Can anyone please give me an idea on how Brown went yesterday. Reading most of your reports, which by the way are excellent, no one seems to mention Brown, and yet afl.com.au has Brown named in the best.

Was servicable. Much like last year. Spent time in defence, on the ball, and in the ruck. Very versitile player physically, but IMO JYD cant keep using him as a spare parts player. Seems lost at times. Must find him a role.

Its not that he doesn't do much, its just that for someone of his size and strength, he gets the ball in the wrong positions where he isnt as damaging. He doesn't take enough contested marks around the 50's IMO, but he is able to find space and run with the ball through the midfield. He is smart, seems to be a rover in a CHF's body.

I'll say this til I'm blue in the face - he's no good.
Too slow for defence, too small for ruck, not good enough overhead to play in attack.
He has no role to play.
He was a good junior footballer because he had a mature body and could use that to dominate.
Now he's playing against other strong bodies and has nothing else to fall back on.
His disposal is sound, but he is slow and only going to get slower. That is why Freo was happy to trade him.
I would love to be proved wrong, as he is a great bloke, but I can't see how he can turn his career around.

Weird type of player. Doesn't look too bad in the ruck I thought. Perhaps later in the year we may see Hale or Corey take the hitouts with Brown doing the around the grounds work.

With the younger guys like Mc Intosh, Shore and Jones having a more dfined role, could find himself in a tough spot, but still in our best 22 at the moment.

I must disagree with Scottywiper,

I feel Leigh Brown has worked hard on his fitness, and even though he may not be incredibly fast, he has worked on his endurance and is quite capable of playing four quarters of competitive football at AFL level, which I find more important than acceleration.

With our inability to find depth over the ground, I feel Brown's ability to be versitile is incredibly under rated by the supporters, but obviously not by the media nor the coaching staff.

Brown can drop back and play infront of the Fullback as he did against Neitz and Lloyd last season succesfully, Backup Ruckman as he did succesfully against Darcy, midfield tagger as he did against Kouta in round 5 in 2003, and push forward with a good penetrating kick on goal.

I think also off field Brown speaks very well and has great leadership qualities. Personally I have a lot of time for Leigh Brown and believe he is a strong contributer to the club.

No question about that Benno, his off field attributes are strong.
I just doubt his value as a player...Freo weren't disappointed to see the back of him despite the off field qualities he possessed...
Again, hope I am wrong, but will be following him with interest this year and fear the worst...

Tend to agree with your assessment of Brown there Scotty, you raise some valid points, but I am more optimistic about his future. I think he will take a while to reach the heights than many expect of him.

No question, he is finding it hard to play against men for the reasons you mention, but his body isn't fully mature yet. You can imagine that he will get some muscle definition into himself eventually, and then may become a more than serviceable backman. If Prestigiacomo can make it with his speed (or lack of it) I don't see why Brown can't.

Sure, he doesn't have the same athletisism as Watt, but I still see a place for him in our back half, especially after Colbert and/or Arch go.

i agree with vlad and scotty. I don't think he will ever be a star that many think he will be, but a serviceable backman in time, and I don't think he's as versatile as everyone makes him out to be.

Brown needs to get some goal kicking into his game at least 1 or 2 per match to hurt the opposition because at the moment they don't give a stuff about him, thats why he gets the ball all out on his own.

Also needs to crack a few bones from time to time like his namesake up north.

Brown reminds me of the Fridge, except he doesn't kick anywhere near the number of goals he did.

He looks clumsy. He is not a giant yet Hale looked to have alot more mobility, flexibility and the ability to take a contested mark.

He came over here in the deal with Bell from memory, he has been here for a few years and really has not given us one game where he even appeared to have had an outstanding game. At best he is servicable.

He has no presence, does not use his size or bulk to his advantage. He may be very talented but at times when I watch him he seems like is in a very bad position most of the time. Either he is not reading the ball or the play very well or the rest of the team avoid going towards him.

Either way, he is a kind of 'floating' type player that has very little purpose in the team. He does not really hold down any position. He goes forward and doesnt do much, goes back and usually gets the 4th worst tall forward, helps out in the ruck and does his best ruckwork when he is not the designated ruckman.

He really needs to turn his career around this year and show he has purpose. He seems like a great guy but there is only so long you can remain in a team as a ghost. He needs presence. He needs to find a key position where he can compete well in.

He needs some mongrel in him, some hardness. He could have purpose if he was a brutal physical type of crunch player even if he does not get alot of the ball.

If he doesn't do something he will be on the Shane Clayton-ish heap in 2-3 years and will get games irregularly as he makes way for young kids who show promise in key positions.

Tad harsh there TAS. Browny is only in his second year with us and as a big bloke he's going to take his time developing. What would help is if he got to play one position for a while. He looks best filling the hole down back, then bursting off halfback. But he does need to work on throwing his bulk into packs and not drifting in and out of games. I think he can prove good value if he gets a chance to settle. He's big, not injury prone and shows a bit. I think we need to wait and see where he is at next year - like half our team it seems.

And if Bruce tears us up one more time.....

Leigh Brown's only missed 3 games in four years...so somebody sees something in him. He's probably got a few games out of necessity at Freo, but that is a good record for a guy who's just turned 22. I reckon in time he'll be capable of filling a key back post for us.

I think like a lot of our youngsters, the potential is obvious....but there are quite a few flaws that need ironing out. Might take a little time, so it's a good thing us supporters are such a patient and understanding bunch!

At the risk of sounding like a smart ar*se Tas, just a couple of corrections.

Browny had his first year with us last year, we traded pick 15 for him which we got for Bryon off Port, the deal also included the swap of swap of Cochrane for M. Stevens.

In the Bell deal we got picks 6 and 8 in the 2000 draft which turned out to be Dylan Smith and Danny Motlop as well as having Sinclair traded to us.

I guess I've been pretty hard on Browny as well as you, but in his defence he is really still only a developing player in the same category as Harris and Motlop as I think he was only drafted a year earlier in 1999 at number 5.

All his football at the Dockers was at Fullback where he was constantly pumped as the Dockers were crap and this could have well restricted his development. I think Dean has let him loose around the ground in order to give him a chance to learn the game.

As for Fridge he had to Clubs (Syd and Bears) before he came to us on his last chance so he took quite a while to hit his straps

Cheers

Ahh, thats right, Sinclair. By all means correct me where I am incorrect.

I thought Brown might have been earlier but I stand corrected. Granted he may develop to be a great player but I just did not see alot to inspire me. With most players you see the signs early on before they turn to magic.

He will need a Cinderalla type of transformation in my opinion, but nothing is beyond possible.

Hey, it would make me really happy if he plays this year and does really well. What I just said was my observation of seeing him play.

I love all our players but I feel many are contributing alot less than the same old players.

We just cannot afford to go through this year seeing Harvey, Grant and Simpson in our best three players game after game because if they are and the other players do not do their part then we will struggle.

To move forwards we need to be critical of where the weak links are in the team. Yeah, I hope Brown becomes a great player but at the moment he is still part of the weak link in our armour.

He is not alone either. But, I guess it is a new year and I should give him time to show if he has improved.

I virtually agree with everything your've said and yes we do need a few of the young blokes to show a bit this year particularly Harris, Motlop, Watson, S.Harvey, Hale etc aswell as continued improvement from Cory Jones, Watt, Brown, J.Clayton, Harding etc

Couldn't agree with me more on that one.

After defending him to you for 2 years im starting to see your point of view.He has a mind of a five year old boy footy wise. For him not to shephard Grants goal yesterday was a disgrace. He goes at 70-80% a game and i think he believes that is good enough. We as a footy club are in lots of trouble as there are about 10 passengers with him.

You've always been a bit slow on the uptake.:D

Lacks a ticker to play AFL. There are a few of his type that are being carried along and it's more about the coach / match committee that refuses to acknowledge this and continues to play him that I have a bigger issue with.

One 'second effort' input over 4 quarters is the only real impact he had yesterday. Should be banished to the two's immediately.
