My thoughts? Happy to oblige.

Carlton are still rubbish; Collingwood were just rubbisher.

But in all seriousness...

Collingwood - Whether or not Buckley can coach, the biggest problem I can see is lack of continuity in our playing stocks. It seems every year we turn over key and experienced players whom the football department have lost faith in. Take for example this year - Brown, Frost, Marsh and Williams. None of them duds, three of them getting regular games at new clubs, and those four had probably played more games in Collingwood's backline than anyone over the past two years. As a result we are relying on warhorses such as Goldsack and blooding new players such as Schade, which is all well and good occasionally but not year on year.

Carlton - This is the first time in 20 years that they are going about a rebuild the right way. My opinion on Carlton between 2008 and 2015 has proven to have been spot on despite the Carlton faithful on this site being blinded by multiple false dawns - you know we're coming, one kick from a Prelim, Judd's our saviour, Malthouse is our saviour, etc. etc. They now have some quality on their list and it will be interesting to see if they can be developed into a legitimate contender for the first since 2001. They will be nuisance value for the next couple of years in winning 6 to 9 games before their time may come. They still have a lot of gaps to fill but have a strong yet still shallow core with the likes of Cripps, Weitering and Docherty. And SPS, my god he can play.

You missed Marchbank, Curnow, Silvagni (he is better than Smedts), Williamson, Graham (starting to come good now), Plowman (becoming a general in defence directing play). Young Fisher, Cunningham, McKay, Kerr, Macreadie will all be fine role players they're just too young.

There is a good group of kids and another three in top 30 will be good for us.

He's had a few poorer performances by his standards, but I don't think it's permanent or a sign that he's "done" as a good player and should be discarded.

I reckon he's been in the bottom 8 players for Collingwood for the past two seasons. Classic case of made to look better when there were star players around him perhaps.

Was comfortably among our top 5 players last season, basically playing the same sort of footy he had for 3-4 years prior. He's definitely down this year in terms of impact, but certainly not bottom 8. I'm really not too concerned about him, to be honest.

I think people have a misconception on the type of player he is or should be, and judge him based on that. He's a linking wingman, whose main assets are fitness and workrate, mainly running between the arcs. He's not a forward, and hasn't spent any real consistent time playing as one for a number of years, and he's not an extractor type either. The goals he does get are usually due to his hard running and knowing where to be at the right time.

In all seriousness, it's bizarre how invested non-Collingwood people are in this.

Pretty sad and pathetic too that the desire to see Buckley "get his" all stems from some apparent deserved "come-uppance" for him leaving the Brisbane Bears (a club going nowhere, that nobody gave a shit about at the time) way back in 1993, or the supposed "knifing" of Mick Malthouse (who most people think is a complete campaigner anyway).

I don't think that is the case at all - a coach who is under performing is always going to attract this type of interest.

Non-Collingwood people have been death-riding Buckley since he took the job. Let's not pretend he's just now getting criticism, or just getting the same treatment anyone else would. There's been a fair segment of the footy public willing him to fail and praying for his sacking for many years.

Hasn't Hardwick been in this position before and wasn't he given more time. You could hardly say his reign has been anymore successful and the Tigers could have easily pulled the plug.

You don't sack coaches unless you're getting thrashed and it's clear the players aren't listening.

Yeah true, but Buckley was never particularly liked as a player nor as a bloke by the average AFL fan - hence the FIGJAM nickname. The golden boy of Collingwood controversely got handed a premiership list at the biggest sporting club in Australia, it's a huge story from the get go no matter what club you support.

Gun player. Didn't get the talk about him not being liked. He was just a very serious dude about his footy.

He hasn't cracked it at as a coach. Last 6 years has to go down as a failure. Especially given the side he had when he took the reigns from Mick

He took us to a Prelim 2 years after our flag which is pretty standard. Unless you're Hawthorn or Brisbane (2001/2004) no one really makes gf after gf.
He got us 5th in home and away in 2013 and that premiership list got thrashed in our first final. It needed a rejig.

Collingwood is a high profile club and the circumstances in which Buckley took over were interesting, which no doubt drew attention and - you're right - created Buckley as a target for some. However, that should not dismiss the criticism Buckley is facing at the moment.

A basic comparison of Buckley and Hardwick's W/L record shows their trends are polar opposite (Rich '14/'16 season being the exception). However, they both started their coaching careers at opposite ends of the table so odds on it was probably going to end up something like this.

No, I didn't miss any of them.

The three I mentioned will be bona fide stars of the competition and have done enough to give the neutral observer that confidence.

As god as Marchbank has been, it is still early days and let's see if he can sustain it.

The others you mentioned, to be honest they could end up being 40 game players or 200 game players. None of them have shown anywhere near enough to tell me they'll be around for the next 10 years.

This is a carbon copy of the mistake we made when we got Daisy and Liam Jones and we all know what happened to the bloke that made those deals.

Pies are in the exact same position we were in Micks last days with a few good players around a heap of mediocre plodders and god help em if they lose Pendles who carries this team on his own virtually. Taylor Adams / Treloar types while being solid players they are no guns and both have shocking disposal that Bucks thought would be the missing pieces to a Top 4 tilt but it has not worked and that is not mentioning the Wells and Mayne deals.

Pies need to do a FULL rebuild but right now but it is hard cause the above blokes mentioned are in the new stages of mega deals which will sting in the future.

Bucks and Ed have created this mess and until they admit where they are currently list wise ( Which i doubt as both are to pig headed )the Pies will be forever in a free fall to the bottom of the ladder and i feel sorry for Pendles as he is a champion and sensational footballer but just surrounded by ineptness all around him on and off the field.

Pies are going to be in a world of hurt for the next 5+ years if they don't start making the hard decisions and how many good 18-20yo kids do they have coming through that look to be future guns? As i cannot name a single player and their drafting from 2013 onwards has been nothing short of deplorable.

Change the years in that link from 2016 down past the last 3 or so years and you struggle to find 2 decent prospects that are playing today and doing well.

Would the reaction still be the same if he won the game against Carlton?

We are rebuilding and were 4 goal under dogs but in saying that ladder position rarely matters when we play each other and it is always a 50/50 game most times as we just lift when playing one another.

This is the Pies problem IMO and will be for the next 5+ years......

That is seriously disgraceful and sets clubs back years and trust me i know all about it as a Carlton supporter. Buckley was involved heavily in drafting and besides being a poor match day coach the above is really telling.

Maybe only 3 players from that whole crop will play 150+ games.

Someone gets it.

I'm a bit sick of this myth that Collingwood were or should have been still "on the up" towards the end of 2011. The 2011 PF was a pretty clear end-point to that era. Malthouse and the players had nothing left to give after that match. Go watch the last few minutes on YouTube, with Malthouse with tears in his eyes at the end. I for one went into watching the GF next week expecting to lose, and being ok with it.

I feel results would have been the same if Mick had stayed on, but he likely wouldn't have been as forward trading out and retiring "his boys", which would have seen us looking very middle-aged and mediocre list-wise going forward.
At the end of 2011, even though Collingwood lost the granny, Collingwood still had all of Pendlebury, Swan, Cloke, Reid, Shaw (a young Sidebottom and Beams) all in there prime of there careers, from the 2011 team off the top of my head the only players who were done and dusted were Didak, Tarrant, Johnson, Ball, Jolly and Leon Davis.

Such a good team gutted by a man who has shown to have no idea what he's doing.

two good kids in four years one being a F/S will hurt - thats why Collingwood is close to bottom four today.

Lots of deadwood (sic) on the list now.

Yep, reeks of pre-Malthouse Carlton. The coach isn't great but their list shot.

Watch them make the same mistake we did and throw the cheque at a saviour like Roos or Clarko.

Does it annoy Pies supporters when he makes stupid jokes like "I don't know maybe we need a 10Ft tall forward cause 7Ft isn't working"

What the **** is he talking about?? He's despondent now IMO.
It honestly makes me feel sad and pity towards him.

I want him gone as quick and painless as possible, i dont dislike him personally at all.

I like Eddie and I think Bucks is an elite professional .
But Buckleys history reads as this,
Choose Collingwood to play for premierships.
Missed 3 at the lions
Missed 2 at the kangaroos.

For all his eliteness he's a poor decision maker.

Leaving Brisbane in 1993 was not a poor decision. You can't predict what would happen in 8 years. He's marketing and status went through the roof by being in Melb.

Hmm. He returned a paper bag containing 10k back to Greg Miller after he had accepted it to join north. Played in a spoon instead of a premiership..
I guess there's another thread on his list management and recruiting ?
