bitten by a brown snake earlier in year up in North Queensland. :o

Ouch? Was it a venomous bite? (Supposedly there can be occassions when the bites aren't venomous)

It's funny though, I always thought that the Melbourne climate would have been too cold for snakes. When I moved to Sydney first, I happened to live in the West and say a Red Bellied Black snake fight, kill and eat and Brown snake. :o

Very memorable. :p

Even down here in arctic tasmania the snakes are about...Killed one a few days, tiger snake bout 3.5 foot (lil fella)..

I hate them though but i actually felt kind of sad after i chopped him in half..guess he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

How did u know it was a 'him'?

and was it the chop that killed him or did you chop him after u killed him?

If so, what did u kill him with?

Quite curious... :)

Lol, yeh i was a bit presumptious, i got no idea if it was a her or a him, lets call it a him for now ay..

It was the chop of my trusty hoe that did the deed, like a hot knife through butter..

One time i was bitten by a brown snake when i was about 14 years old.
Damn thing looked dead and didn't move after quite a bit of prodding and poking so i picked it up and started using it as a whip against my brother.
Well i'm sure you can guess what happened next. :(

And that was my second time i was bitten by a snake, clearly i didn't learn from the first time.
Damn snakes.

It was venomous enough for the doctors at the hospital to test the bite and say "you were bitten by a brown snake." I'd been insisting that it was just a green python as I was high as a kite and very drunk. Anyway because of the size of the snake (1.5-2 metres) the bastards took me all the way from to Airlie beach to Mckay and kept me in intensive care for 12 hours. I even got a write up in the local paper for my efforts. I didn't tell them that I was trying to pick up the snake by the tail and ended reaching for the wrong end. (It bit me on the hand.) :o

I lived around the Bunyip area for about 15 years and always used to see red belly and brown snakes this time of the year. Usually sun baking on the dirt roads.

I still play cricket around the area, but haven't seen any snakes yet. Its only a matter of time though.

I've been reading a book about the history of the Sunshine area. Back in the days before TV & video games, when the local kids had to entertain themselves, a popular pastime was snake hunting. The youths would find a dry stone wall, shove in a sharpened wire, attack the snakes then beat them to death:eek: One boy got over 30 snakes in the couurse of a summer!

The book doesn't record if any kids got bitten. Kids today are no fun!

This area still has plenty of snakes, brown and tiger. The western subrurbs are built on rocky volcanic plains criss-crossed with creeks and rivers - ideal for snakes. If you go to Watergardens Shopping Centre the rocky creek out the back has a sign warning people no to cross because of the snakes in there.

I went to Kingsville Primary school in Yarraville in the '60s and '70s. I reckon we would have got sent home 2 or 3 times a year on average because someone found a snake in the schoolyard.

Given how dry it is I'd expect a lot more snakes this summer.
