It seems to me we have an unusually high number of young players with thin frames.

Going through the list, I'd argue that the following young players are all cursed with a relatively thin frame:

Dick
Egan
Goldsack
Maxwell
Reid
Thomas
Wellingham

Now, a guy like Maxwell was able to put on enough weight to make it a non-issue, and I think Goldsack is getting there, but the others are questionable.

The question is - should Hine have placed a higher emphasis on getting more...let's call them "widebodied" players? Particularly as we already had some senior guys who struggle with strength like Fraser, Johnson etc..?

I think the theory was that we already had quite a few fat arsed wombats and that we were light on for skillful/athletic types. We've stacked up with the latter of recent times but I guess we cant do everything at once.

I've also noticed that Buttifant (is that his name?) doesn't seem to like them beefing them up suddenly. He seems to train for core strength and not bulk. I guess at the end of the day strength is more important than size.

Core Strength is paramount. Look at Gary Ablett or Chris Judd, not the biggest blokes on the field but their core is strong enough that even if they do get taken to the ground, they still have enough time to get the ball out to a team mate.

it doesnt matter about the size of their body,,

its the size of their heart.. i took a photo with nick maxwell and i couldnt believe how skinny he was,

now he is the toughest player in our team yet is skinny in build, he has a big heart and this is what we lack at our club!

You forgot to mention woody, hes a fairly skinny build also.

most footballers are quite skinny... they just look big on tv.. i laugh when i hear footballers being called "big"... the only player i remember that had a good build was jackovic from west coast.. he didnt have the typical beach body muscles... he was solid from bottom to top...

in terms of coire strength, i.e midsection/abdominal strength, i think its overrated.. i think the cfc need to employ a weights coach who has a background in explosive strnght weights training or power movement wieghts training..

i was very disappointed to see fev brush harry away on the lead like he did...

guys who can bench big dont get pushed put on the lead..

imo the pies boys need to do the following exercises on top of their core training...

all exercises should be done as explosive style movements..

super heavy on everything (weights being relative to ones natural strength)
bench press.
shoulder press
squats
deadlifts
what i dont understand is why thae dont focus greatly on doing these exercises... looking at the physiques of our boys it looks like most of them only train their beach muscles...

id love to train some of the boys at magpie land.. t

I can think of a few others...

It really is annoying expecting the younger players to be bigger over the pre season only to see them as skinny as they were the year before and then you look at young players from other clubs far bigger then they were the year before really pissess me off:mad:

i doubt that he was anywhere near 94 kilos.. although he might look big there.. he actually isnt.. however, buckley had a strong physique whixh could handles the rigours of the game.. i believe almost every player in our team is at least 8 kilos to light...

You're describing power exercises - which are fine if you're competing in a power-based sport, but AFL doesn't really fall into that category. They need muscle endurance as much if not more than explosiveness.

The problem is that if you don't have the body-type that easily develops muscle, and you only have 3 months a year in which to really add size, it makes it difficult.

Footywire lists him as 92 kg so close enough

power exercise can be done all year round but i said explosive power movements(these are more beneficial to a footballer than traditional power lifting techniques).. they are professional athletes who should be lifting on at least 3- 5 days per week. i have a cousin who is a proffessional fighter who requires a super high aerobic capacity... he also does power training to complement this...

amd as for body shape and size and pre-disposition to muscle gain... u dont neccessarily have to big to be strong... it just seems to me that the boys at our club- not all of them- dont seem to have great one on one strength..

on buckley and 92kgs.. it sounds fair enoung he is almost 190 cms.. when i was training i hovered b/w 79-82kgs hard.. and im 171cms.. and im no body builder or athlete that trained with every supplement and training aid at my feet...

in summary i think collingwood should poach a rugby fitness specialist coach and get the players to do that kind of training.. there are many 100kg rugby players that move around almost as well as some afl midfielders..

Just on that, given what the Giesh said during the week, should not every push off that Fev did have been a free kick to Harry (i'm talking especially about when Fev was on the leave and just before the ball arrived he stuck his hand out and pushed Harry in the chest)? I'm not complaining about the umpires more questioning whether Geish has ever seen a game of football.

Every player in the AFL would be doing these exercises, guaranteed. It'd have to be the basis of their workouts. They probably don't go very heavy during the season, but no doubt they'd be smashing them over summer. And these exercises do work your 'core' very well. Compound movements are winner!

What's he supposed to do? Grab his arm and give away a free? Yep, according to Geishan by his own words O'Brien should have recieved a free for every single push-off lead (basically every lead Fev makes).

The OP assumes (wrongly) that all players must be a certain body size, which of course is absolute crap.
Why not take this ridiculous theory further and say all players should 195cm and must cover 20 meters in 2.8 sec.
Additionally some players will never put on bulk regardless of what they do.

Introverted nonsense

Come on Ace, that is not what mdc was suggesting and you know it!

We don't need to bulk up all our players, what we need is 1 or 2 genuine gorillas of the Leppitch or Charman type. Every flag winner that I can remember has 1 or 2 enforcers that can genuinely intimidate the opposition but we don't have anyone. Maybe once he grows and bulks up Nathan Brown could be our enforcer in the future.

Rocca? Cloke should be.

well its good to see that Nathan Brown has a fairly big build

195cm, 97kg's

and Dawes is a monster!

193cm, 100kg's

compare this with Jonathan Brown
195cm, 102kg's

Im sure these boys can put on a few more kilos before they hit 27 :)

Nathan Brown is huge, stood next to him a few weeks back and he is an absolute unit, it's ridiculous.
compare him to Goldsack, saw him at the Carlton game, absolutely nothing, he is actually scrawny, but i believe that muscular strength is all you need and by what is said about Colligngwood concentrating on core strength it suggests that these boys are still strong,
also such an emphasis is placed on core strength these days as it helps in the prevention of ostieitis pubis which obviously more players are suffering from then what is said in the media.

p.s Nathan Brown will definitely be our enforcer and Cloke needs to do it too, Brown before the bounce went straight up to Fevola and started giving him the lip action and shoving him around,
it was great to watch :D something tells me he loves to fight a bit =D

I dont think Dawes is actually 100kg. More like 95kg. Being shorter and heavier than Brown he should look bigger but doesnt.

yeh i always see him roughing his opponents up and harrasing them etc.

i cant remember exactly which game it was could of been the brisbane game.. one of our players got hit hard and no1 in the team went to back him up except Nathan Brown..

its sad that no1 goes about it the same way he does but at least we know we have him..

lets just hope Dawes has the same grunt in him!

btw.. special mentions to Heritier Obrien lol.. every single week the opposition players give it to him.. before the match mainly but even during it.. he is always fighting its really great to watch.. he must be a smart ass lmao :D:p
