Buddy - How many weeks?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Once again people are judging Buddy's actions on slow motion replays, at normal speed he has to make a split second decision to try and grab the ball or bump the player to clear a path for either him or a teammate to collect the ball. Either way he had momentum and a collision between him and Edwards was inevitable, unfortunately with the height difference he made high contact with Edwards but if Edwards is going to be stupid enough to stand there unprotected in Buddy's path he has to expect to get cleaned up by a bigger opponent travelling at speed.

There was no intent from Buddy to hurt Edwards he was just playing the game in a physical manner and was a little clumsy but the way the AFL has become so soft these days he will probably have to cop a week or two.

If it was me deciding on this incident he'd be allowed to play next week, rubbing a guy out for just being physical and making accidental head high contact like that is killing the game. I don't get why people, commentators included, are so keen to see players suspended, especially a superstar like Buddy who makes the game entertaining to watch. Having a player like him sitting on the sidelines for a couple of weeks doesn't do the game any good.

Couldn't stop his momentum or change direction at that speed and braced for contact late. Not a sniping act by any means (if there was intent behind it Edwards would literally be dead) but the height difference and subsequent head contact means he has to go. 2 weeks is my tip.
Edwards stepped right out in front of a freight train moving at full speed and the predictable happened. He got run over. Buddy needed to take notes on Pendlebury'stextbook perfect attack on the footy from Friday night and Edwards should think about protecting himself before stepping in front of any more trains!!

Started going for the ball, but then made the decision to take out the opposing player first. That presumably makes it deliberate, given there are only two gradings now. There's no doubt contact was high. Whether the MRP goes by the act or the result might determine whether it is medium or low force. I always go by the act, making it medium (high could be argued). That would be three as a base, down to two with an early plea.

It looks as though he has only been suspended for one game in the past two years, so the extra game will not be added. (Unless that was two down to one as the extra match is on the "base" penalties adding up to two games or more.)

What will happen in the over regulated PC world of the AFL....

Ran past ball, chose to bump, hit player to head....2 week suspension (maybe down to 1 with guilty plea).

In reality...

Franklin spills chest mark and runs at near full speed to gather loose ball, sees opponent in peripheral vision and takes his eyes off ball, realises that a collision is unavoidable and braces for impact, tucks his arm in to minimize force, but unfortunately for him, Richmond opponent Shane Edwards is 14cm shorter and Franklin's arm makes contact to the head of Edwards. Had it been Ivan Maric or Tyrone Vickery instead...nothing to see here, move along. Tough luck Bud, miss an entire game of AFL football or 2.

I can't help but think that if he had changed his direction to go for the ball Edwards may have been more seriously hurt and he may have hurt himself.

I would rather see players suspended for the rubbish going on between Rance and Franklin before the bounce than for Buddy's contact on Edwards. Footy without collisions is just not footy and at full pace you can not always control the impact.

Try hard Byron Pickett.

Give him a Calvin Klein and Bonds modelling contract, couldn't even knock out a bloke half his size.

It was Rance's knee to Buddy's ribs that was the real cheap shot.

The Hawthorn fans in this thread are my favourite. You're reigning premiers, why so salty?

Anyway, I can see 3 or 3 down to 2 here. A bump like that has been suspendable for years.

Yeah I don't get how accidental collisions are more heavily scrutinised and penalised these days than some of other crap you see going on where players niggle each other with pushing and shoving, jumper punches and striking. A lot of that gets ignored while guys that are just trying to play physical hard footy like Buddy get penalised.

Around 15 to 20 years ago there would have been nothing made of the Buddy incident, it was just seen as part of the game. Now you see endless replays with commentators speculating on how many weeks the player will get, it's like they want to see players suspended.

I'm all for suspensions for blatant acts of thuggery but I don't like seeing players rubbed out for collisions where accidental head high contact is made. It's a physical sport FFS and accidental head high contact in collisions is inevitable, it's part of the game and if you don't like it don't play it or watch it, stick to lawn bowls.

Ah the memories. Hawthorn supporters wrote similar things when he bumped Cousins back in 2010 (I think). Good times.

From the moment he changed direction, he was lining Edwards up and turning his shoulder into him, so it's intentional.

Edwards must have been groggy to have been subbed of under the concussion rule (he's one of our better players, so they wouldn't take him off without good cause), so at least medium impact.

My first thought on seeing it was 3 down to 2 and I think I'll stick with that.

minimum 4 weeks. Intentional, high impact, potential to cause harm, head involved.

You forgot reckless....Fell into Edwards head with his hip for some afters also.

If it follows the letter of the law, then it's 4 down to 3 with a guilty plea....No grounds for equivocation here whatsoever.

Yeah 3 down to 2 IMO. Should be right without him over the next 2 games, have him raring to go against the hawks at the neutral venue.

The Sydney Rule will be invoked: Insufficient force :$:$:$:$:$

I think it should be 2 down to 1, but given the precedent of Yeo's suspension being classed medium impact and the fact he took his eyes off the ball it would be ridiculous for it to not be at least 2 weeks off after the guilty plea. He overran the ball, this is what has stuffed him, if he'd stayed down to pick it up and turned his hips sideways he'd have gotten off no matter the collision.

Going for the ball is the only defense for a high bump now.

I reckon he should get off. Two players at full tilt you should be allowed to brace yourself.you bend over and end up the one getting smashed. Split second decision. He will go for a couple but I don't see what he should have done different.
