Some Docker fan had to be so sad and blow up what is a fun and educational exercise into a negative peice of publicity for the club.

What is so wrong with adding up merchandise and food? It's not blatent promotion and brainwashing!!!!

It is developing mathematical skills in a fun and engaging way.

At least the eagles are actually working with kids.

Now I can actually feel the whole impact of the rape incidences in the opposite code over on the East Coast.

If this piffle made the news here in Perth, one imagines what the media is like over east on that matter

What would you have said if Freo bought this out. BTW check out Freo training every Tuesday night if you want to see a team working with kids.

Although not the biggest deal in the world, most people will see this as a case of marketing. Marketing in itself isn't a problem, but many people won't like it when the Eagles try to make out their motivation is helping kids.

it's going a bit far. Far enough for people to question the Eagles motive.

So why did they do it? We have an education system that is sufficient. The Eagles should be teaching kids football skills (they are footballers afterall) and leave the maths et al to teachers and the education department.

It is developing mathematical skills in a fun and engaging way.
Maybe, but it's in your face like macDonalds.

At least the eagles are actually working with kids.
If that was their motive, it wouldn't be so bad, but firstly thay should stick to teaching what they are good at, and second they should let the edu dept and teachers teach the kids.

Now I can actually feel the whole impact of the rape incidences in the opposite code over on the East Coast.
Did you get r*ped?

Would you like your kids going to school and having product placement as a part of their learning - particularly if it were the Dockers?

A definite thumbs down from me. I didn't think the marketing dept could do worse than the dog's breakfast jumpers. Did they not think they people would see them in the same light as used car salesmen?

Who and where?

Why is it all these dockers fans on the eagles board? Stick to your own, are you really eagles fans but are too afraid to admit it. Wait, seeing as you've got x amount of dockers fans on the eagles boards means that there are more dockers fans in W.A! Go **** yourselves and stop worrying that we're stealing your kids that you brainwash and get a life.

Not just Dockers fans.....& I wasn't aware that supporters of other clubs aren't allowed to post on you board.....

You'll notice that Perth's media also think Eddie McGuire's conflicts of interest are breaking news...

Hello, The West, and welcome to the year 2001. It's good to see they're at least in the same century now.

That's a nice point - why don't you try and sell it to some children?

They already use it in schools across WA. The West Newspapers in Education

Sunday Times had the Win a School Bus competition. All about selling papers.

I doubt that parents have an idea of half of the commercial materials that are used in schools.

so we've come up with a pretty innovative idea to try and get the young kids to support the eagles. what is the problem??

I agree. Even though I'm an eagles fan I just don't think it's appropriate - the eagles as a corporation is not a non-profit organisation, it is essentially a particular brand providing access to an AFL product.
And where does this lead us to? Our kids sitting in a school with logos and corporate advertising all around them? I find this all to be a rather shameless exercise that I hope blows up in their face.

But we're not selling! We're giving a brighter future to WA's school kiddies! We don't want a thing back except the knowledge of a job well done.

:p

I'm not defending The Crimes, but giving schools the opportunity to win a bus - which is a pretty expensive piece of quite handy equipment - is a fair bit different from putting tarted-up shopping lists in schools.

Eagle Fan's anecdotes about angles and six times tables and using sport as an educational tool are miles away from the document known as "The Eagles Rock My School" - where buying Eagles merchandise is the basis of the maths lessons and reconfiguring rote passages of fan drool constitute English.

It's really rather pathetic.

So if through this product you could win something then everything would be hunky dory? I doubt that you have even seen the document in question.

The Eagles want to "help out" in the schools???

Great!

Why don't they buy the bloody bus, and have a huge sign on the side "this bus proudly supplied by the West Coast Eagles (inc)"...

sorry - couldn't resist that last bit....

No arguments from me on that one.

McNisbett ponders "What schools could do with a few new computers??"

Great - we'll supply them with a couple. A nice big sign in the computer room, or across the top of the monitors so the kids have it in their face:

"computers courtesy of WCE"

all above board.

It's the insidious nature of how this "assistance" is being dished out that is the concern. And the most disturbing is that this current govt is endorsing it.

And all you blokes who are saying that we (Freo supporters) are just jealous (or whatever pathetic thing helps you to justify this to yourselves), why would anyone else from the other states have an opinion anywhere near as strong as ours? It doesn't affect them or their kids!!

If the Pies (for example) were doing this in Victoria - every second supporter of all the other clubs would be reacting similarly. And I dare say a good number of the more reasonably minded Collingwood supporters also.

Fair go Bluey! A lot of the dockers (or any other opposition club for that matter...) fans on this board have a lot of valid and reasonable comments. They make unbiased comments and sometimes you wouldn't know they followed another club!

Just think before you say stupid things mate!

I don't see how it is treacherous in any form.

Being an ex-teacher who couldn't hack it, you should be aware of what is considered best practice when it comes to teaching Mathematics in schools IP. Best practice incorporates the following:

1. Student mathematics achievement is directly affected by the extent of the students' opportunity to learn.

2. Students can learn both concepts and skills through problem solving.

3. Giving students an opportunity to discover and invent new knowledge as well as an opportunity to practice what they've learned improves achievement.

4. Long-term use of concrete materials is related to improved math achievemnet and improved attitudes toward math.

I think you will find that the booklet promotes all of these practices it is just that you and others have a problem with the way it is packaged. If the package came from somewhere such as Woolworths or Harvey Norman there wouldn't be the furore that is being exhibited.

Like I have said on many occasions the average person has no idea what commercial programs are already established in the school curriculum and what influences good pedagogy. Maybe this shift into education by the Eagles could establish a new paradigm of cooperation between schools and football clubs.

We'll all be in trouble if they let you Weavils teach logic in schools. No, it would not be okay if this document allowed schools to win a bus. The document is flawed, you goose. It has all the educational properties of an Action catalogue.

If the Weavils had a competition in which schools could win a bus, that would be great and no-one would be complaining. You're such a rich club - we're always hearing about it - you can actually give something of worth to the education department.

The document - which I have actually seen, Eden Hill Primary School being one of my clients - is nothing more than a shopping list which teaches children that junior members get a discount at the Weavil shop and that paying the outlandish prices attached to AFL garments is to be treated as, what are the words, an "everyday activity".

I wouldn't be so sure about the assertion I placed in italics. The rest is near-illiterate twaddle. I wouldn't get you to teach my dog. Now, you will have to excuse me, I'm off to discover and invent some new knowledge.

The Sunday Times sucks as well. If every kid out there who was furiously collecting tokens collected the paper money instead, how many buses would that have bought?

(Sadly enough, I read the ST and the West a couple of weekends ago, and it was clear that the ST made a far better fist of reporting the Van Der Mye / Western Power matter than the West. Which doesn't mean that the ST is any better, just shows how far down the S-bend the West has gone)

This whole episode is really rather upsetting.
