Hey Guys
i don't post often but am an avid follower.A decision will be finalized tomorrow at 9am that 'will be good for the club and good for the player'. That's all I have so sweet dreams tonight!
well, that's not at all helpful.

13 for Broughton is good, but will 13 get us Shaw?
Brisbane have pick 8 and are likely to be on the lookout for a tall forward.
In fact looking at the current draft order, either the Lions or the Tigers could beat us in the hunt for Shaw

There is also Janczh, and possibly Stringer who would be taken before Shaw. But who knows. Shaw wasn't rated in the top 20 on AFL,com the other day. Wallace rates Membrey very highly as well. plus there is a tall back called Cleary. It's a lottery but we may be able to pick up one of them.

Especially with pick 13 which I think we will get.

Does that mean we are getting a player or that it will be good for Broughton as well. More uncertainty.
Enough, I'm going to bed.

So we need to make room in the list and it is starting to look like we may not get much if anything for Roberton.
So how about if we were able to trade robbo to a Vic club for a slight second round upgrade (our pick 40 for pick 33-36) then offload this to GC with broughts for 13?
Pretty fair I reckon.

Man, It's Jaksch, and Clurey. Was it you that also said Rovat today?? :p

Not a single person here has mentioned GC's plethora of banked compo picks, there'd be a few end of 1st round picks in there wouldn't there? My money's on one of them.

You can slice and dice the draft however you want, and there has been some compromised drafts lately, but let's look at players picked in the 10-20 range. Players better than Broughton:

2011: Too early to tell, the GWS picks look OK
2010: Probably too early, but so far I wouldn't take any of them ahead of Broughton apart from Lynch on KPP potential.
2009: Jetta, Menzel, Fyfe
2008: Sidebottom, Shuey, maybe Davis
2007: Dangerfield, Rioli, Taylor, Ward
2006: Brown, Frawley, Riewoldt
2005: maybe Birchall, maybe Varcoe, maybe Hurn
2004: nobody

I'll stop there. Basically you have a 30% chance of picking someone better than Broughton with pick 13. So in that respect, people claiming he isn't worth that pick ... simply isn't true. People are misguided in assessing the real worth of late first round picks.

I'd reluctantly take #13 for Broughton, simply because in the real world of trading, draft picks seem to be vastly overrated. But if we end up losing pick 17, then it would be an absolutely horrible trade.

Good point. Could possibly be the compensation pick they received from Geelong for Caddy. End of first round I think it was.

I really rate Broughton but if we can get a shot at two 1st round KPF's we should go for it.

Wont happen but could you imagine getting Jakcsh at #13 and Shaw at #17. ;)

More likely Shaw at #13 and someone like Clurey at #17, though knowing our recruiting team they probably want that second 1st rounder to use on another midfielder.

we got Neale at #58 and Sutcliffe #72ish, de Boer and Broughton with late rookie picks so it can happen with the draft likely to go fairly deep. Also shifting pick 17 to 13 could make all the difference to getting the player your after

To be fair Neale and Sutcliffe haven't yet shown they are worth their picks yet.

Gold Coast compo pick wouldn´t be able to be used until next year though right? I prefer two first rounders for use this year.

Pick 13 and Pick 17 would be great. Would love Mason Shaw and Stringer with those two picks. Stringer being able to play the Pav role of a forward and a mid.

Imagine Stringer and Mora on the same team if both lived up to their potential!

But he didn't beat matchwinners regularly. His best game in that regard was against Steve Johnson. Who still got two goals, but Broughton beat well in the last.

He's a good player. It's rare that good players in the small defender role earn more than a second rounder. Especially at his age. I wouldn't say there's anything about him that makes Broughton worthy of a pick in the teens.

No.

Broughton consistantly beat Johnson, hands down on most occasions, and he did it to other players also.

You're right in a kind of technical sense, but I'm willing to put good money on Neale justifying his selection. No doubt in my mind he'll make it as a 150+ game player. Sutcliffe I'd want to wait a bit longer though.

On topic, I think we've got to give up the fantasy of getting pick 13 (and keeping 17). There's no way that GC would drop out of the first round, just can't see that happening.

I'm a big Broughton fan, but anyone suggesting pick 13 as a straight swap is dreaming. A small/medium defender yet to play 100 games who turns 27 next year, and appears on the outer with his new coach isn't worth a pick in the teens.

I reckon sutcliffe has shown more than neale. Neale may well be good, but other than the nab cup I though he was underwhelming
