Close has only two AFL preseasons under his belt, so he does not have the tank yet to play out an entire season. He was supposed to be rested three weeks ago, but injury hasn't allowed that to happen. Miers will be back soon, and I imagine Close will make way for him.

Overall, Close's first two seasons have exceeded expectations, and his end of season review will be overwhelmingly positive. Despite what the Dunning Krugers 'feel', he is coming along nicely.

Yes he was a pussy first 3 or 4 years hell Corey was even a pussy the first 3 years
I don't think he shirked physical contact, more so that he just did not have the body for it. Some players (think Ablett, Chapman) are so strong through the core that nothing knocks them off the footy. Varcoe never had that body.

And his shoulders were pretty rooted early on in his career weren’t they?

Close was due a rest 3 weeks ago and never got it. Cumulative effect in play. Must be managed this week. 2nd year player needs a break at rd 22. Never seen that headline before lmao.
go Catters

So? His body is far more advanced then a second year draftee. More like a fifth year.
This comment is just dumb, sorry to be blunt but hes easily the least physically developed player on our list and it was one of the main reasons he went undrafted originally.

Close has never been a natural goal kicker in his life people expecting that are going to continue to be disappointed.
Sure, but if you're not kicking goals as a forward, at least finding the ball a bit more would be nice. You can't have both Dalhaus and Close in the same forward line with so little on offer offensively. At some point, that hurts you because defenders can pay them a little less respect.

Face palm.

it’s his age that makes him physically develop ffs.

23 year olds are stronger and faster then their 19 year old versions all else equal.

and if at 23 he is still the least physically developed on the list (not something I agree with) then it provides another reason why he has little talent and limited ceiling.

Close needs more self confidence which will come in time if he continues to be selected. He will then start taking more shots. He is being criticised for not being a natural goal kicker (but they are rare these days), but those people overlook the fact that he keeps getting into goal kicking positions which is the first essential for a goal kicker .

That's true of players who go straight into the AFL system. But Close went back to country football after under 18s and only spent one year in the SANFL before coming to Geelong, so he hasn't had as much opportunity to develop his body with strength and conditioning work as most other players his age have.

Since you ignored it last time - as per information from the club, Close is the lightest weight on the playing list, with Holmes even having more muscle on his bones. And maybe they means Close is one of those who's not necessarily going to put on much weight or muscle, but it'll be good to see how he goes after another preseason in the gym

It's not so much that he's 23 but rather that he's a second year rookie that is still developing - it's not like he's had 5 years of senior football under his belt, so stop judging him as if he does

And on your last paragraph, the fact he's still developing completely contradicts your last point - to start with he's shown himself to have plenty of talent in the role his playing which is that of a linking forward working up & down the ground (sorry to disappoint, but he's not in the team as a goal sneak)

And as for "limited ceiling", that may be true if he came in as a fully developed, senior player without room for growth and that's not what you expect from a first time rookie - the fact he's still developing, still got work to do in the gym etc shows that he's ceiling not limited and that there's room for continued improvement; we see improvement from season 1 to season 2, so let's see how he goes in season 3 and beyond

that doesn’t change one bit of my point. He may be the lightest. But he would of been even lighter as an 18 year old. And if he is still lighter at 23 then all our 18 year olds then that just shows up a massive weakness. he didn’t start playing football 2 years ago.

Players in lower leagues still do effing weight training.

This. Close not kicking goals is fine if Dahlhaus isn't in the team (his link-up and field play is fantastic, would like to see him get more of it), but if two of our small forwards aren't kicking goals, it does limit our options. Once Dahl retires, I don't see it as a problem... unfortunately, that doesn't help us this finals series.

Maybe he didn't do weight training or see the inside of a gym until he joined Geelong

It was in reference to foward tackling pressure

Except there's nothing in your about forward tackling pressure - seems an easy out on your part after the fact

wtf? He was the best defensive player in the club. At the age of 19.

talk about writing history. He was a tackling beast in his first couple of seasons. His highest tackling season per game in his whole career was his second season. Many suggestEd the only reason he was in the side was cos of his foward tackling pressure and little else. His weakness in his early years was finding the ball.

Why would I talk about a player who played solely as a foward pocket in his early years as a great defender? only an idiot would assume the post wasnt about foward defensive pressure.

Close is actually lighter now than he was in the U/18 Champs, he got tested at 178/74 and is now 181/71, says all that needs to be said right there.

probably Carrying puppy fat.

anyone trying to argue that muscles get frailer (outside of serious sickness) as you go from 18 to 23 is a clown.
