The weird part is that it reads to me like he contradicts himself by first suggesting it’s an uncommon occurrence to attempt to smother the way he did only to then suggest players need to think about these actions and exercise DOC. How the **** are they meant to do both? If it’s uncommon the consequences are more often than not going to be unforeseen until it becomes common ala sling tackles that weren’t a thing 20 years ago.

Geez, if the AFL's position is: "Leaping forward in the air with force to an opponent running in the opposite direction holds a key risk of badly injuring their opponent. It's a dangerous action to undertake & it breaches the duty of care owed to the other player."

Then why haven't they reflected that position in the rules - that's the obvious place to include this assertion and to communicate it to the players - waiting for an event like this to happen is simply reactive management of the game

Would the attacker wait to kick the ball from so close to the defender as a courtesy to the defender?

he didn’t jump forward though, he jumped as high as he could to impact the ball, his forward momentum from the approach carried him forward, the whole jumping vertically defies physics, ridiculous argument

If Woods is suggesting it was ok to smother, but he should have done a different smother whilst running at full pelt, then we are off to the races.
