Heard his manager on the radio this morning and it sounds like we've pulled an offer we had on the table for him. Could signal some serious cap issues if we are withdrawing offers...

For mine, it would be a travesty to lose a player of his calibre. As has already been discussed on this forum, he was an integral part of last years premiership side and I believe he will be integral to the next...

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

I think people overrated him on this board, to be honest.

Last year he was always in the 20-25 range, and this year he hasn't improved his position at all (mainly due to injury). I certainly think he is one who could be moved on for some value.

If he could be moved on for a first round pick, that would be a tremendous result, or packaged somehow to enable us a crack at O'Meara (although unlikely) that would be a good outcome in my opinion.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

We didn't pull an offer, it says we haven't even made him one yet and that Caff wants to stay but is yet to be informed if he is a required player under Buckley.

IMO, you don't get rid of players who want to stay, especially ones that can play. It's not as if he is a total fringe player who is a hack. Had it not been for injury, he would have been a fit best 22 player throughout 2011.

We wouldn't get adequate compo if we let Caff leave. Not a good idea for mine.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

F'n Herald Sun - just realised after I copied and pasted their headline from the article that they called him Brett instead of "BRENT".

F^ck I hate jounos sometimes - bit of respect...

True that is what the articles says however I heard his manager on SEN this morning and he used the analogy of playing tennis when negotiating however when he returned the ball, it didn't come back - it hit the net.

According to him there was very much an offer on the table...

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

I think he is the missing link in our forward line. We really need a pinch-hitting lead up forward who can play on the loose tall defender. We tended to bomb it forward too much towards the end of the year. We needed a shorter marking option to balance the forward line.

He was awesome in the Grand Final in 2010, and then suffered groin injuries. I always hate trading players who are coming off injury interrupted years because they have less currency and we didn't see them at their best.

For mine, with a big pre-season, he could become an important player for us again. I hope we retain him because he fills a role in the side we lack.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Perhaps he may be used as part of a package for O'Meara?

Still, I don't feel we would get adequate compo for losing him (unless it somehow involves O'Meara). A trade with another club would do more harm to us than good.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

I hope we keep him and Goldy. Need them both.

Spot on, I am just not willing to affect our depth a fair bit for a bloke that will play in 2013. I know people want him becuase he will be a gun but I want a flag next year and I think that will be affected if we traded these two blokes. Sign him up Bucks!

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Maybe there is something physically amiss with the guy. Otherwise, why would he not be a required player? He was great last year.

I think this could be Tarrant (and Tarrant probably would have got Scarlett in the GF if N Brown and Reid were fit). Granted, we only have Tarrant for one more year most likely.

All in all, Macaffer is probably more valuable to us on our list than off it, but I still don't think he is best 22 next year.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

As if he would be offered the contract right now. Buckley isnt taking over the reigns til after the Copeland.
Surely he would have to set down with the coach first and foremost? The bloke is a fringe 22 player at best, its not that big of a issue right now.
If Buckley wants him then he will be offered the contract, if he doesnt then he will be traded.
Think this is being blown weigh out of proportion right now.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Even if he's fringe 22 (and I don't agree, think he's a little more intergral then that) you can't just trade out fringe 22 guys. You actually need depth at the club. We had a lot in 2010. We had less in 2011. Reading these boards we'll have none next year.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

His manager said an offer was made a counter offer was proposed and rejected and they no do not have an offera nd have to start again. Whether that means they revert back to the original offer or not I don't know.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Unless they are players in our top ten anyone who is not signed yet should be on the table come trade week. I don't think we should get rid of Macaffer I think he is what we missed from 2010. But if the price is right then by all means shop him around. But lets not make changes for change sake only do it if it will make us a better side. Same with Goldie.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Beams and Goldsack for O'Meara would be great!

it really wouldnt mate... 2 premiership players for a kid who we dont get our hands on till 2013

in no way does it help us win a premiership next yr, only takes away from the strength of our squad.

we need the Caff

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Watch our prelim against geeling on 10, watch the gf victory and tell me you would trade macaffer. Seriously, wtf. Macaffer is a strong player, he doesnt fall over, he takes important marks, we missed him so badly in the last qtr v geelong in this years granny. A player like that could have made so much difference.

Goldsack is a required player. Over 190 cms, has a bit of toe, thumping kick, can take quality players out of games, can play talls and smalls. Should have played in this years gf.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Say we do keep Beams, Macaffer, Goldsack....

Where do they fit into our best 22???

Can't keep them all...

thats the thing, a few wont be there mate.

People need to take a deep breath and let things pan out. Caff could be signed quite quickly. Nothing was gonna happen this week for anyone. Im sure talks will start on the weekend again between Bucks and Caff

one in the backline, one in the middle, another up front :p

the non smart ass answer is, they all fit into the best 22 of our premiership winning side

Thats true.
Just hear a lot of people saying they wanna keep Beams, they wanna keep Macaffer, we need to keep Goldsack.

Well we should be lucky that we have kept our top 15 players signed.
We don't need all 3 of them to win a flag.

I don't think he is overrated on this board at all. He is an integral part of our forward line and, in my opinion, was a missing link for us towards the end of the season but just didn't have the runs on the board and it would've been so much better having a fit and firing Macaffer on Scarlett, defensively, rather than Didak, who Malthouse tried using in Macaffer's role.

You'd think Buckley, depending on the salary cap, would hate to lose someone of Macaffer's calibre. The only problem is he would be underrated, value-wise, with other clubs but a middle to late first rounder would be adequate. I'd much prefer we kept him though, it is so important to have defensive forwards like him because it's such a unique role that Macaffer has covered to a tee.

Maybe true but it's not the strength of your top end that determines premiership sides, it is the strength of your bottom end.

Losing guys like Macaffer and Goldsack will severely hurt and test our depth. IMO, we lost a mountain of depth players at the end of 2010, we can't afford to lose too many more this year.
