Too young and too few games to judge. I am one of the faithful. Experience and confidence (via more games) will iron out Maynard's deficiencies. He's a bull. We need bulls in the side. He stays.:D

(Folks in case you are not sure, I am joking.
I'm not a plant, I'm not an animal, I'm a human being)

Being human does not preclude one from being either a plant or an animal. In fact in the literal sense of the latter it's a fairly hard and fast requirement!

On Maynard I think it's a bit premature to be spouting jubilant proclamations of A grader based on his body of work to date. Rather if he keeps developing as he is then he should at least be a solid 200 game player.

Although I don't like the Luke Hodge comparisons(imo it sets expectations a little high, particularly when considering where Maynard is coming from compared to Hodge at the same time in his career) the similiarities are encouraging. They're both hard at it and so far the attributes Maynard has displayed suggest, to me at least, that like Hodge he could play anywhere between the back and forward pockets. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing him spending a little time up forward or even on the ball where his attacking instincts would be more useful given his lack of experience, especially while the likes of DeGoey, Greenwood and Elliot are on the side lines.

to me he looks better as a mid, unfortunately we have too many all ready.
try crisp back and maynard in his spot

He's a worry type.
IMO he is very slow and lacks agility to play off half back.
He gets torched by quick movement.

His left foot is overrated as he very rarely spots up passes via quality decision making. He is very much a straight line tunnel vision type.
He has aggression but it counts for little because he can't think his way through situations often getting caught holding the ball trying to break through tackles in def 50 or bombing away when other players in his position competition wide spot targets and lower the eyes.

I think you're on the mark. If he hasn't improved after another 20 games, I doubt he will be anything more than a bit player.

I would definitely try him in another role this year. He has a few scars from almighty cockups and it may be what's holding him back. A move further up the ground where he doesn't need to worry about be the cause of a goal could sort him out.

He's my boy. Still only played 30 or so games. A brute.

Sometimes our view of a players game can be skewed by one minor turn of fate. I thought Maynard was ok...I enjoy his whole hearted approach to the game and contest. But his best moment in the game, that everyone is praising him for, could so easily have been his worst and cost us a goal if the umpire had made the correct call.
I'm talking about the chase back with Florent obviously.

Firstly, Maynard let his opponent get goal side of him when Franklin was streaming out of defence.. Yeah Franklin can kick that far Brayden.. didn't you know.? Secondly, Maynard gave away a pretty clear free kick to his opponent 20m out straight in front of goal when he tugged him back. The fact that he got away with this does not make this a good piece of play from him. The free kick was obvious and would be paid at least 6 times out of a 10.
Good result aside (lucky), It was poor defending actually. For me this is the bugbear with him... He does a lot of stuff that is really not that bright.

Maynard was always going to be chasing florent in that scenario - it was a rebound play so Maynard can't get position on Florent, all he can do is chase him. If he didn't tug the jumper (which a lot of players do and get away with) florent is probably going to soccer it and score anyway so with that said Maynard had nothing to lose by doing what he did. And I thought he did it quite well as he didn't overdo it and give away a free.

I thought he was great last night.

Used it well, was ferocious in the contest and didn't have his standard one brain fade (sometimes it's two) per game. In fact I thought he and Ramsey were both fantastic after so so first up performances.

I've never doubted that he would be a good player but he has flaws to work on. But these flaws are of the decision making kind and not physical or the courage kind (much like a young Benny Johnson except Maynard is a better kick and bigger) so I'll wear those faults when they're outweighed by his qualities and his upside.

Going to be a ripper for us for years.

Yeah, im stuck on this moment too.
Just keeps going round and around in my head.
Just cant let it go.
These sometimes singular moments in the game from all players makes me want shout out into the night.
' sh!t- delist ! '

Brilliant as always plowking . You are what you are.

I don't get the Maynard hate, kids a bull. Just needs to get the between the ears stuff right and his poor disposals and turnovers will be a thing of the past. He just needs time.
That's because when you win it's much easier to see the upside of a player but when you lose its just easier to criticize. People are also jerks which doesn't help.

Maynard :heart::heart::heart::heart:

Strong, uncompromising, tough, and lovely kick most of the time. Helps his teammates out, is fearless. Has all the makings of a 200 game player for us and will be.

Can't wait to see him get minutes in the midfield and watch the bodies fly around.

Eh, I've always defended Maynard even after bad games. He won't learn what he needs to learn in the vfl so we are best to keep him in the side. We are not contenders this year anyway so let's atleast do our best to develop a stabilised backline.

Yeah a push before Florent goes to pick up or kick the ball off the ground would have been better imo.
