He has always been bad, but this season it has gotten worse. Something has to give, this is driving me to distraction. Forget about Eddie McGuire's Collingwood bias, at least he was professional enough to give a bit the other way. Did anyone else notice how disappointed and deadpan Bruce was when calling the Doggies goals in the last quarter last night?

"Oh, and he puts it through" or "..and the Dogs have sealed it"

Compared with the more typical Bruce verbal ejaculation when Essendon had their run going earlier:

"Davey! Davey!!! DAVEY!!!! HE PUTS IT THROUGH!!! HE'S CLEVER!! HE'S SPECIAL!!!"

I can't give you verbatim quotes, I don't have that good a memory and I don't have a copy of the game.
What I do have is an over-riding impression:

Bruce = Total Essendon Fanboy


Make him sit in the corner and have a think about it, channel 7. He is woeful at the moment.

You're delusional. He'd do the "Davey, DAVEY..." thing even if it was the Demons version. There's just some players that get callers excited.

Fair enough, within their respective commentaries,
Walls leans to Carlton
Eddie to the Pies
Rex to the Tigers
Quarters to Hawthorn
etc.

All of these get noticeably over-excited when their own team gets on a roll. But there is no way that McAvaney has any identifiable bias. Like Cometti, they're purely objective.

Bruce was most certainly up and about last night about the Bombers. When Davey kicked that goal in the second qtr IIRC, reckon Bucks might have had a mess in his lap.

I don't even get that exited when daisy, leon or ____ing Dids has kicked a pearler from the boundary. He is a disgrace.

They sponsered the Essendon website. For a number of years channel seven was splattered all over Essendon's website.

Bruce's pro Essendon commentary is NOTHING new. He is a disgrace. But put two and two together please it isn't hard. When Essendon were sponsored by seven it was worse than it even is now.

i think almost everyone watching that game thought essendon deserved to win, they were unlucky with injuries and ended up losing my a lot more then they deserved... any neutral supporter would have been cheering on the bombers at that point, they were well against the odds with no lloyd or lucas played a very gutsy performance but just had terrible luck...

its the aussie way, support the underdogs

No, I'm not delusional. And I only used Davey as an obvious example. As I said previously, I don't have an audiographic (?) memory, nor do I have a copy of the telecast to refer to for verbatim quotes. Surely he just likes commentating memorable exciting football
We play lots of exciting football, & our matches tend to be end-to-end attack

I can see why you'd prefer to commentate that, why you'd get excited over that compared to Sydney (or to a lesser extent) Collingwood or North

Bernie Quinlan. An excellent special comments man who only had 4-5 years on channel 7 before the bastards decided not to keep him. MASSIVE loss to commentary!

If you knew what you were talking about you'll learn that he resigned from Channel 7, to persue his coaching career which saw him coach the Lions back in 1995 for part of the season.
