Player Watch Brayden Maynard

Am I the only one who thinks Maynard will never be a midfielder? why are people so keen to see him there?
I’d say it comes from Rd23 of 2017, where he spent time in the midfield, and looked really good.

he has another 4 years of experience under his belt since then. I see no reason he can’t be a valuable on baller

For once l am with seedsfan, he will have an individual workout program that he has to do, to maintain his fitness even for preseason.
And he also could be a fitness nut now.
And what he does in his own time is up to him
And as it’s part of his job

Why don't we just keep him in defence?
Seems to me if player asked me, (theoretical coach) for a chance to show me his wares I would very happily agree.
But, of course as the coach I would keep an eye on Big footy sentiment.

An argument I've seen against moving Maynard to the midfield, says that he's just too good in the backline to be moved. But naybe he's just a bloody good player in the guts as well? We'll never know for sure unless we try. If it turns out to be robbing Pete to pay Paulo, well we just move him back & try a draftee instead.

A new coach should be trying a few new things, and especially during a rebuild, and *especially* when you've just gone from 6th to bloody 17th.

Questions around his tank are reasonable, ....maybe he could be a centre square impact option for 20? Minutes a game?? Or more likely he gets himself into midfielder fitness levels...(I think I saw him doing extra fitness etc)

We moved our best forward into the mids lately, which turned out ok. It's a standard process.

I have no interest in him as a midfielder.

What he does by foot in the backline and how he can match up on most players is a huge reason he needs to stay down back.

His versatility would really be sorely missed. Going from Riewoldt to Darling to Greene is incredibly difficult. I also think with the additions of Lipinski and Daicos we won't have the room for him to rotate upfield

One of Jack Crisp or Brayden Maynard need to play part-time mid for me, our midfield is just too small and too soft at the moment.

Both would be perfect matchups for a Dustin Martin/Marcus Bontempelli/Nathan Fyfe type. Perhaps Maynard for Martin, the taller Crisp on Bont/Fyfe etc. Perfect matchup both in the midfield and in our defensive 50.

Crisp has the added dimension of his run and carry game, so I think Maynard need to be utilized in the midfield more often.

In both cases I think you're robbing Peter to rob Paul as well.
Taking two of our best rebounders out of the game for a negative role makes no sense.
If you could make a case they would excel in the own right in the midfield maybe.
Not just to tag an oppo player.

Maynard wouldn't be a pure negating tagger, he would be a 2-way running 1 on 1 contested mid, similar to Jack Steele/Josh Dunkley in early years. Some of the best mids in the comp go through this transitional pathway too.

Ideally we keep Maynard deep in defense, but he clearly has stated that he wants to play midfield and our midfield is very thin atm.

He holds the key to the kingdom, IMO. If he can perform to the standard of say 2021 Pendles that provides us with 4-5 10cp per game mids (JDG, Adams, Grundy and Pendles the others) and enough presence to not need to shift Maynard.

I like him down back myself because I have no confidence in our KPD mix considering we’re unlikely to get a full season out of both Roughead and Moore to the standard of 2019 (which we need to press for the 8). His ability to play on that Reiwoldt/ Darling/ Mihocek/ Gunston type forward is pivotal because I think he does it better than Howe.

Pies "thin" midfield - Pendlebury, Adams, Sidebottom, DeGoey, J Daicos, Macrae, Lipinski, N Daicos, T Brown, C Brown, WHE, Poulter, Bianco
With Crisp and Elliot part time mids, also Noble spot time on the wing
Edit - plus Reef(knew I forgot one)

The bolded are speculative at best right now and the italicised are average quality. Our midfields wafer thin.

Don’t get me wrong I have hope in Daicos x 2, Lipinski (clearly) and Sidebottom giving us something in 2022, but coming out of 2021 we’re a long way off the best midfields and there’s every chance this is another midfield draft for us.

I think Macrae moves into the 22 this year with Nicky D.
For what it's worth the last 5 on that list aren't currently in my best 22(WHE Sub)

I hope you’re right on Macrae. The 2021 signs were ok, but for mine it’s not a given he’s a best 22 player next year. I agree re the last 5 although I have doubts that the club will see it the same way.

And even more 'especially' since we are now hoping to take the ultimate prize in 2022 - the wooden spoon! Perfect time to 'experiment'... And if he goes too well there, we can just move him back to defence.

I'm afraid we're too good for the spoon, but we'll see. We could use "experimentation" as a way to tank, if you want.

I feel we are about 2 injuries away from getting the spoon in 2022. When we lost Pendlebury, Moore and Daicos late last season combined with the fatigue of our first year players we were clearly the worst team in the comp.

I am all for giving him a go in the middle but on his own merits.
I agree, he is extremely down back though. He is our best defender and best rebounder.
A year with a fit Howe would be a bonus though.

We’ll be aiming for the finals in 2022.
