Pretty close I'd say, both are very good players but haven't quite delivered on a consistent basis. Gibbs is probably more damaging at his best, but Sidebottom has delivered in big games.

Pretty clear its bias. You would have a point if Carlton played in a Grand Final and Gibbs performed poorly. As it is now that hasnt occured so people can only vote on what theyve seen.

I think the Swan Bartel comparison was a really good one. Many voted Swan for consistency of performance whilst others went for Bartel due to his performances on the big stage. Both good reasons.

I think the real wank here is the "but Steele dominated a final" idea being the be-all and end-all. The same thinking led Pies posters to rate him higher than Beams going into the season following the flag win, which I thought was just madness, as although Beams' finals games were below average, he was the better player in my estimations. And I think it's fair to say that's the way it's played out to this point too.

To put this factor into context in regarding a Gibbs comparison, Sidebottom played in as many finals in his first year with the Pies than Gibbs has his entire career. And none of them any better than the best final Gibbs has played. By the time Sidey had his dominant game, he'd played twice as many finals as Gibbs; and overall he's played in over 4 times the amount of finals as Gibbs has. Having played in a team of premiership quality proffers him a far greater chance to achieve this than what's Gibbs has been presented with.

So if you want to rate Sidey higher based on his finals games, then go for it, i have no problem with that; but it's just pointless to dismiss anyone else's opinion as wank because they don't agree with, as I consider it, your flawed criteria. Perhaps if when the sample size grows, this is consistent over their career, it will begin to have greater significance; but at this point it's kinda of a meh means of differentiation in my books.

Steele. The only aspect of the game Gibbs has over Sidebottom is that he is a better kick.

Collingwood use Toovey for stopping roles and prefer to use the more skilful players in a ball winning capacity. Bryce has done some excellent tagging jobs and plays the loose man in defence well. However he is yet to prove he can hold down a position as a midfielder despite being recruited as one. Sidebottom has consistently played well in the midfield from day one, something Gibbs is yet to be able to say he has done.
