The way I see it, is that there will be a lot of positions up for grabs next year. The kids we have will really have to earn their spot in the team and will not be given too much of a free run based on potential as with sides like the Hawks.

This all goes well for a good competitive unit, it reminds me of the old John Kennedy/Yabbie Jeans philosophy.

With the surplus of talls I hope Laids tries Watt in some different roles.

Watt was originall drafted as full forward, so the forward line is possibility.

He is the way I think the team should line up:

B. Makepeace, Hay, Perry
HB. Smith, Brown, Firrito
C. Wells, Harris, B.Rawlings
HF. Co.Jones, J.Rawlings, Grant
F. Harding, Watt/Ch.Jones, Thompson
R. Hale, Simpson, Harvey

INT Petrie, Archer, Trotter, Sinclair

EMG Pratt, Grima, Urch, Sansbury, Rocca, McConnell, McIntosh, Watt/Ch.Jones

Not a bad side, although I think I would rather see Brown pushed forward rather than Watt.

Might be because he didn't want to be there, but J. Rawlings has some work to do to prove he is in the 22 after his efforts with the Bulldogs

While I didn't see many VFL games live (had to put up with Phil Cleary's crap a lot) - I detected a couple of worrying signs with both Smith and Trotter when they went back to the Borough after a stint with the big boys. I hope I'm wrong but they, especially Smith, looked a bit lazy and loose on occasions. Reminded me of Sinclar with some of his accountablity.

I still don't know whether Chad Jones did enough in the VFL to justify a spot ahead of the aging Savaloy - he will need to have a big pre-season. Thought Urch showed a bit when he got his chance and was impressed with the way Pratt went about it in the last VFL final after he missed out on the Power elimination final, especially since he was pushed forward in that game.

Hale was drafted from Qld as a marking forward, while things change it might be worth trying Hamish in the ruck and giving Hale another go forward, despite not doing that well this year when given the chance.

The good news is there are many options and the depth seems to be getting better - it's a good position to be in - bring on 2006

No offence Helmie & Speedy, but if the likes of Urch, Perry, and 'Dubya' Smith (or Watt, Firrito, Makey and Brown for that matter) start on the ground with Arch languishing on the bench come the start of Rd 1 I'll get the kit off and do a lap of Aami Stadium at quarter time.

Although he had pretty much his best season ever this year, Laidley sees age as a major factor in the way the team goes (Kingy and Stevens for instance). There is no doubt he will play a major role at the club, its just i dont think he will play full games anymore. We even saw glimpses of this, this year where Arch was rested on numerous occasions.

Fair point Helmie, but I still think his presence and intimidation factor will still ensure he spends the majority of his time on the field - particularly in the heat of the opening minutes.

I like the look of Smith, Urch, Trotter, Perry et al, but they've got a lot to prove and they're going to have to work damn hard to push Arch out of a spot in the starting 18. It's more your Stevens and Picione types that should be concerned IMO.

The other thing Laidley has shown is that nobody gets a spot in the team handed to them on a silver platter.
