Give the kid a chance and stop writing off players. Maynard will be a 200 gamer mark my words. He had a crap first quarter but so did everybody else. He spent the next 3 quarters busting his ass and getting involved in every play he could! He has determination in spades, players like that you keep because you can teach foot skills but you can't teach determination and a want to succeed. That's why Marley is gone. Long live #thebull

That whole play was fantastic. He receives a handball, kicks it to Moore beautifully on the run, demands it back and then gets it forward to WHE who kicks to Elliot who Kicks to Greenwood and gets us a shot on goal.

Maynard is absolutely crucial for us going forward. If we develop him right he will be one hell of a utility. He may not become a star (I have my hopes up though), but he will be a fantastic role player for us regardless. He has a willingness to move the ball fast off the half back, which is what we desperately need. He WILL make mistakes with that style of play though, but he is young and will learn from them. It staggers me how others don't see his huge upside going forward, but instead choose to focus on stupid mistakes that he will not learn to fix by playing in the VFL. He needs to stay in the 1's if we're to see just how good this kid can become.

Almost got a vote from me and I desperately tried to squeeze him in, but Smith pipped him in my opinion. He was just dreadful in the first quarter; gave up two direct goals from terrible play, but got them back. He kicked one himself and was behind a couple more. That smother in the last showed what he's made of. he'll continue to make blues and get shat upon in here, but he's on the up and we'll see him further up the ground before long.

The mistakes will become less frequent as his experience grows, but I think it will always be a part of his game that we will have to accept. We did it with Heath Shaw so why not with Maynard.

You need to give the kid a break, If he was horrible and offered little else then fair enough but there is a lot to work with on evidence.
If you think Maynard makes some bad blues go back and watch Alex Rance lowlights from his first few years, he had some shockers but the talent was there.

He is a future rock. He was overcome by the situation for that horror kick, but had the mental strength to go on to be a crucial contributor in the win. Pretty impressive.
Maynard is not where anyone should look for a scapegoat.

His first quarter was horrible. And it compounded what was a horrible last quarter last week against GWS. To be perfectly frank he probably cost us the game with 2 poor handballs which were turnovers, and then he was on Johnson for the last play.

Most kids would've dropped their heads. Maynard on the other hand turned his game around and was one of our best on. His attack at the footy was great, his footskills elite, he kicked a goal, had a great smother and was part of a defence which only conceded 1 goal in a half of football.

That says a lot about it. If nothing else, it shows he has a lot of pride in his performance.

I think the Alex Rance analogy above is spot on. His early days he was a real butcher of the football. Experience does wonders. He is also still the youngest player in our side right now. I think in another 3 years, with another 60 odd games behind him, he is going to be some sort of player.

As I said earlier in this thread, he shows great resilience - nothing seems to bother him too much which is a great attribute for a kid and let's not forget he was probably the youngest guy in the side on Saturday night.

He has some real mongrel too which I love.

It's my expectation. He'll definitely play deeper, IMO. Loved to be proved wrong though.

I think he was still playing back just had a lot more time and space to float further up the ground. He is good 1 on 1 but can get lost in the zone. Footy's changed a hell of a lot in a short time and these loose goals you see a lot of (in every team) is not about a player beating another player it's about the defence as a whole not covering the situation. He's still young and needs to get a bit more confidence because when he goes in to his shell he his disposal numbers drop off big time. I think him not being an offensive threat is a much more negative impact to our team than him conceding a few goals because one of our strengths are we good aerial medium defenders that can cover any 'gaps' quickly if his gambits don't pay off.

His kicking is sublime. He's gone from being a talented kick but poor decision maker to our best kicking weapon.

I just think it's a weird fallacy people have with rebounding defenders in this day and age. In the footy style at the moment where they're probably just as important as midfielders in generating forward thrusts one mistake that leads to a goal is blown out of proportion compared to 20 odd possessions of quality.
