Obviously not if we just traded him

Exactly. People need to stop living in the past. Broughton clearly wasn't best 22 anymore, and that can only be a good thing as it shows just how far our list has come in the past year. We have more than enough medium defenders without him, many of who are better defensive players in my opinion.

There are plenty of positives to come out of this move. A hugely unrealistic belief of him being worth a first round pick isn't allowing anyone to see them though.

Thinking about this some more.
Spurr, Chrichton etc have no trade currency so although Broughton is probably a better player than both the idea of trading Broughton is not inherently wrong, if what we lose in keeping these guys on the list ahead of Broughton is exceeded by what we gain in the trade.
On face value we have gained not very much turning a 3rd round pick into a 2nd round pick, so unless Bond is a complete idiot there must be some other gain for us. It could be salary, some grand plan to snare another player, some personal issue to do with Broughton's attitude or injury, something surely must be behind this as others have said? Either that or they actually rate him lower than Spurr/Chrichton?

I was open to trading Broughton - just fell that 37 is unders.

Waiting and hoping this pick can be used coupled with Roberton for a higher pick.

To be honest I have never really cared what eagles supporters think.

There are probably a number of reasons why Greg is gone but maybe he wanted to leave and with GCS holding pick two in the pre season draft we just had to take what we could get.

Rubbish he was pushed.
We took 4 weeks to get screwed over, I wonder what we would have done if we were rushed.

Well we were however there would have been jack there, now we have our prerequisite 3 draft picks all in the first and second round

In reality, without a compromised draft and compo picks and two extra teams etc this is 2 picks in the 3rd round, in a draft that drops off in quality after pick 20 or so. We are going to need some very clever drafting to salvage anything out of this.

Have to move pieces around to get a premiership, dose of reality needed here..
Good post - sensible comment

Apart from the obvious shi%%y pick - even though it does classify as a second round pic, Im ok with it.

Surplus of needs, puts the other backliners on notice (Suban, Ibbo, Spurr), opportunities their for newbies in Forster and Mitchie..

Sad to see him and I enjoyed watching him in purple, but bigger picture thinking is required. Best of luck GB

Lets just hope 2 out of the 3 drafted will be KPP...

You can use the term "rounds" to make yourself feel better but it is still picks 37 and 40. Not exactly great "second round" picks.

17, 37, 40 is still better than 17, 40, 60 (even though I do think we got unders for Broughton)

17 ,40 and broughton is better than 17, 37, and 60. We could of gotten rid of worse players than broughton for pick 37 or we could have just not used 60 at all.

Ten years of pick 37:

2000Guy Richards23
2001Leigh Montagna169*
2002Brent Staker139*
2003Thomas Roach11
2004Mark Le Cras100*
2005Jack Anthony51
2006Todd Goldstein62*
2007Scott Thompson77*
2008Zac Clarke 36*
2009Jamie Macmillan33*
Asterisks are for those not finished. Fellas from 2010 / 11 are too early in career for value judgment.

I see what you did there....

Actually I am amazed they all played AFL games and at the quality of some (Montagna, Le Cras, Clarke).

I love all the "he was pushed" "we were robbed" comments on here.

Let me play devil's advocate for a minute.
How do any of us on here know that Greg was not told at the end of the season that he will have to fight for a spot in the 22 as he was considered by RTB & the match committee as being borderline, with some young guys vying for his position in midfiled, and the back 6 pretty much settled.
Greg went away over the break, considered his position & decided he would prefer to go to a team that he would easily slot into the 22 week in week out. Then came back to the club and asked to be moved on?

Not one single person on here knows the exact scenario that has played out in Greg being traded, it is all doomsday conjecture.

Thanks for your services to the club Greg, you were a solid player for the FFC, clearly will be missed by many. Wish you all the best in your career.:thumbsu:

We can all say we should've got more from the trade but a player is only worth what other clubs are prepared to give up...We have an abundance of HB's/medium defenders and he has been injury prone of late which may have had something to do with it.

He's contract was back loaded so we do save some good cap space by not having to pay him next year (PA didn't want anything to do with it). Still disappointed we lost him and was hopeful of a better pick but we have to back the recruiters in to find 3 good players with the picks and I dont think we were using 60 anyway so no loss there...Don;t forget Broughts was our final rookie pick so there will be still some good talent there at 37 its just finding the right player.

Surely @ 37 for Broughton and 60 they could have shipped him out last few weeks easily. Our second round is 40 so not really much of a upgrade.

Yes he may not have brought in or fitted the new plan but he's not worth giving away plus extra's.

It cant be salary pressures given Cloke and Goddard suppossed moves if so then theres Reg's green light to have a go @ Freo. it shouldnt happen.

I don't think I'm required on this one. The club has done all the hard work for me.

Perhaps I should ask for a trade.

I'm looking forward to either Bond or Lloyd try to justify this pathetic trade in the media later today. Trading Broughton for peanuts isn't going to help us win a Premiership next year. Chris Dawes is apparently twice the player Greg is.

A pick upgrade from 60 to 37??? What the actual ****. Under-rated by his own club.

Mixed feelings with this trade... I shall wait until trade period is over before having a cry on here.

And nor do you. The bottom line is we traded a best 22 player for pick 37 and the Eagles gave up pick 17 for Wellingham. Someone has gotten it wrong here. Three good players in the draft will make it all better, but they are under a lot of pressure now to get it right, because by even the most pro-Freo standards we gave away a very good player for a very poor return.
