Maybe. We won’t be last though.

I think Hawthorn have that stitched up personally. I suspect that like us coming out of 2020 things are going to get worse before they get better. The problem for me is I can’t easily identify a team I know we’ll be better than. Probably North, maybe Adelaide, perhaps the GC, possibly St Kilda, but beyond that I think we’ll need McRae and co to be it and a bit in order to push past others. Especially if we continue to push kids through which I hope we do.

Sometimes finishing at the bottom of the ladder can be crucial for premiership success… how else would Melbourne get Petracca? Or Richmond get Martin? We still need more elite young talent on the list, I’m talking top 5 picks.

Melbourne’s had more top ten picks than hot dinners in the last ten years.
Hopefully it doesn’t take us that long.

Yeah agree, for us to have any chance of contending again we need a minimum of 3 elite Petracca or of that ilk types to add to our very ordinary list. It is going to be a long road back by the look of things. Maybe if all of Maynard, Moore and Jordy become free agents, this happens next year and could fast track us a bit.

Getting rid of any of those 3 is madness. Good players and than risking it in the draft lottery.
Unless they want to leave and we are forced.
Likely finish 12 to 16th. Our list looks good to me although many young ones that need more games into them.

Signing De Goey to the monster contract that he's going to demand may be worse than losing him an getting an early pick + salary cap as compo. This is a man whose never been close to a BnF or AA.

He’ll probably have a very good year next year. And this will be because he wants to earn ‘a Grundy sized contract’. I would urge the powers that be to move him on if that’s the case. He strikes me as someone who plays for himself well above playing for the team.
He just isn’t that good at the end of the day. He is just one of our best, which isn’t saying much as we finished in our lowest ever ladder position in our 131 year history.

I'm not sure finishing 4th this year "isn't close", especially given he was 3 votes off 2nd.

But if he puts a whole season together of what he did in the latter half of this recent season he'll very likely win a B&F and make the AA team

Let’s say he has a terrific 2022. That would still be one legitimately excellent season out of a career which to date has failed to live up to expectations. We would still be wise not to go over budget to retain his services.

Agree to an extent but he did come 4th year in the Copeland. He had a better season than Pendles but Scott always polls well even when his season has not been that great.

Scott's first half of the year was way better than Jordy. Jordy finished much stronger.

Unlike how well our midfield did with De Goey in it?

De Goey is very hit and miss in the midfield, only knows 1 way that is to steam forward and hope his teammate wins the ball and can dish it to him. When the ball goes the other way he's 5 metres behind his opponent and offers no pressure.

This might be true but Pendles, Adams and others' opponents tend to dominate them without a lot of defensive pressure too. And Jordy can win it in the CS unlike Pendles but people do not like Scott receiving any criticism.

This is very true, can only lay a tackle if falls over and the player happens to be there. Not the most consistent pkayer to be delivering into 50 either.

Is it wrong for a 47 year old block to have a man crush on a 25 yo footballer. I love bruzzie. Heart and soul of our footballer club.
He’s been talking about Midfield for a number of years now. I’d love to see him get a go, leaves a massive hole down back though.

I wouldn’t be against him as captain either

If Howe can stay healthy and we want to trial Nick Daicos as a half-back who rotates through the midfield I could see our back 6 being:

Howe - Roughead - Quaynor
Crisp - Moore - Daicos
7th: Ruscoe

That could allow Maynard to push up field, if it's something McRae wants

The thing that Maynard gives though is that lockdown ability that the others don’t necessarily have with his pace and tenacity. Howe can do it but then you loose his intercept abilities. Perhaps IQ and step into that breach.

Yeah, he's had a few stints in there, played there in our last game for the year and was shocking.

Never shown any clearance or ball winning ability even when playing defence.

Averaged 21 touches in 2021 so has no issue finding the pill.

Spent a lot of time locking down on opposition forwards as well.
