Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Dont want to lose him. He is the consumate defensive forward and thats exactly what we missed last Saturday.........would have loved to have seen him lining up on Scarlett last week but instead what we got was Didak. Macaffer defines the forward press. Reality is that one of him or Beams might go as they both play similar roles, but hopefully they only go as trade bait for a player of similar experience. We dont need picks this year.

As for Goldsack, by all accounts he wants to stay.........God knows why he does however after being criminally omitted from a GF for the second time in his career. He is a keeper as far as I'm concerned.

(edit.........inadverently plagiarised PieLebo two posts above.......great minds think alike!!)

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Maybe true but it's not the strength of your top end that determines premiership sides, it is the strength of your bottom end.

Losing guys like Macaffer and Goldsack will severely hurt and test our depth. IMO, we lost a mountain of depth players at the end of 2010, we can't afford to lose too many more this year.

Yeah but we have kids coming thru.
Macaffer and Goldsack have never been more than depth players.

Out of the three Id rather lose Beams and thats becuase he would cost more and losing him would make more room in the cap and also I am not a huge fan of him and his attitude.

Macaffer defines the forward press.

This. Macaffer being out of the side this season also contributed to us being way too Cloke focused.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

honestly, max is on a downward slope. Sack fits in the first 22.

macaffer and beams are integral to our flag hopes. I dont think enough people appreciate the efforts of macaffer in the grandfinal. Cloke was hardly in the game and Caff became a workable avenue to goal.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

...his attitude.

What attitude? Have you seen his poor behaviour first hand or are you just assuming he has poor attitude because of all the rumours...?

Seriously, why are people so quick to jump on a player because of heresay and rumour. That is poor attitude to me.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Wasnt a fan of MaCaffer initially but his performance was pretty good last year and was invaluable as a third tall and forward pressure last year.

We need him back ASAP because we have too many fancy players running around atm and lack hard nuts for when the going gets tough.

Davis and Johnson are close to retirement and our depth will be tested soon.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

A lot of this type of question of required personnel and role players will depend on Buckley's game plan.

He may want rangey athletic types to find space or strong overhead marks that can lock it in.

I was a very early adoptor of Caf and equally love Goldy. The thing you'd say about Goldenballnutz is that 193 cm defenders don't grow on trees, whereas the 6ft forward is more common.

Am very happy as a booster of Caf for him to stay, but I think we have plenty of mid / small forward type options, so be interesting to see what happens.

Didak Tarrant and Jolly wont be far behind them.... And add Brad Dick and John McCarthy to that list who may not be around either.

We cant afford with a young list to be losing young but experienced players.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

I thought he was severely under-rated by many last year, and its only natural that with the 2011 GF so fresh that we could forget him. And even if he wasnt to finish in our top 22 (which I think he probably would), a genuine contender to the flag, must have at least one seriously decent backup player for defense, midfield and forwards.

For defense we are well covered with N Brown and Goldsack

For the midfield we have Beams, McCarthy (lessor extent)

and probably only Macaffer as a forward, which makes him more vital then we'd think.

To me theres one person we should either be delisting or possibly trading if he has any currency has suprisngly been missed in most threads, and I think thats Simon Buckley. Boot him to free up space if neccessary

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Def in our Best 22

see our press from last year + it without him this year!!!!!

would be a MASSSIVE mistake imo to let him go.

would not cost that much either, surely worth holding onto

Macaffer and Goldsack have never been more than depth players.

Except for when he played like 15 games straight in 2010 including all the finals games and the two GFs

Simon Buckley is depth, Brent Macaffer is best 22 when fit.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

I am sure he will be here next year. I would imagine it is all about money and like Dawes and others will have to take what is offered by the club.
Seems that GS and GWS have forced all clubs to throw large $$$$ at their stars to keep them and down the line someone has to suffer. It appears to be similar at all clubs. He is a good player and hope he stays on.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

Some clowns are mentioning Macaffer to Freo on the Drafts and Trading Board - potentially as part of a three way deal that includes Pearce coming to Collingwood.

No way I would want Pearce - soft, weak mentally (drops his head and gives up when tagged) and no heart. STAY AWAY!

I mean playing wise, I dont know anything about the off field issues, but when he is playing he doesnt have the attitute that he loves playing for the club and has a cocky sort of approach such as sticking out one had for a mark. I think he has tallent but his body language seems poor to me.

Well to be fair, Pearce wouldn't even come close to being tagged at Collingwood.

If what you say is true (not saying I agree but understand your thoughts), imagine his capabilities if Buckley gets his head screwed on straight. The guy is a gun to begin with and has massive upside if he has more in the tank to give on the field as you suggest.

Dane Swan was once a young player who lacked application and had a poor attitude (by his own addmission)....now a Brownlow medalist.

Was simply pointing to an attribute - mental weakness, rather than whether he would get tagged or not down at Collingwood.

To be fair, Pearce wouldn't even come close to making our best 22 ATM.

Re: Brett Macaffer out in the cold

The players who were "missing" when required were by and large the ones who didn't have pre seasons. Didak, Jolly and Maxwell being the main ones but Macaffer also didn't have a full pre season. Others that were down were Dawes, Reid & Toovey who all miss chunks of the season with injuries. You can't make a sound judgement given his injury status.

1 more year unless there is a pretty good trade offer IMO.

Sorry Tro, but that is a ridiculous call!

Pearce would definitely be in our best 22, without a doubt in mind. Whether we need another outside midfielder/run and carry player is another question though. I wouldn't say no if we got Pearce on the cheap to Collingwood, but when do Collingwood ever get anything cheap from other clubs... (outside Fremantle)
