Perhaps he had his tonsils out.

Heart transplant.

inb4 rage.

Seriously though, my guess is another hip operation, given that Vardy said something suggesting he can relate.

Kenny talked about Butch in his presser today, which the club for some reason has split into 4 you tube videos. See video below from 1:10.

Ken – “just injuries. John just hasn’t had the chance to perform to the level he knows he can and that we think he can perform at…… we got to get him thru a preseason. If John gets thru a preseason he will be an outstanding tall forward for us. But there is some doubt because his body hasn’t at this stage been able to do that – now what happens quite a bit with young players they can have an really interrupted start to their career, then they get to a bit of ground that becomes pretty solid for them, hopefully that happens for John.

Was asked - What do your medicos say about John Butcher?

Ken "..he's in reasonable shape now, he’s had to work thru the big hip operations last year, which really did restrict his preseason ..... he's basically now just got some recovery stuff, some rehab stuff, some maintenance work that's being done, but he’s going to go into the start of this preseason in much better shape than last season. He wasn't able to run until January last year, or of this year, so he is going to be significantly more advanced than that, which will hopefully give him that chance to provide us with that player we are talking about." [ie talked about key forward player to help Schulzy earlier]

Asked about trading him.

"nah..... not something in our plans to go out there and get rid of. We would love him to stay fit and give us what his best is."

So the operation is a maintenance type one, he is reasonably healthy, looks set to do his first full preseason since he got here in late 2009 and Ken doesn't want to trade him but develop him to be the KPF to help out Sarge!!

As Leonard Cohen once said....

he is a ******* spud and wont ever amount to anything. Lets trade him now for a handful of non-magic beans cause next year he wont be worth even that.

I have always thought Butcher would never quite make it - (hoping like hell I am wrong)
But hey, the Port coaches should know what they are doing.
Everyone loves him at the club - lets hope we something next year

Butcher is a player who looks fine in motion (marking, chasing, tackling, disposing the ball on the run). But when it stops being instinctual for him like a set shot, it appears to be unnatural, and fearful for the guy.

I believe he has all the tools, he just needs the right box and belt to carry them in.

Frustrations are one thing which I can completely understand as Butch has barely shown much recently. Where it gets frustrating for me is when he gets called a spud ( or worse a *******). Most people could understand why a 22 yo KPP with zero fitness/confidence due to zero preseasons is struggling.

If he cant get his body right he will eventually be moved on. If he gets his body right and still doesnt show something he will eventually be moved on.

Why people continue to write off young tall players when history shows that so many of them take a long time to develop into anything decent is beyond me.

I've said it before I'll say it again, patience isnt a virtue around these here parts.
huh I haven't seen anyone say he was a spud or *******....but I have seen much worse about other players some of them coming out of the people who liked this post which is ironic...

What also is ironic is when the same people who say this shit about our whipping boys your crusade about player protection is no where to be seen

Lovely metaphor.

Ball drop can be fixed fairly easily. Not to make it sound overly simple, but I hadn't played since school and never learned to drop the ball properly. A few years ago I decided to play in the ammos for ships and giggles. Needless to say, my kicking was terrible. Myself and another newbie were sent off with one of the senior players to be taught to drop it properly. Within 15 mins, I was dropping the ball fine from a standing start. A little more practice and I was able to comfortably do it on the run.

Granted Butch will have years of bad habits to overcome, but I believe he can do it with the right teaching.

What the **** are you on about? Are you blind WINO? Open your eyes and you should be able to see numerous posts from people saying in black and white that butcher is a spud. The other day when I saw him referred to as a ******* was the last straw for me. Its disrespectful and something that shouldnt be accepted.

What also is ironic is when the same people who say this shit about our whipping boys your crusade about player protection is no where to be seen

What ****ing player protection crusade? Are you making things up again WINO? You need to stop imagining things, its not healthy for you.

Just FYI, I take exception to ANY of our youngsters being referred to as spuds (or *******s) when they havent been given a fair opportunity to show their worth. If you have a look at my history you will find previously I have defended guys like Broadbent, Moore, Lobbe, O'Shea etc. You should however note that on each of these occasions its because IMO they havent been given the opportunity to show their worth through circumstances often outside of their control (not enough experience, fitness, health, confidence)

As for protecting YOUR whipping boys, how bout you take up that cudgel. If its your passion and you worry for them, go for it. Dont make up some mythical crusade for me to champion. I am comfortable that most of your 'whipping boys' have had more than ample opportunity to prove themselves and have often failed.

Please put him in a bubble during the offseason.
keep him away from knives scissors and pointy edges of tables.
Butcher please don't blow it next year. this could be your last chance!

Butcher cops it pretty lightly. He has been given all the resources, all the opportunities, and all the support yet still hasn't shown any signs of improvement in two years. You seem to believe he is more worthy of defending than guys like Westhoff, Cornes, and Logan who have worked their asses off to get a shot in the AFL, and have fought against a tonne of unfair criticism their whole careers.

Personally, I don't accept that kind of bullshit. If a guy wasn't born good enough to play AFL, then he deserves my respect for trying his best. Those like Butcher, Koszchitske, Leigh Brown, and Franklin who are bigger, faster, and given more time + money than everyone else will only get my respect once they give their best.

*shrug* Weren't people wanting Westhoff and Lobbe gone when they were Butchers age? I'm happy to carry him for a bit longer in case he gets his body right and it all comes together, but we need to recruit another KPF or two in case he doesn't work out. Shaw is sounding promising but we can't rely on him turning into a star the same way we have with Butcher.

Errr... Westhoff is more athletically gifted (speed, height, tank) than most of our list.. 16 pages of criticism after a shanked set shot isn't copping it lightly. I'm not sure anyone else on our list has spent as much time in the operating room as J. Butcher.

No one is born to play AFL, almost everyone who's made it has had to work hard and sacrificed aspects of their lives to make it in the big time.

The hip plus lack of pre season will mean that a players is going to have problems running, jumping and getting to contests early enough to influence them. When the player is a KPF that means it will have an impact into 60-80% of what he does.
Hip problems can be fixed but take time.

Just like Lobbe did a couple of years back Butcher too has shown that he is more than capable and we know what happened to Lobbe once he got a decent run of games under his belt.
I wish a number on here would jstfu and give the lad and our medical staff a chance. It is bordering on embarrassing to being even remotely associated with some of the negative garbage.

Butcher cops it pretty lightly. .
That's wrong. Then again it 'seems' you believe someone being called a ******* is copping it lightly
He has been given all the resources, all the opportunities, and all the support yet still hasn't shown any signs of improvement in two years. .
If you cant understand that injuries and lack of preseasons has had a major impact on him then you must be blind. Are you part of that group think that wants Moore and Lobbe shunted off?
You seem to believe he is more worthy of defending than guys like Westhoff, Cornes, and Logan who have worked their asses off to get a shot in the AFL, and have fought against a tonne of unfair criticism their whole careers..

Butcher is no more worthy than any other young player that hasn’t had the opportunity to show his abilities due to factors like, um I don’t know, injuries and zero preseasons.
Either comprehension isn’t one of your strengths or you are simply lazy and couldn’t be bothered looking up my posting history to find out whether I have defended other players in a similar position to Butcher. Here’s a hint, I have in the past defended among others, Peter Burgoyne, Andrew Moore, Travis Boak, Justin Westhoff, Matthew Broadbent, Greg Bentley, Danyle Pearce, Matt Lobbe.
I also have no qualms in players being criticised for piss poor performances when they have had no injury issues, full preseasons and have shown previous form. They often deserve the criticism they cop.

If a guy wasn't born good enough to play AFL, then he deserves my respect for trying his best..
Woopity doo. Does it make you feel special that you respect battlers? What makes you think that I don’t respect guys for trying their hardest to make a go of being an AFL player? The fact that I defended someone being called spud/*******? Or is it that you think I should defend some of the bs performances guys like Cornes or Logan have put in simply because they 'had to work hard'?
Those like Butcher, Koszchitske, Leigh Brown, and Franklin who are bigger, faster, and given more time + money than everyone else will only get my respect once they give their best.
Lol…so please explain to me where Butcher has been given more time and money than say Justin Westhoff or Jay Schulz. Is Butcher taller than Westhoff, faster? Is he taller or faster than Daniel Stewart. Has he been given more time than Daniel Stewart? Has he been given more time than Schulzy? Is he being payed more than Kornes? Your assertion that Butcher has been given some sort of preferential treatment is BULLSHIT.
