Another loss to Brazil in the World Cup Qualifiers, this time 1-0 to Uruguay. This leaves Brazil 4th in the standings, but the real worry is they are now equal on points with 5th placed Uruguay.

There are only 5 games remaining, and Brazil haven't won a match this year in WCQ - it's beginning to look like a disaster for Australia, that would be just our luck to have to play them for a spot in Japan/Korea next year :(

We DO NOT want to play Brazil!! They have not missed a WC in the HISTORY of the WC. I think Brazil have been aproaching their World Cup qualifiers half-arsed, as the top four in the CONMEBOL progress to the Word Cup Finals.

Imagine the side they'd pit against Australia if we were between them and a spot in the WC!! If Austrlalia lost a series against Brazil, we'd be forlorn about out bad luck and that we were beaten by a better side. But if Brazil lost...mate...the coach better get himself some bodyguards. Mind you, it's not like they would do much to stop a country of "pissed off" Brazilians!! I would leave the planet if i were him.

Interesting times ahead. Stuff it........BRING ON BRAZIL!! I wanna see all those little Brazilians tear their own country down!!! :D:D

Yep bring 'em on. Hold out for a draw over there and then bring 'em here. 2-0 on aggregate to the Aussies.

(well, you gotta be optimistic, hey?)

Yeah, I actually wouldn't mind if we play the Brazilians because we'll have nothing to lose and everything to win by playing them. We would be rank underdogs, no one in the world expecting us to win. Brazil on the other hand would be one irate nation with the whole country demoralised that it had come to the point where they had to play Australia for a spot in the World Cup. They were upset in '98 when they were runners up, they'll be devastated if they don't make the World Cup finals for the first time ever.

The home crowd in Brazil would probably be less than totally supportive if they have to play Australia with the Brazilian players under incredible pressure to perform and the Aussies with nothing to lose and everything to win. It would almost be like having 2 home matches!

Bring em on I reckon. We only lost 2-1 on aggregate against Argentina in 1993, anything can happen.
For some strange reason I think I'd rather we play Brazil than Uruguay, Ecuador or Colombia, that way if we won we could definitely say that we deserved our spot :)

Bring 'em on my arse!!!!!

Firstly we would not win either games. Rivaldo, Rinaldo, Carlos et al would all of a sudden be mirraculously released from their clubs. Viduka and Kewell, although great, aren't up to this level and they are supported by second raters that would get murdered by these blokes.

Secondly, had we have won aginst Iran, we would have been eligible to play against SE Asia, and would have qualified easily IMO. Thus for World Cup-

1994 - Honourable loss to powerhouse Argentina on second leg. No qualification, thus no round robin qualification for 1998.

1998 - Heartbreaking loss on aggregate to Iran. Only team not to lose a qualifier and didn't make it through. No qualification, thus no round robin qualification for 2002.

2002 - See Argentina! No qualification, thus no round robin qualification for 2006.

2006 - Have to play fifth placed African side. Nigeria fielded local side with no boots, until they came up against Australia and after an honourable loss on the away leg, no qualification, thus no round robin qualification for 2010.

etc, etc, etc!

Australia are easily within the top 32 Soccer nations on the planet. They deserve to play in the World Cup and more importantly, deserve to take that next step to fairer qualifiers!

Pray that Uraguay finishes fifth, as I can't be f*cked getting my hopes up again in the 2006 Oceana qualifiers!!!

Too right, I look at some of the teams currently in line for a spot in the finals, and there is no way we aren't better than them. I mean, are you telling me a side that beat Brazil and France couldn't beat the likes of Tunisia, Liberia, Honduras or El Salvador. We even beat Paraguay last year with a 2nd rate team, and they are currently 2nd in South America!

I have no doubt if Australia got to play WCQ more regularly, and then made it to a World Cup, we would be ranked in the top 20.

Uruguay have a good side though. I think no matter who we play it will be very tough.

Errr.... if they're that way inclined I suppose.... depends on the individual Brazilian....

But anyway.... I mean, what can you say? If we gotta play 'em, we gotta play 'em, and if we think "oh crap we'll never win this" then sure as diddly we won't.

One question FIGJAM... what's this about if we'd beaten Iran we could qualify through SE Asia? I'd not heard that one before....

Cheers,
Sbagman.

LOL! That should be "Bring 'em on?; My Arse!!!" I can't speak for each individual Brazillian, but I ain't that way inclined! If I went to Rio, it'd be for a non-stop shag-fest with beautiful bronzed women like in the movie "Blame it on Rio". I mean if Michael Cane could have scored that blonde chick, I'll be dobbing supermodels!!! A movie also noteworthy for a good perv on Demi Moore's pre-operative t*ts!

It is my understanding that world cup finalists are all permitted to qualify for the next World Cup, via a round robin series. I have assumed that we would be in with Korea, Japan etc. due to our geographic location, but I am 99.9% sure that finalists (and even select non-finalists) don't have to go about things in this "cup-like" manner. We are getting the short end of the stick!

The way brazil are playing at the moment, we would beat them. However, having to play off against a non-traditional soccer country in australia would be a real dent in their egos, and hence they would come out firing. Not exactly what we need.

I am confident we could defeat Uruguay over two legs, and I'd say our chances against Colombia are 50-50.

FIGJAM you are right in saying we get the raw end of the deal. We should be in ASIA and leave the rest of OCEANIA to play off against each other with the winner playing 5th in South America or something like that.

And if you want to see what a cushy run to the finals looks like, check out the USA's draw

no doubt

i wouldn't mind drawing them in our group, a very overrated side which gets a big kick along through potential cup sponsors and television rights etc etc......

We have one of the best sides in teh world i believe. We have a few real top players, and if we can get Viduka and Kewell (altho i hate this kids guts) to play, we could beat anybody in the world. I think we have a reasonable chance if we have to play Brazil. Id rather play a lesser country like Equador or Uruaguay but it would be just our luck to have to play the most succesful soccer nation ever. We have our best national side for about 15 years, and we have to play the most succesful country in the sport - just our bloody luck. We are destined never to make the finals

WHOA! Let's not get carried away here.

We simply have got to get rid of the Oceania confederation and merge it with Asia. No stupid playoffs, and I don't think the likes of Japan, China, Saudi Arabia are out of our league. Just noone mention Iran...
