Injury Brent Macaffer - Knee injury likely ACL

I thought this deserved it's own thread, terrible news coming out of the post match press conference.

LATEST: COLLINGWOOD coach Nathan Buckley says the club suspects Brent Macaffer has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), adding to the Pies' injury-plague start to 2012.

"Unfortunately Brent Macaffer it is more than likely done his ACL, which is a poor result for us," Buckley said at a press conference following tonight's NAB Cup matches in Blacktown.

"We hope for the best, but we expect the worst."

:(

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

If Bucks is saying it's an expected ACL, as opposed to taking the easy option and sitting on the fence, then you can probably be at least 90% certain he's done the ACL.

Shattered. I was just saying to a (Geelong supporting) mate the other day in an e-mail that MacAffer is the player I was most looking forward to seeing play tonight, because he was so important to us in the 2nd half of 2010 and IMHO so badly missed with ongoing injury last year.

Ultimately, he's probably not the sort of player who would make the difference in terms of winning a flag or not, but combined with the preseason from hell we've had (as in, the only saving grace was that there hadn't been a season-ending injury yet) it's really bitterly disappointing.

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

If it's a ACL I hate to say he it.

He be a Candidate to be De-Listed at Seasons end:(

Terrible what path do they go with MacAffer now ? let him go at years end ?

I think you are both getting a little carried away. It's shit but why on earth would we give him the chop? He would comfortably be in our best 22 (some might argue that) and you recover from knee injuries. Delisting him would make no sense at all.

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

I don't think he'll be delisted, but it would depend on how well he recovers and how badly the injury is. However, if we're short on players to delist I'd expect he'd be on the top of the list.

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

Agree with TRS... if the medical staff think it's an ACL injury it virtually is certain, because there's really nothing else that has the same physical signs.

Can't even recall a single time where a suspected ACL, after the examination by medical staff, wasn't.

Dreadful news, poor WCE would have been perhaps even more devastated with Le Cras' injury.

Simon Buckley will be above him on that list, no matter what.:p;)

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

We heard the same sorts of things with Brodie Martin after a trial match last year and a couple of days later he was cleared of an ACL and didn't miss that much football, hopefuuly the same thing happens here.

Is he a candidate for LARS if it is the worst? Could potentially be career saving for him.

It's been covered but the surgeon that Collingwood uses is not a fan of LARS surgery so it's unlikely you will see a Pies player go for that option.

It wouldn't be career saving as he is in no danger of getting delisted as a result of the injury.

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

Lars is rubbish, can't see it being used the AFL again for players younger than 28.

Absolutely sucks about Macaffer, believe me I know how it feels :( Is a really good player when on and a great player to have in the team. Hope recovery goes good and he's back next year.*

*Or just hope he didn't do an acl.

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

I was also looking forward to having Macaffer playing this year. I think he plays a handy role for the team. If it's his ACL then I hope he recovers well and comes back strongly next season. I guess there is a slight chance he could return late in the season like Nathan Brown had planned on doing before he hurt himself again.

Re: Brent Macaffer - Knee.

That blows. Wanted a big year from him. Another forward down.

 I am really confused about Caff..I thought for a moment there last year that he was on the trading table & it looked like no one wanted him not even us...same as McArthy ...then Leon bolted & they decided to give Caff 1 yr contract to see how he goes....does he have a chance ??? surely it depends on who's finishing up at years end...good luck Brent :thumbsu:

I think last year was more due to what he wanted with his contract and what the club was prepared to offer him more than anything else. Davis leaving freed up a bit more in the salary cap. It's my understanding that the club always wanted him to stay.

Caff had looked so primed, fitter than ever, now this bull**** happens. I cant see why the Club would get rid of him though - hardly lacks dedication.

I'll just look forward to seeing him next year is all.

Def at risk of being de-listed. Poor form for 12 months, now on sideline for 12 months. I don't think he will be, but it's certainly not guaranteed he will be on the list for 2013.

I'm not sure you are correct about poor form

In 2010 he played great football
In 2011 he was injured on and off for the entire year missing a lot of football which had nothing to do with form

He is 22 years old many players a lot older than that return to play great football for many years after a reco. Two of our own that come to mind are Tarks and Lica.
