How could they have possibly been criticised for taking Coughlan ahead of Cloke? Firstly, Cloke was taken before Coughlan, Secondly, Collingwood had already nominated Cloke as their f/s pick, Richmond couldn't take him.

Not my opinion, there is some commentary on it in a Football Budget somewhere.....

It's all well and good to pass it off as 'in the budget somewhere', you made the comment. Richmond didn't pick Coughlan ahead of Cloke, they picked him after Cloke had been picked up, and they couldn't have picked him even if they wanted to because he was a f/s pick by Collingwood.

I see the point Zombie and AGREE with you.....simple case of hypothetical misinformation ok. I remember Robert Walls talking about it somewhere.

Good to see people keeping us honest out there in the world! :D

My bad I apologise.

Playing in the shadow of a son

IT became a regular debate in the early rounds of last season and probably will continue to be discussed throughout the decade: why, and how, did Richmond fail to take Jason Cloke under the father-son clause in the 2000 national draft?

After being given his first senior match in Round 2 last year, Cloke quickly became entrenched in the Magpies' backline.

Mark Coughlan, the player the Tigers chose ahead of Cloke, was struggling.

Three matches off the interchange – in rounds four to six – were preceded and followed by stints in the VFL. The senior matches followed five ordinary games in 2001.

"In the end, there was a fair bit of pressure, certainly from that second year of footy he had," Coughlan said.

"I honestly hadn't thought about it up until then. I was playing in the VFL and struggling. I'd be lying to you if I said it didn't spur me on to start getting my act together because, you know, Richmond had selected me in front of him and he was playing pretty good footy, and I was playing footy in the VFL.

"I had to get my act together and repay Richmond for picking me, prove to them why they did it."

In the first round of the 2000 national draft, Richmond chose Kayne Pettifer at No. 9 and in the second round, when it could have taken Cloke under the father-son rule, opted for Coughlan at No. 25.

By the end of 2002, the status of Cloke remained loftier than that of Coughlan. The Collingwood player suffered the disappointment of being banned from playing in the Grand Final after an AFL Tribunal suspension, but finished in the top 10 in the Copeland Trophy.

Coughlan, despite missing six matches, finished third, behind Wayne Campbell and Matthew Richardson, in the Tigers' best-and-fairest.

"I've met him (Cloke) a couple of times, but I haven't actually spoken to him about it (the Tigers' decision at the 2000 national draft)," Coughlan said.

This season Coughlan at least has drawn level with the man against whom he will always be compared.

Cloke has been axed from the Collingwood team this year, but performed excellently against Adelaide at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

Coughlan is being tipped by many to win the Richmond club champion award.

Coughlan v Cloke – football has been and will continue to be fascinated by it.

i'd have thought the bigger stuff up was the swans decision to select luke ablett with the pick before coughlan even though they'd shown a fair bit of interest in him prior to the draft

I think you'll find that in relation to the Cloke/Richmond discussion and the F&S Rule in general, that the player in question has the final say as to where he prefers to be listed.
Ben Cousins could have been listed at either Geelong,Fremantle or West Coast. Despite vigorous courting by both Geelong and Fremantle he chose West Coast. I was told that Cloke and his Father preferred that he went to Collingwood and if that is the case Richmond could do nothing about it.
Maybe some of the Richmond supporters who post on here may care to comment.
