According to the coach, Staker has to have a bit of a knee cleanup next week. Only expected to sideline him for a fortnight.
All the best Brent. How was the day B.D.?

I'd be surprised if he forced his way into the best 22 straight away.

To be honest, I wouldn't. He really looked to be in fine form in the limited times I got to see the boys training this pre-season. I was honestly expecting him to play a NAB cup game or two and that his form would secure him a round 1 berth. The latest setback has obviously changed that though.

I was expecting him to be best 22 after the NAB Cup gave him some match fitness.

With that missing out, I'd be guessing Round 2 will be in the reserves and then he'll be evaluated from there. I'm assuming he will miss Round 1.

He has missed a lot of footy, his fitness should be fine, but he needs some game time for game touch. I think he will play a few weeks in the 2nds now he misses nab cup. He is best 22 though, so I think he will get back in easier than most.

I saw him as someone who needed to earn his spot in the NAB Cup. One good game would have been enough, probably, but he isn't a Simon Black situation where his first game of the year will likely be round 1. With the news that Staker will miss the NAB Cup, I still think he has to show in a game setting that he is best 22 worthy. And he's (unfortunately) now given a few others the opportunity to shine in his absence.

Staker is worth more to the team structure wise than with just his ability as a footballer. I also believe that he did need to earn his spot back, but he would have done that with ease during the NAB cup. He didn't need to earn it back because others have overtaken him, more so simply because he has barely played any footy in 18 months, it might take a few games for him to get his touch back. I think they will still make room for him in the best 22 when he is game ready.

On the flip side, perhaps opens up a spot for Paps or Mayes if they impress in the NAB cup.

Would really love to see Jordy Lisle seize the opportunity with everything he's got. He's got the tools, just needs to show the desire.

I already assume he is in the team, i just think it opens the door to one of these big running long lead up types. Jordy does do a good job at getting up the ground as well though. Hoping he can stamp himself as a genuine key forward this year.

Really hope Stakes will only have one setback this year. His contribution to the team is very valuable when he is up and running.

Jordy's form towards the end of last season, including his efforts in the ressies finals should have him as first cab of the rank for a FF/CHF/forward Flank type role. The only thing that I see preventing Lisle from cementing a best 22 spot is his timid approach to his game. If he develops a more physically aggressive approach to his game he has all the other tools to hold his spot in the best 22.

Staker to miss NAB cup

BRISBANE'S forward planning has been tipped upside down by another bout of knee surgery for luckless Lion Brent Staker.

Staker, who was being groomed for a return to the forward line beside club co-captain Jonathan Brown, will miss the pre-season NAB Cup and at least the side's AFL Round 1 appointment with the Western Bulldogs.

He had surgery yesterday to remove damaged cartilage from his left knee and will be sidelined for up to eight weeks, meaning the premiership would be about three round old before he could hope to play a game in the reserves.

Does anyone know where Stakes is at? Would love to have him back in the side asap.

A while yet. Would be hard to envisage him returning to 2010 form right off the bat too.

Right. That is a shame. How many weeks off roughly from a return do you know? Yes he will definitely have to play in the reserves for a number of weeks and it would be an amazing effort if he ever got back to 2010 form however I still think he can add a lot to the team:thumbsu:

Injured Lion Brent Staker aims to return by round seven

Greg Davis From: The Courier-Mail April 03, 2013 11:00PM

THE last time Brisbane utility Brent Staker donned the No.14 jumper in a game, Luke Power was still a Lion. It was round 23 in 2011 and the Lions lost to West Coast in Power's last game for the club.

Staker suffered another serious knee injury in the defeat and had no idea of the heartache to come. The former Eagle missed the entire 2012 season as he rehabilitated his reconstructed right knee. Helping to coach the reserves side and doing jigsaw puzzles passed the time for the 28-year-old, who has played 29 senior games for the Lions since joining the club in 2010.

Not sure he should be putting his footy boots in the same wash as his guernseys...
Cant see his mouthguard.

At least he has drawn the line.

Can he be a short-term fix after Brown retires?
