"Broughton played 68 games for the Dockers since being chosen with pick No.79 in the 2009 national draft."

That just goes to show how much effort the journalists there are putting in. He was upgraded from the rookie list at pick 79 in 2009, but we drafted him at rookie pick 74 in 2008, which was the 152nd active pick in that draft.

Hopefully the journalist got more than that wrong and it's not pick 37.

Surely theres another trade to be revealed, Roberton and pick 37 for Richmond's pick 32?
Yeah im still waiting for something like this, probably more unrealistic would be roberton and 37 for collingwoods 21. I'm pretty dissapointed in this trade as everyone else is. I guess when you have got a tight list as we do these days there has to be sacrifices. Broughts said he wanted to go so they helped him get to where he wanted to go. Thats the best way i can look at it although still dissapointed.
With his contract being back heavy we have even more room in our salary cap now, do you think we are in Tippets ear now that he may be forced in to the draft? bit of a long shot but what would everyones thoughts be on using pick 17 on Tippet?

Not happy unless there is a secondary reason like cap space - extra money for McPhee contract?. As the defensive forward role yes I can see others like Mellington coming in next year to do that and they figured he would struggle for games but I would give him games ahead of Ibbo at present.

I would of been much happier with swapping 17 for 13 plus pick 37 - would of given us a better chance at the KPF.

Get over it ! Broughton was a crab, not in the best 22.

we are paying him a lot of coin next year when he is not going to play under Lyon.

pick 37 is the new pick 20 in this years draft....move on tree huggers.

How is he not in the best 22 after playing 68 games in 4 years?

This is a joke. I've been avoiding this thread because I've never liked the idea of trading him.

I can't believe Broughton has been traded while a freaking crab like Ibbo is still on our list. Broughton is best 22 for me...and we gave that away for PICK 37!?

I like how all season people on this board have been saying 'this player clearly doesn't fit in with Ross Lyon's defensiev game style' whenever someone gets dropped. But now, that excuse doesn't work because people actually liked Broughton.

Just because he has been best 22 in the past few years, it doesn't mean he was going to be best 22 next year. We did pretty well in the second half of this season without him. And now we've added Pearce, have the prospect of a returning Morabito and new kids earning their spots - Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Crozier. Maybe not direct swaps, but a shuffle could easily Greg missing out. Especially as Forster will be twice the player he ever was.

I thought he would be worth something closer to the #30 mark, but oh well. Tough calls have to be made, and I'm sure Ross didn't just do it on a whim.

I think pick #79 in the national draft would be when we last drafted him ie. when he was upgraded from the rookie list to the main list.

But you right we took him in the 2009 rookie draft (which occurs in 2008)

He is just a small defender (not like they don't exist on the list already)

freo now has 3 picks in the top 40, of the 40 best kids going around we have a go at 3 of them!!

teams like WC have no picks inside 40
Geelong/hawthorn only 1 inside 40

we arnt going to use Broughton under Lyon get a pick and go to the well.

This and people all year saying that we need to get more KPP than flankers of which we have an abundance and we move one on to get a draft pick but that could get a decent KPP and everyone wants to keep the flankers now.

There have been decent KPP players selected around that mark such as Sam Reid for one and if we can get a player like Colledge for him its definitely a win.

I highly doubt salary cap has anything to do with it given the amount we had at the start of the year and heard rumblings from the start of the year that the coaching staff weren't a fan of Broughton's and the way he went about it.

What like Ibbotson, Duffield, Spurr...? Surely Broughton is better than all three of these players?

He may be a better player but he does play on his own terms a lot which won't help him get a game under Lyon and doesn't play as tall as Ibbotson, i do agree with you about Duffield though but Duffield would have no currency elsewhere...

Well said. In the end Broughton was surplus to needs, a decent player but we have plenty of his type and were playing fine without him.

If we take a KPP in the draft at this pick I will be very happy however over the last 4 yrs we have had 20 picks in the ND and have only taken 1 KPP (Houghton) so I won't be surprised if we don't select a KPP here.

Ten years of pick 37:

2000Guy Richards23
2001Leigh Montagna169*
2002Brent Staker139*
2003Thomas Roach11
2004Mark Le Cras100*
2005Jack Anthony51
2006Todd Goldstein62*
2007Scott Thompson77*
2008Zac Clarke 36*
2009Jamie Macmillan33*
Asterisks are for those not finished. Fellas from 2010 / 11 are too early in career for value judgment.

I think most people would be ok with broughton leaving, especially given that we played our best footy last year without him.... But pick 37 is a joke. I just can not get over that wellingham gets pick 17 and broughton pick 37....... I can deal with us keeping guys like ibbotson duffield and spurr, I can't deal with getting bent over the barrel again.
