Listening to Brett Burton talking on 5AA just a few minutes ago, Brett was asked who he thought would be the big improver for the Crows in 2003.

Brett said while he didn't want to put pressure on the lad, he thought that Brent Reilly would be the one to step up next season. Burton also said that he has a minor groin operation which has fixed a problem he has had for the past 2 years which took 5% off him. Not only has he recovered fully but he is back to leading the pack again. Says he has talked to Ayresy about playing further up the ground, now that he is fitter, possibly on a wing. Personally I think he will play a variety of roles including wing, half-forward, on the ball and maybe at times from a pocket.
So Brett is going for Reilly as his big improver and may well be right. I'm still sticking with Hentschel and Rutten (other than Mattner).

I'll be dissapointed if the guy taken at #12 in a very strong draft doesn't turn out to be a real quality player. Maybe not next year, but I hope this guy becomes an important player in seasons to come.

A Sturt fan at work tells me he has "it". His performances at reserves level has convinced her he will be one to watch. With Brodie gone, he just might get more game time with the seniors this year.

Thanks for that macca, thats good news for sure.

To see the Birdman flying higher than before and with more consistently is definitely a sight we'd all love to see. We've all been saying how Carey's presence at the club would free up Stevo, and I'd like to think that the same sorta thing will also occur with Brett (even though he's not targeted as much as Stevo was/will be, of course).

He's pretty much doomed to obscurity and hackdom if Sturt supporters reckon he's got "it". ;)

If that proves to be the case then perhaps we'll just leave him on the list for 4 to 5 years like another AFL club does and call him a "project player" :p

Personally I am going with Schuback as the one to make an impact.

I have heard others say that about Reilly. John Reid made a similar predicticton a month or so back.

Things are lookin rosy for the young breed with so many touted as stepping up.

I want to see Rutten perform with the Crows on a regular basis.
Whatever " it " happens to be, I think hes got it.

Most of all, Id like to see Ayresy step up a tad, just enough to cream the scum in the showdowns. Im certain to be sure the players are capable; plus, he derserves a premiership flag

Yeah I want Ayresy to step up too and start giving the finger more often!

I've seen Schuback play a few times this year for Westies in the SANFL and he played well every time I saw him. He certainly looks like he will make the grade and he is that type of player who grabs any opportunity with both hands.

Barring injuries, the hardest part for him (and Reilly) will be to get into the team due to the added depth this year.

To quote topjars

This is definitely our best list since 97 and 98. Hope it proves to be our best ever!! ;)

Thinking about which player, out of those on crows list who have not yet played an AFL game for Crows, is most likely to have the most impact in the side in 2003, I would look to see who was closest to the grade. Who played the best at the highest (non-AFL) level in 2002?

That would be Mattner, Rutten, Hentschel & Bock wouldn't it? Those are the closest to making the grade.

If any of those does make the grade & play games for Crows in 2003, I have no idea if that would qualify them as "biggest improvers" or not.

This is so true as in previous years we have had too many players who were either not quite up to AFL standard on on our list or too young to break through. We seem to have culled most of this "deadwood" making competition for spots tight this year.

As to which youngster will step, I think the fact that we have quite a few which have already been mentioned is a real positive. When else have we had such an exciting group coming through? If a couple of these step up & become consistent contributers next season (which is likely), then it will go a long way to getting the further improvement we need to challenge for the flag. Can't wait for the 2003 season to begin!

Don't know about as we redrafted Shirley & put Skipworth on to the rookie list so i think the Crows are still showing a bit of a soft spot for the SA Eagles,

On young Reilly have only seen him play on tv a couple of times & he has shown he has the skills just needs to step up to the pace of AFL footy plus bulk up a bit more & i guess that will come with natural developement & work in the gym,

Also, you can add Bock who was upgraded to the main list too.
