The 2009 Breeders Cup is closing in quickly, with the 15 main races being run over 2 days at the Santa Anita racecourse in California this weekend.

The races start Saturday Morning our time, with the Fillies and Mares Sprint starting the feature races off at 7.30am.

The 2 day event concludes with the running of the Breeders Cup Classic over 2000m, with the favourite at the moment being "Rip Van Winkle".

There are plenty of guides around, and most betting agencies have markets up already, but the best guide I have seen so far is at the link below.

http://www.breederscupraces.net/

The one thing I laugh at is the "World Championship" tag that goes along with the event, and the fact that horses from only 6 countries have won races in the 24 year history of this "World Championship", gotta love the Yanks marketing.

I will do some form and come back with a few specials before the 1st feature race tomorrow.:thumbsu:

I'm looking forward to seeing how Zenyatta goes against the males in the Classic and whether she can stay undefeated.

Would've loved to see Rachel Alexandra vs Zenyatta in the Classic but the artificial surface dicouraged her owners.

Here are my tips for the 1st days of racing at Santa Anita, basically Friday's major races. Unfortunately it seems these races aren't going to be covered by TVN, Sky Racing or ESPN, although Saturday's races are going to be fully covered by Sky and ESPN on Foxtel/Austar.

I'll just listen to the Friday races through a local radio station I will find later on.

Races start at about 7.30am our time tomorrow morning.

Marathon: Father Time (about $4.20)
Juvenile Fillies Turf: House of Grace ($6.00)
Juvenile Fillies Dirt: Connie and Michael ($6.50)
Fillies and Mares Turf: Midday ($3.20 Fav)
Fillies and Mares Sprint: Informed Decision ($3.60)
Ladies Classic: Rainbow View ($6.00)

I won't be betting a heap on these races, but I really like 1 or 2 of these, with Informed Decision my best straight out and Rainbow View my best each way bet of day 1.

Day 2 is when the real stars come out, so I will place a rather more detailed and lengthened review tomorrow night some time.

Best of luck to all.:thumbsu:

Got the last 2 winners, and still have one more race in about 10 minutes.

I've about broke even on day 1 so far, so hopefully Rainbow View can get up and give me some play money for Flemington and Day 2 at Santa Anita too.

Had my biggest bet on Informed Decision, she is unbeaten on Synthetic surfaces and continued that today.:thumbsu:

Doing a full Breeders Cup review at the moment, it will be up by 11.30 hopefully.

This one has more detail, so it is taking a little longer.:)

So the 2nd and final day of the Breeders Cup is almost upon us, with 8 main races to finish this years 2 day event.

Obviously the last race on the card is the big one, the Breeders Cup Classic, with Rip Van Winkle and Zenyatta the favourites at the moment, but before that there are some other very quality races.

Because of a fairly bad day at Flemington today, I am going to not over do my betting on these races, but I will still give my tips “Rizzo Style”, that being a winner and 2 other winning/place chances.

So, remembering that the first race of the main 8 races is on at 5am, although it seems coverage on Fox doesn’t start till 7am on Sky Racing, with their coverage through to 9am, and ESPN has coverage from 7.30am through to the main race at 11am (AEST).

So my tips for the final day of races are;

Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf: 1600m, 5.45am.

Pounced – 5.00 (Interactif – 5.00, Bridgetown – 9.00)

Pounced seems the best of the internationals, with Bridgetown winning his last race beating 3 horses in this field, and Interactif winning it’s last 2, all in the U.S. I’ll back the European horse here.

Breeders Cup Turf Sprint: 1300m. 6.23am.

Cannonball – 7.50 (Diamondrella – 7.00, California Flag – 5.50)

I like Cannonball here, as it is the Golden Jubilee runner up from Europe, and I like that form for a race like this. The 2 dangers for mine are Diamondrella and California Flag, both consistent sprinters, but with CF having a reputation as being a bit wild, as it threw it’s rider off at track work but conveniently ran back to its stable.

Breeders Cup Sprint Dirt: 1200m, 7.10am.

Gayego – 3.40 (Zensational – 2.50, Capt Candyman Can -9.00)

I like Gayego here, as there seems to be a lot of pace from the first 3 barriers, and the favourite may get over run here by fast finishers. Gayego won a Group 1 over the distance last start, and closed very quickly late, as did Capt Candyman Can, plus that name is sensational.

Breeders Cup Juvenile Mile: 1600m, 7.49am.

Eskenderya – 15.00 (Looking at Lucky – 3.00, Dfunnybone – 5.00)

My value bet of the day, and each way chance in a very open race. He won his last start by 7 lengths, and in a race full of inexperienced horses, I will take a risk here, and back the horse that could be the most freakish. The rest of the field is a miss match of types, so I just chose the first 2 favourites, as the form is just too confusing here.

Breeders Cup Turf Mile: 1600m, 8.28am.

Zacinto – 6.00 (Goldikova -2.60, Justenuffhumour -16.00)

I like Zacinto here, just beaten by Rip Van Winkle (Classic Fav) in the QEII, so must have a lot of talent, and the favourite has drawn very wide here. Justennuffhumour I put in on breeding alone.

Breeders Cup Dirt Mile, 1600m, 9.12am.

Mastercraftsman – 3.00 (Midshipman -6.00, Bullsbay -6.50)

Bet of the day, in a very weak dirt mile field, Mastercraftsman has class written all over him, and would have run in the Classic if not for its apparent dislike of anything over 1800m. Midshipman is the stable mate, and won on this day last year, but has only had one start since, and Bullsbay is the most consistent horse in the field, and should run top 3.

Breeders Cup Turf, 2400m, 9.57am.

Spanish Moon – 4.50 (Conduit -2.20, Dar Re Mi -4.00)

Small field, but plenty of class. Spanish Moon has a ton of talent, and is the favourites stable mate, and I see the 2 fighting it out to the death. Spanish Moon’s problem can be its manners, it has been suspended in the past for not wanting to go into the barriers, so it is a risk, but one well worth taking in my opinion. Conduit is just a tough, solid talented horse who will be in the finish, while the other Euro Dar Re Mi will sit just off the pace and may have the final crack, one of the races of the card despite the small field.

Breeders Cup Classic, 2000m, 10.45am.

Gio Ponti – 14.00 (Rip Van Winkle – 3.20, Zenyatta – 4.00)

And here we have it, the “World Championship”, haha, or at least that’s what the Yanks call it. Anyway, I have gone with the local horse here at very good odds, only as a value each way chance though. I fully expect Rip Van Winkle to be the one to beat, but the field does have a lot of class, and RVW has lost plenty of times, although most of those were to the champion horse Sea of the Stars, who is now at Stud. Zenyatta is a cunning mare who is unbeaten, but is also having her first start against the “boys” and also at the distance. Has been unbeatable and unbackable in her own sex races though, so she deserves a crack at this field.

Going to be one hell of a race, with chances also given to Summer Bird and Quality Road who were close to each other in their last starts.

I hope you enjoy the meeting, I love watching this meeting every year, and also hope I have a few winners.

Below are some guides to the races that I have used, feel free to check them out.

Best of luck to all.:thumbsu:

Was anyone watching the Classic?

How good is Zenyatta, she was 4 lengths tailed off the field with 800m to go, yet she circled the field and won easy.

I had the quinella, so I'm happy, but damn, that horse is good.:)

Wow what a win by Zenyatta.

So who wins American Horse of the Year - Zenyatta or Rachel Alexandra? Two great fillies who have beaten the boys this year.

Zenyatta (2009):
Record: 5-5-0-0
Group 1 Wins: 4
Highlights: Breeders Cup Classic, Lady's Secret Stakes, Vanity Handicap, Clement L. Hirsch Handicap

Rachel Alexandra (2009):
Record: 8-8-0-0
Group 1 Wins: 5
Highlights: Preakness Stakes, Haskell Invitational, Woodward Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Mother Goose Stakes

Watched the one race, couldn't stand the race caller, and the guys before the race sounded like they were at an NFL game not a race track, turned it off the minute the race was finished, couldn't stand it haha.
