Traded Brandon Starcevich - traded to West Coast as part of a 3-way trade with Brisbane and Fremantle

Fair enough, we will just back end Oscar Allen's deal and you'll lose pick 2. This why is West Coast aren't led by bigfooty nuffies, because they aren't dumb enough to do shit like that.
You won’t be using the pick no matter what afaik. Matching a bid uses picks from the front of the order back no? So your first and our assistance are the first 2 used for a bid match? Bris fans would know better as we don’t do it a lot

West Coast: We need some assistance

AFL: You'll just mess it up

WC: No, honest we've learnt .....draft is your friend

AFL: OK here is an end of round 1 pick

WC: Now let's see .....Cal says there are some solid players at that pick .....

AFL: Click

WC: Get Brisbane on the line .....Starcevich is coming on board .....actually you're right he does have that risk of never playing again......front load that 5 year deal.
Matt Clarke is that you?

Surely that’s nowhere near enough for a two-time premiership player who’s arguably the best in his role across the league.

Starce’s value goes well beyond a token gesture. That gifted first-rounder to West Coast should be the bare minimum starting point. Realistically, you'd expect some sweeteners, maybe a future second-round pick or even a player heading Brisbane’s way.

Let’s not forget we’re handing the Eagles pick 2, which they could easily split into multiple first round selections. That kind of leverage doesn’t come cheap, and it certainly shouldn’t be squandered.
You are having a proper laugh.

Free agency period runs from 3rd October to the 10th.
Trade period run from 6th October to the 15th.
Draft is in November so plenty of time for WC to stuff up Brisbane by bidding or not bidding. This is almost the most important thing for Brisbane to secure in the negotiations.

I suspect even an incompetent WC will be splitting the deals and will be asking the AFL on the compo before they decide to match or not.

Brisbane has little leverage unless the AFL are pulling strings & it wouldn't surprise me now that Swannie has moved to the AFL.

Northern state bid players never get selected too early and most of the time fall.

Interesting angle, but parking what Starcevich will do on the side - do we need player consent to lodge an offer? any offer for that matter? I know player has the right to reject at the end of the day.

If player consent isn't needed to "lodge" one then you can extrapolate another grey area - which is Brisbane asking "any" club out there to lodge an offer for Starcevich and just match it. Starcevich can reject it but RFA rules get triggered and he can go via national draft to West Coast if they're still keen and if he lasts till pick 19/20.
Next level qld idea

Not really, worse case we'll go future pick deficit. We'll get Annable either way.
I don't think it's as catastrophic as you're trying to make it out.

Would still have to find more picks to match a bid at 1. Currently have 1522, before free agency pushes things back. Can only go into deficit 1167, so are currently 11 points short.

Still have Ah Chee trade points to come in. We'll be fine either way mate

If we get hold of 19 we'll promptly trade it for future pick.. even to 2027 draft.

Is there seriously not going to be a massive revolt if WC trade pick 19 for Starcevich?

The issue isn’t WC getting the assistance, it is the fact the premiers are getting an end of 1st round pick for a player that should be leaving via FA. Brisbane are effectively getting band 1 compo when they should not be eligible due to bringing in two FA’s the other way. Complete bullshit on top of their already heavily discounted father sons/academy players.

If we sign Starcevich as a free agent then most likely we get pick 2 diluted down to pick 19 and Brisbane get nothing.

TBH I don't really care if Brisbane have picks 18 and 19. Whatever they have will be eaten up on a big for Annable anyway. So whether they pay 18 + 19 or 18 + a second or trade for a bunch of picks in the 20s and 30s the net effect is about the same. As a WC fan I care only about whether or not we get pick 2 and whether or not we get Starcevich. And for the latter at what cost. Brisbane are going to get another free kick in the goal square anyway so it's a bit like worrying about whether they get 50 on top of that.

WC already had pick 19 and now have 19 and 20. The alternative scenario with no PP is that we just trade our pick 19 to Brisbane anyway.

All the issues for WC are valid but the AFL’s choice of assistance package is extremely questionable. If they simply allowed you to acquire Starcevich without impacting Allen compo no one would really have an issue. Instead they have given you a decent pick that will go to the reigning premiers. The reigning premiers who already have access to a top player in this draft, and multiple top players in the last 3 drafts.

Brisbane is losing a dual premiership player via restricted free agency. Brisbane is also paying enough $ to Oscar Allen for West Coast to get pick 2. It's in West Coast's interest not to dilute pick 2 so they are looking to trade for Starcevich if all medicals go well.

We are benefiting via the trade but there is a vested interest for West Coast to do so. Alternate is they take him as RFA and dilute pick 2. Brisbane won't get anything in that scenario like you said, due to the free agents coming in.

Brisbane can match any offer via FA. The fact you are choosing to spend the money on other players is your loss. The AFL stepping in to ensure you get compensated is a joke.

Yep, it makes zero sense unless WCE either back out of trading for Starvevich, or use a later pick, such as Hawk's 2nd.

The PP only benefits Brisbane if it's used in a trade for this guy.
